A great place to stay

Wonderful place! Nice getaway from the busier Kona down below. The coffee they provided is excellent Kona coffee so we bought more at a good price. The owners and their son who runs the coffee operation are very friendly and helpful. Would definitely stay there again.

A beautiful mountain retreat!

The property sits high up on the mountain side. It is a quit, very peaceful place. The only things that you really hear are the birds. Turkey, and a myriad of other birds that I do not know the names for. Out the back of the house, the view through large plate glass windows is of tall trees through which the ocean is easy to see. Nights are cool and comfortable and during the day it is warm and pleasant.

Secluded guest home away from hustle and bustle of town

We thoroughly enjoyed staying at the Gillette's guest home. Though extremely difficult to find the first time in the dark, it is a extremely nice house with a view of the ocean, shoreline and sunsets. Being at around 2000' elevation, the temperature is a good 10° cooler than on the coast in Kona. That fact would be wonderful in summer but we were there at a unusually cool time and without any heat the house was pretty chilly in the mornings. As the ads said, the house is surrounded by the Gillette farm and coffee plantation. That means one will see cattle, horses, chickens, turkeys and lots of birds though one has to be able to sleep through the early morning rooster calls. Though the guests need to provide their own food, Nancy has provided more than enough spices and condiments to create tasty meals. A number of items were obviously left over from previous guests and we were happy to add to that stock when we left. Nancy also provided a starter supply of their own plantation's Kona coffee and her son, Isaac, will sell more of that at a very reasonable price. This property is about 15 minutes from the town of Kona and the associated beaches, restaurants and activities--an easy drive to whatever one wants to be part of in the community. We would highly recommend this guest house to anyone wanting to be away from the tourist crowds and relaxing in peace and quiet. Steve

Well-equipped, modern, outstanding cottage in an idyllic setting

We stayed 5 nights and loved it. The cottage has all amenities and is very comfortable (although, oddly, there are no handles on the drawers or cabinet doors). Bring a sweatshirt/jacket for the cool evenings.

Like a ranch? You will love this one.

From the deck we saw turkeys, pheasants, wild boar, and bulls framed by a panoramic ocean view. The cottage was stylish and comfortable. The owners, Nancy and Greg, were pleasant and helpful and we enjoyed our stay and their coffee.

Beautiful and peaceful

Nancy and Greg were lovely hosts with a most appealing Hawaiian cottage. We were hoping for peaceful and were thrilled to find it on this coffee farm in the hills. The cottage was clean and beautifully maintained. We could view the ocean from the deck, watch the cows in the pasture and listen to the birds and chickens; not to mention the sunrises and sunsets! Truly spectacular. Highly recommend this property and its hosts.

Wow! What a beautiful guest home. Private, luxurious, and great hosts!

We had a delightful time at Greg and Nancy's guest house. What a lovely home! Beautiful view of the ocean, clean, wonderfully furnished, and only about 20 minutes from the ocean. Private, quiet, and cozy! Loved all of the books about Hawaii and the lovely decorations. The woodworking was amazing! Great loft area for older children. We felt very safe and at home there. Thank you Greg and Nancy for a wonderful experience on the Big Island! Enjoyed snorkeling, especially in Hanapu'u Bay. Saw thousands of beautiful fish, a turtle and a black-and-white spotted eagle ray. Loved the volcano although it was a long drive. Enjoyed going down to the South Point where we saw 5 whales and saw a couple guys jump off a cliff into the ocean. Bubba Gump restaurant for dinner watching the sun set was our favorite.

What a beautiful retreat above busy Kona!

We stayed at the pole house for 3 1/2 weeks, and we just loved it! Nancy and Greg were the nicest hosts you could think of, and the house is just a gem, we immediately felt at home. What shall we say? We spontaneously booked it for another 2 weeks in April before we're leaving for Europe again!

FANTASTIC!!!

The property was amazing. The house was perfect for us and our two kids (ages 13 and 10). We enjoyed the hustle and bustle during the day whether we were in Kona, at a beach, or visiting Volcano National Park, and then came back and relaxed in the quiet. The stars were amazing from the anywhere around the house. We had everything we needed for preparing meals. There were also beach towels, chairs, a cooler bag, beach mats, and boogie boards for the kids. We didn't use the grill, but it was there if you needed it. Greg and Nancy were great hosts. Everything looked just as their posted pictures. Also, the directions provided led us right to the house. I just cannot say enough positive things. We enjoyed our Christmas holiday and would definitely stay again. Mahalo, Nancy and Greg (and Isaac)!

Beautiful, picturesque, relaxing, perfect for our honeymoon!

