Set on a quiet street in Cambridge’s 02138 neighborhood, this apartment is perfectly positioned between Harvard Square and Porter Square. Walk to restaurants, cafés, bookstores, shops, in nearby Huron Village, or hop on frequent bus routes to get to the Red Line (only 20 minutes walking to Harvard, Porter or Alewife T). Enjoy the energy of Harvard Square and the convenience of Porter — all while staying in a peaceful residential setting.
Fresh Pond Reservation is a beautiful public land just 10 minutes walk away, and can be enjoyed year round by runners, walkers, cyclists, and nature-lovers. Every guest receives a gift certificate for $25 to two local restaurants per booking.

Some how-to's (from front to back):
You will enter the front stairwell and use stairs to the second floor landing. The door to your unit is on the left.
There is no parking available on the immediate block, but you can park briefly if you can find a spot on the street to bring your luggage in and out.

The locks open automatically with your pass code, and must be locked manually from the inside or by pressing the lock button from the outside.

The thermostat is controlled by a sensor outside your unit, so if you need more heat, use the electric fireplace in the bedroom, and there is also a Handy Heat space heater that can rapidly heat the kitchen or bathroom if needed. Since the space is large and very open, the space heaters take much less time to warm the space!

The TV is a Roku and you can log in to your own account if you have one to make it your own and use all of your subscriptions. Remember to log out if you can!

About the home:
This house was built in 1911 as a three family, which is very typical throughout the metro Boston area. These were typically houses built by and for working class families for multigenerational, and extended familiy living. In the 1970's, the first two stories were combined into a single unit with an interior stairway, but the existing front and back common stairs remain, which enabled this apartment to have been created on half of the second story.
I don't mention this just to provide some architectural and social history of the neighborhood, but to point out that there are other people living in the building. As the host, I live on first floor and my bedroom is on the other half of the second floor. We have pretty good sound proofing, but please be mindful of the folks on the other side of the wallls and ceilings!
The house is a combination of old and new, keeping some of the high quality woodwork intact, but the windows are new and should be snug! The walls are original plaster and lathe in much of the unit, so you'll see some texture from years of patching. It looks a little funky but it goes a long way to retain warmth and to provide that much needed sound-proofing.

Safety: There are exits out of the building in the front and rear of the unit. There is a fire extinguisher under the sink in the kitchen and a first aid kit under the sink in the bathroom. There are fire/carbon monoxide alarms in the common stair wells and throughout the house. The thermostat also monitors air quaility.

A few notes on the decor:
The artwork is almost all original works by friends and family of the owner. I am happy to provide information about the works if you are interested.
The bathroom vanity and lavatory sink is built-in to a former china cabinet that was orignal to the home. These were fairly standard in these "triple-deckers". Originally located in what was meant to be used as a dining room, they often had a pass-through panel that allowed the cooks to place the meals right out of the oven into the dining area from the kitchen behind it.

Host profile image
I am a Cambridge local, and restaurant owner who lives in on the property. Hosting visitors is an extension of my passion for hospitality and making people feel at home when they venture out, whether it's a global travel, or just a journey through their day.
I grew up in this neighbohood, and then moved around North America in my twenties, living in New York, Montreal, San Francisco and Los Angeles before returning to my home town of Cambridge. The experience in these other cities, makes me appreciate the little things that give a town it's character, and how much fun it it to discover them.
It's my hope that The Gambrel will be a place for you to launch your journey of discovery during your stay in the Boston area. I am happy to help with any recommendations. I am also the board chair for Cambridge Local First, an organization that promotes local small businesses and resilient local economies, and encourage you puruse our printed local shopping guide you will find in the apartment.

Why they chose this property

The neighborhood is known locally as "Observatory Hill" after it's proximity to the Harvard Astronomical Observatory a few blocks away. It's adjacent to both West Cambridge, famous for the historic mansions of "Tory Row", and North Cambridge which is a family-friendly section centered around the western portion of Massachusetts Avenue.
The area is fantastic for walking, biking and fitness buffs, with wonderful nearby places to go for a run, bike or nature walk at Fresh Pond or Danehy Park.
There are nearby shops and restaurants right in the immediate area, but we are only a 15-20 minute walk or bus ride of less than 10 minutes to Harvard Square.

The southern exposed bay windows, interior French doors and front and back decks mean that light and fresh air are abundant, but if you need to tone it down, black-out curtains can be drawn.
