About this property
Beautifully Restored Stone Farmhouse in Normandy Countryside
Les Madieres is a century-old restored stone farmhouse set in an acre and a half of lush land and gardens. A peaceful retreat in the French countryside, minutes from the bustling market town of Vire, with easy access to many attractions of Normandy.
There are 3 comfortable bedrooms and 2 bathrooms (1 full bath/shower & second WC), including a spa-like bathroom downstairs. Downstairs: kitchen, dining room, & lounge with wood-beamed ceiling & granite fireplace. The lounge features a TV, dvd player, & books. An excellent supply of pots & pans, to practice your French cuisine awaits! We recently updated the kitchen cabinets and appliance and removed a wall to open up the dinning area (2023)
Situated on nearly 2 acres, Les Madieres invites you to enjoy some wine on the terrace, stroll the apple orchard, or relax on a tree-shaded lounge chair & lose yourself in a book. Children will love playing on the vast fenced garden, finding the secret path way, and saying bonjour to the neighboring cows while you enjoy alfresco dining on the outdoor terrace. The setting is tranquil and surrounded by farmland and filled with the sounds of birds and little else.
Ideal for families/groups of 4 (while it sleeps 6, the lounge seats 5 and the terrace has seating for 4, along with 2 loungers in the garden).

Totally relaxing country property. Felt isolated but just off the main road. Surrounded by trees, so no country views or wild animals in the garden!! No noise except birds and the odd cow. Everything provided for day to day living. Supermarket and small town a 10 minute drive. Lots of local attractions if you want and an hour to DDay beaches, Caen etc.

It is a lovely comfortable property with a great large garden in a quiet and rural area of the Calvados region in France. The property has a well equipped kitchen, TV/WiFi /CD. Also some games for children And a welcome selection of good reads.Bed was good, slept very well !Will definitely go back.
The house was lovely with a newly fitted kitchen. The location was amazing we loved sitting out in garden in the evenings listening to the wildlife and enjoying the tranquility. The kids loved exploring the huge gardens. We had a wonderful time and really did not want to leave. We will definitely revisit again.
Our stay was very pleasing. The house is charming and lovely. It was well prepared and perfect for the three of us. The furnishings of the house are simple but perfectly adequate. The spaceous garden is phantastic, a peaceful retreat. The location of the house is perfectly suiting a combination of interest in relaxation and visiting the great historical landmarks of Normandy - e. g. Mt. St. Michel, The Landing Beaches and Bayeux, as it is located in nearly equal distance to each of them. The cost-benefit-ratio considering these criteria is nearly unbeatable. We therefore are considering to coming back.

Les Madieres - website dosn't do it justice.
We'd read other people's reviews about the photos - but believe us its true. Wether you're a seasoned Gitte-er or have never had a French Cottage holiday before you will not regret staying at this beautiful property in fantastic surroundings, everything in the advert is accurate and the house was spotless and well decorated and furnished. The owner Ken may be in Vancouver but answers emails almost imediatly and when we were there, the local property manager was a very helpful english girl who lived nearby. We live on the outskirts of London and really appreciated the fact that it got dark at night (enough to see meteor showers) and during the day all you can hear is birds and the odd donkey or cow. The nearest Town is Vire -15 mins away by car with a great market on fridays, also with the Carrefour etc. If History's your thing amazingly this area was a major turning point in WW2 after D Day there are several museums, memorials & cemetaries in the area, and not far is Bayeux (tapestry) and Caen (Home of William the Conqueror -although he wasn't called that pre -1066). We are in our 50's and had a wonderful holiday here with our 15 year old son, even he looked up from his phone and nintendo occasionally!. Theres also plenty in the area to paint if you're in to art or youcan just enjoy the grounds, with your bread, wine and cheese for lunch by the pond or BBQ for dinner. We will definitely be returning, as soon as we can.

We had a very pleasant stay with our kids at the house. The backyard is huge, so perfect for kids to run around. There's also plenty of room to play football or badminton.
The house itself is comfortable and spacious. It's got all the amenities you will need.
The locations is right in the middle of... nothing much. Perfect if you're looking to explore in all directions. Any direction you wish to explore will require a bit of driving though.
Recommended.

