About the host
Hosted by Liz Catrina
After my father retired from the software industry a couple years ago, we casually started talking about finding a place in the mountains — somewhere large enough for our whole family to gather. I am one of five siblings, and when we all come together with spouses and kids, there are 29 of us. When we found the upper cabin, we were able to secure it at a good price, but it took a lot of imagination and love to turn it into what it is today. Luckily, the moment we saw it, both my dad (David) and I could immediately see the vision.
My mom has advanced Alzheimer’s, and we know our time with her is limited. These cabins have become a really special place for our family to slow down, be together, and make memories that truly matter. In the last year, the cousins have created more meaningful moments in just a few days here than they ever could in the rush of everyday life. When the lower cabin (this one) became available for the first time in 50 years, we knew we had to jump on it. Even with a large cabin, sometimes having a little extra space is what makes gatherings more relaxed and enjoyable. The two cabins are close enough to feel connected, yet separate enough to allow for quiet time, family time, and everything in between.
We love sharing this place because we want other families and groups to experience the same kind of connection — time in nature, away from the noise, in a comfortable space where you can truly be present with the people you love.

Why they chose this property
We chose this neighborhood because it offers the perfect balance of privacy, beauty, and access to everything we love about the mountains — and in many ways, it felt like this neighborhood chose us. We loved that it was close to town (only about seven minutes from Twain Harte town center), yet set on a little bit of land that feels more remote, serene, and peaceful.
The area is quiet and surrounded by tall pines, with very little traffic or noise — just the sounds of nature, birds, and wind moving gently through the trees. The creeks that wind their way through the neighborhood add a beautiful natural soundtrack, and at night the stars feel especially bright and clear.
At the same time, it’s incredibly convenient. We’re just minutes from Twain Harte’s charming downtown, and within easy driving distance to Pinecrest Lake, Dodge Ridge, Black Oak Casino, hiking trails, fishing spots, and seasonal activities like skiing, swimming, and boating. It’s the kind of place where you can spend the day adventuring and then come back to total calm and quiet in the evening.
We love that this area feels like a true retreat — not crowded, not commercial — but still close enough to everything you might want to explore. It’s a place where you naturally slow down, breathe deeper, and reconnect.

What makes this property unique
What makes our property unique is the combination of privacy, flexibility, and a fresh, thoughtfully designed space that truly feels special.
The cabin sits on two private acres with no close neighbors, creating a peaceful and secluded mountain experience — yet with the rare option to also rent the larger cabin next door on the same property for bigger groups or extended family gatherings. This gives guests the flexibility to enjoy togetherness when they want it, while still having space, privacy, and quiet when they need it.
The cabin itself has been completely remodeled and is fresh, clean, and comfortable, with all new furniture, beds, and finishes throughout. Large panoramic windows bring the forest inside and fill the space with natural light, creating a warm and cozy atmosphere in every season.
It’s a place that blends the feeling of a true mountain retreat with the ease and comfort of a modern home — intentionally designed for relaxation, connection, and making meaningful memories.
