About this property

1820's Home on 200 acres w/ Sand Beach 5 mins from Acadia Nat'l Park at Schoodic

We welcome you to discover the serenity of Acadia’s Schoodic Peninsula and our historic 1820's home located in the heart of beautiful Downeast Maine. Our historic 1820's building stands on a 200 acre private preserve at the head of Sand Cove five minutes from the spectacular 5000 acre section of Acadia National Park at Schoodic a perfect place for your family and fiends to gather for a real Maine vacation at the perfect distance away from the tourist traps of Bar Harbor etc. The peninsula offers views of four of Maine’s beautiful lighthouses and the most wonderful scenery Downeast Maine has to offer.

Your hosts Sonja Sundaram and Ben Walter, have two very specific goals: to ensure that you have an extraordinary experience staying at their historic Maine property and to introduce you to their ever-growing 200 acre nature preserve. Husband and wife team of Sonja, whose background lies in geography and teaching, and Ben, whose specialities are marine biology and eco-toxicology, are committed to the preservation of this extraordinary place. Our property marries all that you would expect from an historic home steeped in history that has welcome summer guests since 1820 with an unparalleled opportunity to explore and to understand Maine’s environment and natural splendour.

We invite you to experience a relaxing respite on the ocean. Be lulled to sleep by the sound of the surf on our private sandy beach. Individually appointed bedrooms are lavishly furnished with your comfort in mind five feature ocean and two meadow views, all have full private baths and the whole home enjoys a refreshing sea breeze. Enjoy your gathering with family and friends in the many receptions rooms with furnishings reflecting the period of the property as you watch the lobster boats ply the Atlantic just yards away. The kitchen, and three living rooms all look over the ocean.

Our unique sandy beach is a great place to have a picnic, lie in the sun or take a dip in the brisk Atlantic. Explore the rugged coastline, tidal pools, and Maine lighthouses; spot an eagle or osprey overhead; try sea kayaking, yachting or fresh water canoeing. Try the trails of Acadia National Park or our own just behind the Inn. Enjoy croquet on the lawn; relax in the flower gardens or curl up by the fire with a good book or parlor game.

Our historic property is the perfect setting for your beach vacation gathering with family and friends on the bold coast of Maine. Please don’t hesitate to inquire about your special needs. Whether you are travelling with friends or with your entire family our historic property will provide you with a most memorable seaside experience. Your hosts, Sonja Sundaram and Ben Walter, look forward to welcoming you.

The Oceanside Meadows Innstitute for the Arts and Sciences has its home base in the historic timber framed barn circa 1820 located between our two inn buildings. The barn, restored in 1998, now serves as a wonderful space for lectures, seminars and concerts held throughout the summer season. In 1998 some of the summer’s highlights included a week seminar lecture series with Dr. Alan Hale (co-discoverer of comet Hale-Bopp) and astronomer Gary Becker, a lecture from Dr. David Wingate, an ornithologist of world renown, and magnificent evenings of music with Opera Maine.