Convenable
Weather was wonderful and we enjoyed wine on the terrace under the tonnelle, drinking wine and listening to the birds.
Central to the beaches at Granville, the Zoo, D day beaches, and mt ste. Michel.
Wifi was fast and reliable which allowed us to watch net flix on the TV as the satellite was down.
Looking forward to our return!!

D-DAY in Normandy, and so much more
We fell in love with your wonderful little farmhouse, and what an unforgettable week we spent there! We had some problems finding it in the dark and the rain, but nothing compared to the rental car problems. LOL. But when we did find it, near midnight, it was magical. Awaiting us in the warm friendly kitchen was a bottle of wine, french bread and a feeling that we could live there forever. Our visit to Normandy was so much more than we could have imagined. The friendly people welcomed us everywhere. We took part in all the D-Day festivities and my two grandchildren, both 18 years old will never forget that they and their country are loved by the citizens of Normandy. I would not hesitate to recommend your lovely spot to anyone. The old world feeling permeates the property, but with all the modern conveniences weary travelers look for. The people of Vire were so kind to us wherever we went. We ate in several of the nearby restaurants. Thanks for all your tips, the supermarket was the best. We were able to use our credit card [VISA] almost everywhere which made things very easy. Of the six of us, only Bill and I have been regular travelers to Europe. My sister and brother-in-law and our grand children had never been. Because we stayed in the cottage they received a wonderful impression of the joys of traveling to far away places and living with the people of another culture. All 4 of them gained a confidence they will need and use on future visits. I can't thank you enough, the house is so precious, the "neighborhood" so friendly and quaint, the price was very reasonable and we can't wait to make another trip. Bill and I are already discussing plans to make a month long trip to France and use your cottage and Vire as our base camp. There was so much we did not get to do in one week. Our purpose was to expose our family to the awesome celebration that occurs around D-Day, and we more than accomplished that. We also had an easy trip to Mt Saint-Michel. A trip I advise everyone to make! .While it sleeps six comfortably the price is more than reasonable for two. The laundry room was another plus. So useful for long stays. I wish I could post the photos of my brother-in-law hanging the laundry on the line in back! It was over 40 years since any of us had seen an outside clothesline. Spoiled Americans, I know. Our stay included another week in Paris [Sans auto!]. Life is good. Bon jour, Kathleen and Bill Mero

Perfect Quiet Getaway
We had a wonderful time at Les Desert as well. The house itself was perfect size for 4 adults and 2 children (as long as the adults are willing to sleep two to a bed). The gardens were fantastic and we had some epic games of badminton over the laundry hanging line. FYI, there is no wireless internet in the house, but you will not need it. We easily made day trips to Festyland for the kids, Omaha Beach and Mont St. Michel. The town of Vire (15 minutes drive) was also a great place to sightsee in the area. Ken was very quick to respond to us as well.
Thanks for a great vacation spot for our family!

Fantastic Family house
We enjoyed a fantastic week at this lovely house at the end of April. The house and gardens were delightful - plenty of space and our boys really enjoyed the garden. One of them managed to fall into the pond fully dressed! Unfortunately the terrace was overgrown with weeds and no garden furniture, so we were unable to enjoy the terrace on the warmer days. The house is very comfortable and cosy.
The house is in a great location - so much to see and do in every direction - we would love to go for another visit.

Thanks for the review, much appreciated. Sorry to hear about overgrowth on terrace. Spring in Normandy can produce rapid growth - we've got our gardener on it! We would love to have you back - all returning guests enjoy a 10% discount. Cheers, Ken & Kimberley.
About the host
Hosted by Ken & Kimberley
Hi, we're Ken and Kimberley Foster. We are Canadians who love Europe and old world charm: the food, architecture, history, and of course, wine! We have two boys who enjoy exploring the farm in France and tasting new foods and ancient ruins. We bought the house to create a life a bit less ordinary from our lives in Vancouver - best decision we ever made.
Why they chose this property
Location, location, location. A stone farmhouse on nearly 2 acres of tranquil farmland. The boys can safely roam the property. It has an orchard that locals harvest the apples and pears from to make wine. It is a quick trip into a great market town, which has a direct train to Paris!
What makes this property unique
Unlike may farmhouses, ours is set up to live in full time with modern features like radiator heating in every room, fiberoptic wifi, and recently updated appliances (fridge, washer, cooker)
