The property
The home is on the 800 block in the city of Wilmington's downtown historic Castle Street district. It has thick bushes surrounding the front and sides of the home and a driveway on either side (the neighbor’s driveways) which provides distance between the neighbor’s homes. We have blinds and sheer curtains to let in light, yet provide privacy. It has a sunny fenced in backyard with a tall privacy fence, high trees along the back to give more privacy from the house behind us, string lights, fire pit & Adirondack chairs, and a picnic table. Enjoy hanging out by the fire or dining outside after a long day exploring the area. See photos for a better picture of what city living looks like.
The neighborhood
Our home is located in the up and coming Castle Street Antique & Arts district. This is a popular place for VRBOs (because of the walkability to small businesses) and know of 3 VRBOs on our block alone & about 10 within a few blocks of us!
We’re a part of the Castle Street Collective which is a group of small business owners on Castle Street, VRBOs in our neighborhood, and the neighbors who work together with the city of Wilmington to develop & beautify our historic arts and antiques neighborhood.
Downtown Wilmington is considered an urban area & offers a lively experience compared to nearby quiet beach towns. It is the 8th biggest city in North Carolina. Our street is not a main street like Market or Dawson & does not have a lot of car traffic. Like in many cities, there are people walking, biking, or hanging out outside. We provide sound machines in each bedroom if you’d like to use them at night. We love & are proud of our inclusive vibrant neighborhood, and bring our infant and toddler often to enjoy what the city has to offer while still being within a quick drive to the beach. However, we understand everyone has different comfort levels when they are traveling to new places. If you’re not looking for a lively city experience, I recommend staying in smaller towns. Wrightsville or Carolina beach are quieter because they’re not within walking distance of the downtown or small businesses. This cuts down on foot traffic and noise because everyone has to use their car to get around.
A huge perk of staying in downtown Wilmington is you’re getting a great value by being a 20 minute drive to the beach, rather than paying a premium for beach front property. The other huge perk is you can enjoy the beach by day and city life by night. If downtown Wilmington is what you’re looking for, we’d love to host you! We do have blink cameras on the exterior of the property. A doorbell camera, a camera facing the street, and 2 in the backyard. We inherited these from the contractor who flipped the home. The rare occasions when we’ve used them was to see how the property faired in the snow to see if we needed to get it shoveled, to confirm our garbage can was missing when our cleaner notified us it was gone, or when our keypad notified us a guest typed in an incorrect code on the front door & I was able to talk to them through the blink to help them in. Other than that, they go unused because it’s a pain to get out a ladder to change their batteries and we never planned to install them, they were just there from previous owners. Please let me know if you have any questions about them!

About the host
Hosted by Kristina Westerman

I'm a former teacher and absolutely love event planning/hosting! We grew up outside of Philly, lived outside of New York City, then in the heart of Seattle, and now in Raleigh. We love being around the hustle and bustle of cities with lots to do!
Why they chose this property
We loved the idea of being close to the beach, but didn't want to be somewhere so remote. We wanted to be in the city of Wilmington, so we could enjoy the lively restaurant and bar scene. We have two young children, so we also enjoy that we're less than a mile away from two children's museums. We also absolutely loved that we're only two blocks away from Castle Street's coffee shops, cafe, restaurants, yoga studio, and wine shop! It's an up and coming neighborhood with a lot of development and we wanted to be apart of that! We even joined the Castle Street collective, which is a group of small businesses, airbnbs, and neighbors who are interested in beautifying and seeing our neighborhood thrive!
What makes this property unique
Our airbnb is unique because its decorated with bright and airy coastal vibes! I didn't want to do the traditional nautical beach look, but rather was inspired by the movie Where the Crawdads Sing. The queen room is "Kya's Room" and the king room is "The Marsh." There are a lot of updates including the kitchen, flooring, tile, etc. We have made the home very child friendly, because we have two young kids. We've added a lot of children's amenities, for traveling families. We also have a high fenced in tree lined back yard, which makes it feel private. We added outdoor furniture and a fire pit for winding down after the beach! The most unique thing of all, is being able to walk to blocks to the small businesses on Castle Street or 3 to the large community park with pickleball and community center!
