Best experience ever
Ocean Blue is a beautifully designed and tastefully crafted cottage, overlooking the ocean on the south shore of the Dingle Peninsula. Mike and Meg are gracious hosts, giving a warm welcome and orientation, discovering commonalities, and yet allowing privacy. Perfect balance of warm Irish hospitality and professionalism. We hope this will be a place we get to return to in the future. Many thanks to you, Mike!

Much needed rest
Most glorious location for a restful few days, we were lucky to have such wonderful weather and spent most of our time on the patio. Mike and Meg were fantastic, made us feel like family. Awesome quiet location yet very close to Ventry beach, slea head drive and Dingle town. Planning my next trip!

Best stay of our travels!
We were floored by the cottage. The atmosphere inside and outside were extraordinary. We felt so at home the minute we walked-in. The views were amazing. The hosts, warm and welcoming. This was truly a highlight of our Ireland adventure. I’ll be back. In fact I looked at flights in the bus on our way out of town. It’s that perfect.

Mike and Meg Fitzgerald lovingly restored the Ocean Blue Retreat after they settled in Ballymore, near Dingle in 2013, from Australia. Mike's family emigrated to Australia from the Dingle penninsular in the late 1800s up until the 1920s. Both Mike and Meg have had extensive careers in education, social welfare, community development, music, design etc. Being seasoned travelers they understand the needs offolk who are holidaying abroad and they enjoy making a homely, cosy space for you to relax and soak in the beauty that nature offers in Ballymore and the Dingle penninsular.

Why they chose this property

Ocean Blue Retreat was originally a dairy which was attached to and old stone cottage and which was lovingly restored to incorporate all the modern conveniences including heated flooring, cosy living spaces, delightfully appointed bathrooms and comfortable bedding. It has a patio and out door furniture during summer months. Guests have access to gas bbq and their washer / dryer.

The property has its own little cove and is situated between a number of working cattle farms. It boasts beautiful views, spectacular sunsets and is situated on the mouth of Ventry harbour. It is located 3 miles from Dingle which boasts many pubs and excellent dining facilities, great music and craic!

Guests have their choice of drinking filtered and UV treated well water (free of chlorine and flouride) or town water.

The cottage is a few hundred yards off the Slae Head Drive; a spectacular drive which has been described by National Geographic as "...The most beautiful place in the world..." It takes little effort and not much time to complete the drive and is well worth it!

Sea safaris are available through Dingle Boat Tours to cruise Dingle harbour or to visit the Blasket Islands, to view the wild life including puffins, whales, dolphins, seals, deer, gannets, basking sharks and many more, depending on the season.

We are only too pleased to offer advice about attractions, pubs, music, restaurants OR to simply leave ye in peace to enjoy the trnquility of the setting.

What makes this property unique

The cottage is located in the Dingle Penninsular which is one of a few areas in Ireland which have retained and nurtured the traditional Irish language, music and culture. It offers opportunity for those of Irish descent (Irish diaspora) to experience first hand the community that their forebears left behind. It is also a deeply spiritual place; a "thin place," where about each mile west of Dingle is lcated there are remains of old monastaries dating from as early as the 5th century. Taking time, viewing and walking in these hills, one cant help but feel the deep tranquiliy this beautiful landscape has to offer.

Each night of the week there are traditional music offerings in several Dingle pubs. Some are performances while some are sessions which offer opportunity for visiting musicians to join in, no matter what their level of musical prowess. Just ask the person leading the session if you are invited to join in and away you go! These sessions are not necessarily performances but they provide a place where folk can gather and communicate at a deep level, sharing music and song. It is akin to the old loungeroom singalongs of the past, before we had screens to occupy our waking moments. Many of the tunes and Irish songs date back centuries and so provide yet another direct link with our past.

While in Dingle, visit the Harry Clarke stain glass windows in the chapel of the Diseart (old convent beside St Marys Church on Green St). There are many intersesting things to see as you walk the Main street, Green street and by the quay. The Dingle Aquarium is delightful for kids and some of us older kids! Milltown House offers eagle and other raptor handling sessions. There are many boat tours and tour operators. Sadly, Fungi, the famous dolphin, passed away. Many boat tour operstors have now diversified to offering sea life tours, harbour cruises, fishing trips etc. Dingle boat tours offers hiring of dingies if you want to drive your own boat cruise the harbour.
