We had a wonderful and restful stay! This property was perfect for us and our 3 dogs. We would definitely stay here again should our travels bring us back to Acadia!
Our stay at Jan’s cottage was absolutely wonderful. The cottage is spotless, beautifully maintained, and full of thoughtful touches that made our stay extra comfortable. The location is ideal: tucked away in a quiet spot for peace and relaxation, yet just minutes from downtown Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. It was the best of both worlds—close to all the attractions but with the privacy and calm of a retreat. It’s the kind of place you look forward to returning to after each day’s adventure.
We loved it. It was right on Mt. Desert Island and 10 min from everything, including entrance to Acadia National Park and downtown Bar Harbor. We got the best of both worlds- the town and people amd then went to our secluded quiet space at night. The house had everything we needed. We could not have asked for more:)
Our family of 6 enjoyed our stay on Gemstone Way! The house met our needs very well and the location is perfect for short trips to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. The house did have a lot of pet hair around, but if you’re not bothered by that it’s a great place to stay! We are very thankful for our time here and we hope to stay here again!
This property had everything we needed and it was the perfect location for access to hiking and biking. We’re already looking forward to returning next year.
The home is in a great location, close to everything. Its small, but just enough for the 3 of us. The only bad thing i can say about the house is the musty smell. Noticed it every time we can back from our excursions.
Great Location, comfortable , everything you need for a short stay
This house is located within ten minutes of Bar Harbor /Acadia. It is well equipped with all you need for a week long stay. It was very clean when we arrived and provided all you need to maintain that. Checkin and check out was easy. Although we didn’t need it communication with the owner was available . We would definitely stay here again.
Perfect Bar Harbor Retreat: Peaceful, Pristine, and Well-Located
We had an absolutely wonderful stay! The property exceeded our expectations in every way. The home was immaculately clean, spacious, and well-equipped with everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The location was perfect—tucked away in a quiet, scenic area, yet just a short drive to downtown Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park.
The outdoor space was a true highlight, with a lovely deck and peaceful surroundings that made it easy to relax and enjoy the beauty of Maine. We appreciated the thoughtful touches throughout the home, from the cozy furnishings to the well-stocked kitchen. The host was responsive and made the check-in and check-out process seamless.
We highly recommend this property to anyone looking for a memorable and relaxing getaway in Bar Harbor. We can't wait to return!
Janice‘s house was exactly as described. It is a very good location to get to the hiking trails on the busy and the quiet side of Acadia. We had plenty of room for the two of us and our two dogs. The kitchen is well stocked and there are plenty of fans and the living room and two of the bedrooms have some kind of AC system on the wall. It was perfect to keep the place comfortable. We already booked our time for next year.
We really enjoyed our stay. The property was clean and comfortable. We didn't spend much time outside at the house because the mosquitos were bad. The only down side was there must have been someone that rented that had a dog or cat because I am allergic to both and there was a lot of hair on the sofa and I ended up getting stuffy and itchy eyes so I vacuumed the sofa so I was able to sit there. I would rent again. It was close to Acadia national park and about 11 miles from downtown Bar Harbor.

Carol, I am so sorry there was pet hair on the couch. The cleaner should have vacuumed the couch. This house is pet friendly and the renters that left the day you arrived did have a pet. If you want to come back again, I do have a house listed with HomeAway that is in the same location - it is pet free. That would probably be a better fit for you. (It is HomeAway Property #3557261). Please accept my apologies and we do give a $100. per week discount for your next visit.
Booked this property as a last minute stay and it suited our needs. It was right on Mt Desert Island, minutes from Acadia, and was affordable for our family of five. You do get what you pay for though. The property was dated and things were run down. Incredibly damp inside - towels and clothes didn’t dry overnight - a dehumidifier would be a benefit if installed. Overall, we were happy with the price and location, but feel the rental could use some TLC. You could find everything you need in the kitchen to boil some lobsters though, so that’s a big plus!

