About the host
Hosted by Lizz Frost Yocum
After 20+ years of international living and work, Lizz and Tom Yocum, along with Daisy, their dog, moved back to where they first met: Canaan Valley.
They opened 77 in Canaan to share this beautiful part of the world with friends, family and kindred spirits.
Tom is a writer-editor and publisher of the Tucker County Observer, the independent community newspaper for the Potomac Highlands. He is also an X-C ski instructor at White Grass Ski Touring Center and landscaper par excellence. Skiing in the valley since the 80’s, Tom was a paramedic on the Canaan Valley and National Ski Patrol, and the first PSIA telemark/alpine instructor in the state. His knowledge of the area is extensive. Ask him about trails, local history, and his new favorite subject, moss.
Lizz is owner of the Canaan Valley Flower Company which is dedicated to bringing the beauty of flowers and the benefits of gardens to all ages and abilities. After a career in international public health and behavior change communications, she renewed her social work license, earned a certificate in horticultural therapy and started flower farming. At Cortland Acres nursing home, Lizz started the residents’ “green thumbs” plant therapy program.
Daisy is a Tibetan Terrier mix from Dakar, Senegal. After eight months of COVID lockdown, she traded the beach for the mountains, and joined Lizz and Tom on the journey to West Virginia. She has since learned to grow a winter coat, chase squirrels and be an awesome trail buddy.

What makes this property unique
All over the world, Lizz and Tom have enjoyed working with local artists and celebrating the nature and beauty around them. Inside, 77 in Canaan is no exception. The hand forged railing, photos, prints, and pottery in the house have all been commissioned or selected to celebrate local beauty and talent.
Tapping into their own extensive travel experiences, Lizz and Tom aim to make guests feel welcome, relaxed, comfortable and eager to explore the area.
Lizz and Tom know what it is like to be somewhere new or to come back to somewhere familiar, ready for a break, a recharge, maybe even an adventure, and still need some creature comforts. They have sought to set up and stock 77 in Canaan so that guests can settle in, kick back, rest well and get on with their fun.
In winter, skiers can drink their morning coffee looking at the slopes, ski all day, then come back to an apres-ski on the deck to admire at the slopes all over again, or relax fire-side by the stone hearth or outdoor fire pit.
In summer, the property is in bloom with nature friendly flowers. Hummingbirds live in trees by the house. Birds and butterflies can be seen feeding on wildflowers, in the flower beds and the moon garden.
Leaf-peepers are spoiled for choice in the autumn.
Year-round, the wifi is 150+ Mbps for digital nomads and those who just need to briefly check-in, while the BBQ area, picnic table, front deck and fire pit are places to relax and enjoy the outdoors.
And, finally, of course, there are the night skies - the moon, Milky Way, satellites and galaxies! - to inspire awe.
