About this property

The Quack Shack is a treehouse located along the banks of The French Broad River

Located on the grounds of the Duckpond Pottery, The Quack Shack is a secluded treehouse perched along the banks of the French broad River. The structure is an enclosed 8x10 A-frame that transforms via a hinged wall to become an open air cabana with an expansive deck affording spectacular views of The French Broad River and surrounding countryside. The interior of the Quack Shack, with its vaulted 11 foot ceiling and earthen plaster walls feels more Italian villa than shack. It is furnished with a comfortable seating area surrounding a coffee table that at night can be easily converted to a full size queen bed. On the outside deck are beach chairs, hammocks, and a chimnea available for use. The quack shack has electric power.

Amenities include a bathroom located a short walk away at the main building as well as an open air on demand shower located off the bathroom on a deck overlooking the French Broad River. Morning coffee and
Tea are complimentary at The Tea Hut located just a hop, skip, and jump from the treehouse.
The Quack Shack is centrally located in Transylvania County, North Carolina. Both Pisgah National Forest and DuPont State Forest are within a ten minute drive from our location and downtown Brevard can be reached in a short 7 minute drive.

The treehouse is super cute and the view is incredible! Definitely a great spot if you're comfortable with a rustic getaway. Nick is super kind and responsive. The bathroom is not attached to the sleeping area and while I was there, the only potable water was provided by the host and there was a hand washing station (big container with a spigot and soap) outside the room with the toilet. The shower is open to the river (there is a shower curtain for those who are a little more modest) and you need to turn on the propane and immersion heater ahead of time. There is a small refrigerator (one of the cubes like what you'd have in an office - no freezer/ice) and a pizza oven (no microwave/oven.) The highway noise was disappointing because I was hoping to hear the river and it only quieted down well after dark. Definitely bring closed toed shoes to walk up and down the path from the Quack Shack to your car/bathroom, a flashlight of some kind for those after dark potty breaks, there is one outlet in the sleeping area and a heater (no AC) an extension cord or multi port charging option is a good idea, the sleeping platforms had foam cushions that I doubled up (each about the size of a twin bed), shower shoes if you're not comfortable showering on a wooden deck barefoot, I recommend your own sheets and pillows.

For the most part this is a beautiful little space, cozy and sweet. The river and nature sounds, including seeing a giant Heron and bats was cool. It is however right next to a fairly busy and noisy road. That disrupted the peace and sleep a bit. The hot tub he heated up to at least 110 and it stayed hot for hours after the fire went out. The 2 single "beds" are just some cushions on wood but we had our own memory foam with us to put over the top. It's very tiny and there isn't any sink or toilet nearby and you gotta walk could hundred feet? uphill to that.

The Quack Shack is adorable, just like the photos. We actually had a car problem on the way which put us behind 4hrs . Nick still met us when we got there. Amazing views all around, very few bitey bugs. My only complaint is that it's closer to the road that we originally thought, so cars can be a bit loud. Otherwise, amazing stay and I definitely recommend.

Quack Shack Review

For folks who relish funky, unique experiences that are off the beaten path, this is for you! The entire experience had the feel of being hosted by a fairy village! We loved it. The river was serene, the beds were comfy. Nick is just minutes away if you need anything. The atmosphere nourished our spirits. My son woke up saying, "This is so nice." We wanted to stay longer.

Great little place if you’re just wanting simple

My 10 year old son and I stayed here on a weekend boys trip. Nick is a great guy and the place is a solid choice. Be mindful it is small and you will not have a lot of room, but if you’re like us and on the move we just needed a place to come to and sleep and chill a little. There is no real place to fish on property, but it’s just a short trip to get to one. All in all I would recommend.

Perfect Couples Weekend

We had an amazing time! The treehouse is beautiful & the craftsmanship & time Nick took into creating this dream is outstanding. He was such a great host, teaching us how to use the pizza oven, enjoying the tea hut, pottery & grounds. Close to all the falls & amazing views. Will definitely visit again.

I’ll be back

The treehouse was obviously crafted with a lot of thought and care. I had a lovely, relaxing stay with beautiful scenery and a hot tub to relax in every night. Nick made sure I had everything I needed, and was very communicative when I had questions. Downtown was a five minute drive, and twenty minutes to all the hiking spots I wanted to hit. Perfect getaway.

I’ve been a resident of Transylvania County since 1998 when my wife (girlfriend at the time) moved up from Gainesville, Florida to open up our current studio, The Duckpond Pottery. In the last 25 years we’ve raised a family and continued to put our energy into pottery making, natural building projects, and hosting our summer music series, “Duckpond at Dusk.”

Why they chose this property

We came to Brevard initially to visit my parents who retired here in the early 1990’s but then fell in love with the natural beauty of the area and decided it was the ideal place for us to raise a family and build a pottery business.
