About this property
Charming Sherwood Forest Cottage overlooking Trout Lake
Welcome to Flying Squirrel Lodge, a cozy cottage nestled in the woods of Sherwood Forest Audubon Sanctuary. This single level (no steps!) 2 bedroom, 1 bath, home is located in the heart of all the area has to offer. The home does occasionally accept approved pets so if you have allergies, you may need to take this into consideration.
Rock your cares away on the front porch as you watch the light glistening on the surface of Trout Lake below and listen to the sound of the many birds that inhabit the trees around you. Walk down the hill to enjoy a dip in the clear, clean water or drop a line off the dock or the dam to try your hand at fishing. Within minutes, walk or drive to the quaint Robin Hood barn to attend picnics or to the Robin Hood Center to participate in floor exercises, listen to lectures by some of the many knowledgeable people who live in the Forest, or check out a book or video from the library. Make the short drive across the forest to the heated junior Olympic swimming pool where you can swim laps, participate in water aerobics, or just enjoy a leisurely dip in the sparkling water in season or play tennis or shuffleboard on the courts year round. An 18 hole, par 3 golf course fronts the Forest and is available to all for a modest fee. Hike the many miles of trails alone or with one of the docents who offer their knowledge and time to the people who live in or visit the Forest. An 8 mile drive brings you to the charming town of Brevard where you can wander the streets and visit the unique shops and galleries found there. Within minutes of downtown is the Pisgah National Forest with all the wonders it has to offer including waterfalls, nature centers, hiking trails, trout streams, and Sliding Rock where you can brave the icy waters for the slide of your life. Within a 30 mile range are 250 named waterfalls, 6 state and national forests, the famous Brevard Music Camp, the Biltmore Estate, and the charming towns of Hendersonville and Flat Rock, with the Flat Rock Playhouse and Carl Sandburg’s home.
While at home, enjoy the chestnut paneled great room by curling up on the double recliner sofa in front of a crackling fire in the corner stone fireplace. A galley kitchen opens over a counter so if you choose to cook, you can enjoy your family and friends at the same time. The bathroom contains a full size washer and dryer for your convenience. The first bedroom has a king bed and the second has twin beds for an alternative sleeping option. Find peace and tranquility in this little slice of heaven with a visit to Flying Squirrel Lodge.

About the host
Hosted by Sally Mateja

My husband and I live and work in Cadiz, KY. We love to relax in the country at our haven in the Blue Ridge mountains of western North Carolina.
Why they chose this property
I have been coming to the Sherwood Forest since 1965. It started with family vacations every year in rental homes until finally in 1985, my parents purchased Flying Squirrel Lodge. It was designed to be easily accessible which allowed Mom and Dad to enjoy it for many years before turning it over to me in 2011.
Sherwood Forest is home to so many knowledgeable people who work together to create and maintain a community where people live and protect the natural environment. There is so much to see and do yet it is a place of peace and tranquility. It is truly a slice of heaven on earth.

What makes this property unique
Flying Squirrel sits overlooking Trout Lake, one of 5 lakes in the Sherwood Forest. A trail begins just behind the house and can be followed up or down the mountain, across streams, around lakes and through the forest to connect with 21 miles of marked paths.
