About this property

Modern-Rustic Cabin: 5 mins to Downtown Nevada City & 15 mins to Yuba River

Cabin at Lost Sierra Gateway | Log Cabin on 1.25 Acres Near the Yuba River

Tucked among towering pines at the base of Banner Mountain, the Cabin at Lost Sierra Gateway is a tastefully modernized log cabin on 1.25 private acres in Nevada City, California — the heart of Gold Country. This is the kind of place where you pour your morning coffee on the deck amongst the cedars, walk out the back door onto a forested trail, and spend the afternoon floating in emerald swimming holes on the South Yuba River. Then you come home, fire up the grill, and watch the stars come out through the treetops.

We renovated this cabin with one idea in mind: keep everything that makes a log cabin special — the hand-hewn railings, the exposed beam ceilings, the warmth of real wood everywhere you look — and update the rest so it actually feels like home. The kitchen has a gas range with a stainless steel hood, sage green Heath Ceramics tile backsplash, quartz countertops, and knotty wood cabinetry that ties the whole room together. The living room has a deep, sink-into-it sofa, a wood stove for chilly evenings, and a corrugated metal accent wall that gives the space a hint of mountain-industrial character. There is a record player with a small vinyl collection if you want to set the mood. We even have a ChargePoint EV charger for topping off your battery overnight.

Upstairs you will find two bedrooms with sloped pine ceilings and dormer windows that let in soft morning light. The primary bedroom has a king bed with a handmade geometric quilt and views into the canopy. The second bedroom has two twin beds and a child-sized futon, colorful hand-painted bunting, a reading nook, and an eclectic, collected feel — art on the walls, a kilim rug underfoot, shelves with books, and a futon for that extra kid guest. Both bathrooms have been updated with modern fixtures, marble countertops, and live-edge wood details. Downstairs, a comfortable sectional couch gives you additional space to crash — the cabin sleeps 4-5 comfortably and up to 6 using the sectional.

The cabin sits on 1.25 acres of wooded property with plenty of parking, a gated entrance, and just minutes from historic Downtown Nevada City. The wrap-around deck is the real gathering place — string lights glow at night and the fire pit is steps away (winter use only — seasonal fire restrictions apply in the dry months). There is a BBQ grill, outdoor seating, and the kind of quiet that reminds you why you came to the mountains in the first place. Birdhouses dot the tall pines and you may spot woodpeckers, jays, and the occasional deer.

ONE OF THE BEST PARTS: THE DITCH TRAIL

The historic Banner Ditch Trail runs directly behind the property, an irrigation canal dating back to the Gold Rush era, and still in use today. Step out the back gate and you are on a flat, scenic path that follows an old mining canal through the forest. It is perfect for morning walks, afternoon bike rides, or letting the kids explore — and it connects to a wider network of trails around Nevada City. You do not need to drive anywhere to feel like you are in the middle of nature. You already are.

SWIMMING HOLES AND THE SOUTH YUBA RIVER

The South Yuba River is 15 minutes away and it is spectacular. The easiest access point is at the Highway 49 crossing at the old bridge, where you will find turquoise pools carved into smooth granite boulders — the kind of swimming holes that look like they belong in a travel magazine. You can swim right below the bridge or cross it and take a short 1.25-mile hike up to Hoyt's Crossing for more secluded spots and dramatic rock formations. Arrive before 11 AM in summer for the best parking. Bring water, sunscreen, and a towel — we have beach towels at the cabin if you forget.

FIVE MINUTES TO DOWNTOWN NEVADA CITY

Nevada City is one of California's most charming small towns and it is right around the corner. The historic downtown is packed with independent restaurants, breweries, galleries, and shops in beautifully preserved Gold Rush-era buildings. Grab craft beer and German-inspired bites at BrewBilt BrewHaus, or have a fancy night out at Dakan. For a classic Gold Country evening, get drinks on the veranda at the National Hotel — California's oldest continuously operating hotel — or pull up a stool at the Mine Shaft Saloon with the locals. The Saturday farmers market runs through the summer and fall, and the annual Victorian Christmas celebration in December transforms the entire downtown into a gaslit wonderland.

For outdoor adventures beyond the Yuba, you are close to Empire Mine State Historic Park (hiking through old Gold Rush ruins), Deer Creek Tribute Trail and its beautiful suspension bridge, Hirschman Trail and pond (great for families), Sugarloaf Mountain for panoramic views, and Scotts Flat Lake for boating and fishing. Grass Valley is 10 minutes away with additional dining, shopping, and the historic downtown district — our go-to there is The Bicycle Thief for East Coast-style pies, farm small plates, and wine.

World class Tahoe skiing at Sugarbowl is less than a 1-hour drive (weather-permitting) up Highway 20 and a short hop on I-80.

WHAT MAKES THIS CABIN DIFFERENT

This is not a cookie-cutter vacation rental. We have owned this property for years and every choice — from the quilts on the beds to the subway tile in the kitchen — was made because we love this place and want you to love it too. The cabin has real character. It has books on the shelves that we have actually read, art on the walls that we picked out, and a record player because sometimes you just want to listen to an album all the way through.

At the same time, we have not skimped on the practical stuff. The Wi-Fi is fast and reliable if you need to work remotely. The Smart TV has streaming apps ready to go. The 3-zone HVAC system keeps every room comfortable year-round, and the wood stove is there for when you want that crackle and glow on a cold night. The washer and dryer are in the cabin so you can pack light. And your dog is welcome — we are dog people and the property has plenty of room to roam within the fully-fenced property.

GETTING HERE

The cabin is 150 miles from San Francisco — about 2 hours and 15 minutes on a straightforward drive up I-80 and Highway 49. Once you exit in Nevada City, you are just a mile from the highway and the transition from freeway to forest happens fast. Self check-in is via keypad so you can arrive on your own schedule.

We had such a great stay at this cabin that it ended up being one of those trips the whole family is still talking about. From the moment we arrived, we were genuinely impressed by how clean, well-kept, and thoughtfully designed everything was. It immediately felt cozy and welcoming, but still spacious enough for everyone to relax without feeling crowded. The cabin had everything we needed and more. The kitchen was fully stocked, which made cooking meals together easy and actually enjoyable. The living area quickly became our favorite hangout spot—comfortable seating, warm lighting, and big windows that brought in beautiful natural views. Even the little details, like extra blankets and games, made it feel like the place was set up with families in mind. The outdoor space was just as enjoyable. Whether it was morning coffee on the deck or winding down in the evening, it was peaceful and scenic. The kids had plenty of room to explore safely, which made the whole trip even more relaxing for the adults. What really stood out was how well-maintained everything was. It’s clear the owners take pride in the property, and it shows in every corner of the cabin. We’ve stayed at a lot of rentals before, but this one stood out for how clean, comfortable, and thoughtfully prepared it was.Overall, it exceeded our expectations in every way. It was the perfect mix of comfort, charm, and functionality, and it made for a memorable family getaway that we’d happily repeat.
