About Meka & David
Meka has been in Asheville since 2004. He is a full-time massage therapist, working from home and at the Asheville Salt Cave downtown. Since 1995, he has also made his livelihood consulting and teaching Natural Building systems such as Adobe, Cob, and Straw-bale, locally and around the world...with a specialty in wood fired ovens and Rumford fireplaces. David is a Sales Manager for a privately owned Sales Group in the Pet Industry. We both enjoy puttering around the property (Meka was a Permaculture landscape gardener for 7 years; David loves to tend the gardens and maintain the home and grounds. GrayScott is our home and we hope you will love it too.
Meka & David purchased this Apartment in 2014
Why Meka & David chose Kenilworth
On our first walk through of this 1942 house, we entered through the basement (what is now the Garden Suite), and were immediately enchanted by the 15" thick stone foundation walls and fireplace. We were looking for a fixer upper with good bones and discovered good bones AND teeth! We did all the demolition and were hands on in the renovation process from start to finish. The house has all new electrical, plumbing, and central air system.
What makes this Apartment unique
The apartment is a one of a kind labor of love. Meka spent 5 months doing the renovation, adding unique features and special touches to the space. We strive to make sure it is clean and inviting for all who stay with us...even providing fresh ground local coffee and half & half, shower and hand soaps, and tissues/toilet paper. As avid outdoor people, we hand built the stone wall running the length of the house and are continually creating new planting beds for expanding the garden. Our goal is to create a lush food forest for visitors to enjoy. So far, the edible gardens have fruit & nut trees, berries, native and medicinal herbs, shitake mushroom logs, and seasonal vegetables. Our newest additions are a flock of chickens with a cute chicken coop/garden shed made of repurposed materials.

Best choice I ever made
David and Meka have made a space for visitors that is perfect in every detail. There is lovely space outside for dining or relaxing looking at their lovely garden. The kitchen is perfect for a short or long stay with everything you need labeled and organized. The living room is charming and the bedroom has a lovely queen bed with high grade linens. The bathroom has a well designed walk-in shower with a rainforest shower. The unique sleeping nook is so clever and comfortable with everything in just the right place. Meka responded immediately to the few questions I had and did not balk when my friends (after leaving the days inn in disgust) came to stay their last night on the sleeper sofa. If you are looking for a serene comfortable place this is it. I honestly can't say enough good things about this rental . It is a nice neighborhood in a convenient location. Thanks media and david
Short Asheville stay...
This basement apt was quiet, comfortable and well-appointed. It’s location in a quiet residential area makes for access to the downtown, the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Biltmore and other sights. Our hosts, Meka and David provided a great range of good suggestions. We very much enjoyed our return time in Asheville.
Comfort, proximity and tasteful accommodations!
Convenient to downtown, Biltmore, the River Arts District, West Asheville and the Blue Ridge Parkway, the GrayScott Garden Suite, located in a lovely, quiet neighborhood, had all of the comforts and convenience we could have hoped for. The design and decor was incredibly tasteful, and as with most of our trips, I regret not having had more time there to enjoy the accommodations! The owners’ attention to detail was abundantly evident throughout, and the space was perfectly laid out to provide all the comforts of home while away from home. We loved the well-appointed kitchen and the larger than expected bathroom; why stop there? — we also appreciated the comfortable living room and bedroom, and although not used, the cozy sleeping pod is awesome! The patio provided a peaceful opportunity for some relaxing down time while taking in the yard and flowers. We were lucky to meet David, who was eager to help us make the most of our visit. Both David and Meka were very communicative and responsive from the time we booked through check-out. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this suite, and look forward to the time at which we can return to Asheville and this property. David and Meka are fantastic hosts!
Hi Laurie- Thank you for such a thorough and glowing review! We love what we do...Creating the apartment was a fun, creative outlet and reflects a bit of us, without being too overboard. We enjoy putting together those little details that make things special for our guests.
Looking forward to having y’all again.
This was a nice quiet place to stay - just close enough to downtown to Uber easily if you don’t want to drive. We enjoyed our stay and we were very comfortable in this cozy basement apartment.
It was great having y’all!
I had an amazing time in Asheville, and this place definitely played a big part. It was a great location, very close to downtown and a lot of great food. The hosts were very attentive and took care of all our needs. The apartment was decorated with style with an amazing garden. I would highly recommended it to anyone.
GrayScott is in the historic Kenilworth neighborhood, just on the other side of Beaucatcher Mtn from downtown Asheville. Only 4 min. drive to Downtown.
A short walk up Beaucatcher provides sunset views of the City.
The Biltmore Estate, Grove Park Inn, and River Arts District, circle downtown and are each only 8 min. drive from GrayScott.
Of course, floating or canoeing the French Broad River is always a fun summer activity for everyone.
GrayScott is also a central location to access surrounding destinations such as Lake Lure & Hendersonville to the South; Brevard, sights and hikes along the Blue Ridge Parkway, Sylva, Waynesville, Bryson City, & Cherokee to the West; Weaverville & Hot Springs to the North; and Swannanoa & Black Mtn to the East.
