About this property
Chatham Village: Lovely 1-Bedroom Apartment in Antique Home
** We've just completed a major renovation of Ship's Light! Having stood the test of time for almost 200 years, the house now has a new foundation, upgraded systems and a modified floor plan. We've worked had to maintain the character and charm of the antique home, while bringing it up to modern standards. We can't wait for renters to experience the results for the 2025 summer season and beyond!
The Lena Coleman apartment is the least-changed of the four apartments at Ship's Light. The layout remains the same, with a fully-equipped open kitchen/dining/living room area, cozy bedroom with comfortable queen-sized bed and a beautifully-tiled bathroom with new fixtures. It boasts a lovely porch deck, from which you can enjoy your morning coffee or a glass of wine while watching the sunset. It also has newly-installed, solar-powered air conditioning and heating throughout the apartment. The house has two Level 2 EV ChargePoint chargers for use by renters.
Ship’s Light has looked down Cross Street to Chatham Village Center for almost 200 years. Built and occupied by some of Chatham’s most eminent residents since 1828, it was converted to four housekeeping apartments for summer visitors circa 1945. Lovingly restored by long-time current owners, this gracious antique home offers modern comfort and convenience with the character and charm of a bygone era.
Named for my grandmother, the “Lena Coleman” apartment is a three-room, one bedroom gem. Airy and light, the eat-in kitchen boasts a bay window, with a round oak table and chairs and stained glass chandelier; the inviting living room has built in cabinets and a cozy window seat, two comfortable chairs and a smart-TV. Wi-Fi is available throughout the house. Perfect for a couple, the bedroom has a comfortable queen bed and a natural bead-board ceiling with exposed beams. The bath is beautifully tiled with a marble sink and sky light. Enjoy your morning coffee on the private roof deck with your loved one or watch the sunset while sipping a glass of wine. The charm of the apartment is further enhanced by the warm glow of beautifully refinished, hand-laid, wide pine, antique floors.
Centrally located within a short walking distance of excellent Chatham dining, shopping and band concerts, the house is three blocks from the town salt water beach on Oyster Pond, and one mile from Coast Guard Beach, a great stretch of Atlantic Ocean and dunes. Many individuals, couples and extended families consider Ship’s Light their vacation home. We invite you to join them in making your vacation something special.
The Lena Coleman apartment at Ship’s Light is available for stays of 3+ nights during the summer and shoulder seasons and stays of 2+ nights during the off-season. Other units with unique features are also available and the whole house can be rented as a 5-bedroom home for family gatherings.

I would give our unit 6 stars across the board if I could. This super clean old home has been meticulously and historically restored with the original character but has all the modern conveniences you want. 4 minute walk to Main St for everything Chatham has to offer from morning coffee to delicious dinners and shopping galore. There are 4 units in Ship’s Light and I hope to get to stay at them all! Allison’s hospitality won’t disappoint you.
As a first-time user of Vrbo, Alison was so helpful and wonderful. She answered my questions that I had and also did it in a timely manner. This place was so cute and felt so secluded but also right right off of Main Street and you can walk to get food coffee or just to go to the beach too. This was such a cute place to stay and I will definitely want to come back at some point! The walk to the beach was about 25 minutes give or take and I would bike there in about five minutes. It was so close. The place itself was very clean and had lots of little things that made it feel homie. I especially loved the little porch that we got. It is a step up through a window and it is so cute. I will say that the street that it’s on is a little bit noisy and there is a good amount of traffic coming through there, but it didn’t bother me. As for the kitchen me and my friend did not really cook anything, but we did use the toaster and some of the dishes and really everything you need is there to cook with. Overall, if you’re looking for a place to stay and you want it to be walkable to the local places, this is definitely the place to go and it’s perfect for two people, and I loved it!!!
Had a wonderful experience staying at Chatham Village. Apartment was well maintained and had everything we needed. Allison was very responsive and accommodating when we arrived a little earlier than expected. 10/10 experience!
We were very comfortable during our stay. The apartment was very clean and we loved its location. We would recommend it to anyone looking for a place close to downtown Chatham.
Loved everything about this place. It had everything I needed, was well-furnished with items that fit the setting, and was perfectly located within walking distance of Main St shops, restaurants, churches and library. It was also a nice walk to several beaches and a short drive to even more. (Since it is an upper unit, a tall person would have to watch the sloped ceilings. Not a problem for me.)
We tripped a circuit breaker and needed to call for location of breaker box. She drove to the apartment within 5 minutes and entered the basement to reset.
This is our 4th time staying in the Lena Coleman apt. It is clean and has everything two people need for an enjoyable stay. It is two blocks from Main St and many dining options and a pleasant walk to the lighthouse and beach. We keep coming back because it has everything needed for a relaxing vacation in Chatham.
Got exactly what we wanted. Quiet, clean and close to town. Thank you!