Should be condemned
Ruined our vacation. House should be condemned and the owner should not be in the rental business. House smelled of mold and urine, bathroom had mold, sheets on the bed and the mattress under them smelled horrible.
We reserved the house for 4 nights as my wife and son were joining my daughter and myself on MDI for a few days. I was already up there with my daughter staying with my extended family. Since we have dogs we needed to get our own place. I showed up with my daughter on Wednesday to get the keys and pay for the place (cash at the insistence of the owner). Upon opening the house, I was overwhelmed with the smell, although the house itself appeared to be clean. Were it not for the circumstances of our dogs I would have simply refused the house but we had no choice. While the owner was there we opened every window in the place. My wife and son ended up not coming up Wednesday night so my daughter and I stayed one more night at my folk's timeshare. The next day I went back and after 24 hours the house smelled marginally better. I then pulled back the bed sheets only to discover they smelled horribly. I then stripped the beds and washed the sheets. I informed the owner of that and that the wifi was not working (neither was the cable). Trying not to be too confrontational when she came over she offered to let us use another house that would be available the next day or offered us a full refund. Again not trying to be a problem I said if the other place doesn't smell and is cleaner...great. By this point my wife and son were there so we had to stay the night. We froze with all the windows open and slept on the air mattress we brought to the timeshare. My son fell off of the deck which is falling apart as is.
The next afternoon we were informed by email that the other place was now not available. Thats when it got ugly. The owner renegaded on her offer of a full refund. And charged us for two nights all the tax we paid, leaving us with no options other than to go home of find somewhere to keep the dogs and all sleep on an air mattress in an overcrowded timeshare. Suffice to say I am beyond infuriated at how we were mislead and that we paid a 250 dollars to drive 5 hours and wash someone else's sheets. Horrible place and horrible people. I informed the town chamber of commerce, building inspector and had the police present when trying to resolve this issue. Avoid at all costs.

Aaron Green made a late reservation for 4 days (9/27 – 9/30). He arrived on 9/27, walked through the house, filled out paperwork, made his payment (due to short time to his arrival, I had asked that he bring cash; he asked if an out-of-state check for the deposit could be written, to which I agreed), & he took the keys & left.
The next day (9/28) he made a complaint of not being able to connect to wifi & stated that the sheets had a bad odor. I told him by email how to reset the wifi modem & stopped over later to re-set the modem & did not notice any odors. The house had just been cleaned (& all linens washed) by our cleaners after another guest left on 9/24. The cleaners did not notice any bad odors/smells. The previous renters had commented on the cleanliness of the home (see their review). There was no basis for his complaints.
While at the house, I told Aaron I might have another house he could stay at (that should be available the next day) or offered a refund.
Aaron and his wife left the house at ~5 p.m. on 9/28 (to pick up their children, who I never saw), leaving their 2 dogs gated in the bathroom with all of the windows open & lights on (inside & out). I was visiting another renter, & heard the dogs barking & whining, creating a disturbance for the other guests & the neighbors. I did not leave until ~10:30 p.m. & Aaron had still not returned to the house where he had left the dogs.
The next day (9/29) I told Aaron the other house was not available; I could only offer a refund. He told me he was “packing up” & expected a Full Refund.
I arranged to meet him at the house at 4:30 p.m., Friday, 9/29 to discuss his refund.
When I arrived at the house, police arrived (called by Mr. Green). Other than to try to intimidate me, I have no idea why he called the police to be present but I am glad he did, because (in Aaron's words - where it became ugly) - Aaron’s behavior became very erratic & threatening. He did not have the keys to return, & we waited for someone else to arrive with the keys. He became more irritated, confrontational & threatening as we waited. He did not mention his son falling until the very end, when he threatened to call Code Enforcement. After the keys were returned, I refunded his deposit, 2 days’ rental and ½ of the Maine State lodging tax. Aaron was threatening to be "very verbal" about this as he got into his car.
He was looking for place where he could leave the dogs unattended (for free) & join his friends at the time share.
As good as advertised. clean, spacious and a great location. You actually can get there from here wherever you want to go. Nice to return to quiet privacy after a busy day.
Janice was very thoughtful and responsive. The location is great. We really enjoyed staying at her cottage.

Why they chose this property
My husband and I spent many summers here until we decided to move here in 1989. We love Acadia National Park and the towns on MDI. (And fresh lobster of course). Spend your vacation at our rental property and I'm sure you'll fall in love with Maine too!