Small but functional and ideally located in town.
All that kept this from being five stars is that it was a little dusty when we checked in, as though it had been cleaned some weeks back after the last user.

We’re glad you enjoyed your stay, but wanted to note that the apartment had been cleaned the day before, after the last guest departed. Early June is high pollen season on the Cape, with pine pollen being especially bad this year. With the windows open, pollen blows in—an unavoidable challenge in an otherwise wonderful time of year to visit the Cape! The only solution is to keep the windows closed, but then you miss the warm spring breeze! On the Cape, we live with the pollen situation for about 2 weeks in early June, a small price to pay for paradise!
The property was cute and as described on the listing. The only complaint we would have is that it is extremely dark at night and since we checked in much later than expected it was a little rough to find the actual entrance. Overall very happy with our stay here.
This was my second year at this location. It is just perfect and I looked forward to returning all year. Very clean and very well appointed - everything you could need is there. Neighborhood is so quiet and peaceful with pleasant walks in every direction.
The 1 bedroom apartment was exactly what we were looking for. It was quiet and had everything we needed, including a good size bathroom with a shower. It is just 2 blocks from Main St where there are lots of restaurants and stores. Allison worked hard to accommodate us during a difficulty weather situation.
This is the second time we have stayed at this property, first time in the off season and we loved it just as much as the first time! It’s in the best neighborhood and we were able to walk downtown each day. Very clean, all the amenities matched our needs. It was really nice to have towels and sheets available that we didn’t have to bring. The bed was also very comfortable. Can’t wait to return!
We loved our stay in this 1 bedroom apartment in Chatham! We were impressed with the attention to detail...the high quality of the kitchen cabinets, windows and shades throughout, and the beautiful paint choices, as well as quality, for the rooms. One of our favorite features is the balcony...perfect for morning coffee or just relaxing any time of the day. This will be our number one place to stay any time we return to Chatham!
This is the third time we’ve rented the Lena Coleman suite with Allison. The unit has everything we need to feel at home within this beautiful town. The check-in process is simple, the apartment is very clean, well-stocked and in the best location in Chatham. We walk everywhere - the beach, downtown, the fish pier, and to Chatham Bars Inn for evening cocktails. We look forward to this relaxing vacation every year!

About the host
Hosted by Allison Coleman
The Coleman family has owned and loved Ship's Light since the mid-1970s. Like several owners before her, Lena Coleman lived at Ship’s Light year-round and rented its apartments to summer visitors. After she passed away, Bill, Roz and Allison Coleman undertook successive renovations and updates to the property, continuing to rent it during the summers to long-time friends and new guests. Allison completed the most recent extensive renovation in 2024 - 2025 and continues to welcome renters year round.
It has been a labor of love to work on this lovely house over the decades and it evokes in us strong memories of the generations that have come before us; in their honor, we have named each apartment. Lena, like others before her, looked forward to the summers when her long-time renters would return to visit, bringing with them stories of their winter months and great friendships built over many years; we are proud to continue this hospitable tradition in the heart of Chatham.
What makes this property unique
Located on a quiet street just off Main Street, Ship's Light is perfectly located and convenient to everything. You can walk downtown to shop in Chatham's great stores, enjoy a meal at a great restaurant, get ice cream and attend Friday night Band Concerts; it’s a short walk to the public library and Methodist, Episcopal and Congregational churches; other churches are also nearby. Chase Park and the grist mill are right around the corner; Oyster Pond (a nice swimming beach) is a short 1/4 mile stroll; the Atlantic Ocean is about 1 mile away. Visitors love to sit and read on the porches, patios and decks overlooking Cross Street and Shattuck Place; from these private perches you can put your feet up and watch the world go by.