We had an absolutely wonderful time at the guest house. We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect place to serve as the home base for our honeymoon adventures. It had everything we needed and more. It was conveniently located close to Kona, but far enough away to be very private, and the location allowed us to tour most of the Big Island in our two weeks. As advertised in the listing, there are roosters that crow in the morning and tree frogs that sing at night. We loved these nature sounds and they didn’t bother us one bit. However, if that’s not your thing then keep that in mind. Additionally, because it is located up the mountain in coffee country it does rain lightly almost every day for a few hours, at least when we were there. This was not an issue for us at all because we were always out of the house during the afternoon and somewhere on a beach in the sun. The rain is very localized to the Kona coffee area so if you were thinking of staying in the house for your entire vacation, this may bother you, but it didn’t affect us at all. The listing was very accurate. We were not disappointed in the least! The view is identical to as shown in the pictures. We had no trouble finding/accessing the place, even though we arrived in the dark. The guest house is also fully stocked in terms of dishes, utensils, towels, basic condiments (salt/pepper, etc.), the essentials for cooking (oil, basic spices), which we found super helpful. The property was very well maintained and clean. We met the owner once, she was very friendly and helpful. We had absolutely no issues while we stayed at the guesthouse. We would recommend this property for honeymooners or a couple who are interested in a private and relaxing setting up on the mountain, away from the business of Kona. You are about a 10 - 15 drive down to Kona and the beaches. We had a great time and although I doubt we will be back (so much more of the world to see) we strongly recommend the property.

Private, Peaceful Retreat

My husband and I spent six nights at the Pole House in March and enjoyed our time there very much. The location is a convenient drive up the mountain from town, perfect for relaxing and recovering from long days exploring. The house is outfitted with most anything you might need, and Nancy is available by phone or text message to answer any questions. Hey, you know you are staying on a coffee plantation when you find three different coffee makers in the kitchen! We were thrilled to find a French press--other choices included an electric drip machine, and a stovetop espresso pot. We appreciated and very much enjoyed the gift of a bag of Keopu coffee. The house was comfortable, clean, and the views were lovely. Mahalo, Nancy & Greg!

Great Place to Start a New Year

We arrived late because of major weather and airport scrambles but as soon as we walked in, we got on the human track again. Nancy is a charm, dialed us into a wonderful New Year celebration we'll not forget. Thank you Nancy! Loved the house and views, loved gecko's chirping by the window, I actually recorded one on my iPhone then played it back, totally confused the poor little guy. Weather was a little cooler than we anticipated, we didn't expect Nancy could do anything about that. Totally enjoyed the time, we'd go back again.

Beautiful home and property! Great location in the mountains yet close to town and the beach.

Our family of four had a wonderful time at this guest home on the Holualoa coffee farm estate! The home has a fabulous view and decks, comfortable living areas, and a fun loft with 2 beds for our 2 boys. The kitchen was well equipped and the owner welcomed us with fresh local fruit and coffee from their farm. We snorkeled on the Kona coast every day and were within 15-45 minutes of every beach we wanted to go to. The home also has a fun paddle tennis court and 2 boogie boards we could borrow. Mahalo to Nancy and Isaac for making this a very enjoyable and memorable stay!

Tranquility on the big island.

Everything is as described however it wasn't able to capture the island peace and tranquility we experienced. I think the first thing I noticed is the lovely green belt in front which made for an ideal home for so many birds including wild turkeys. Great to watch and listen to the birds at breakfast or sunsets. Nice to have easy access to stores below for occasional food shopping to cook in or many restaurants. Nice relaxing space to return to after daily trips around the island. Side note - it is a little cooler in the mornings up on the mountain so bring a layer to be comfortable for enjoying your morning coffee on the deck. Aloha!

Perfect setting away from the busy tourist spots

We had a lovely time at the pole house! It was so peaceful and the views were beautiful. The house is set up away from the city but still close enough for a short drive to the beach and downtown Kona. In the morning we woke up to find horses, pheasants, a pig, cows and chickens in the pasture. The owners left us fresh fruit and a bag of coffee from their own brand (delicious!). Zero complaints!

Fantastic place to stay on the Big Island

This house was by far the nicest place we have stayed in any of the Hawaiian Islands. It was very private and the very well appointed. Nancy was great in that she addressed any issues promptly and was a great host. If you are concerned about seeing other people while staying here, do not worry as it is totally private. we had a basket of local fruit and some local coffee when we arrived which was a nice touch. Would definitely stay here again! If you want to get a true feel for the Kona uplands, this is the place!!

perfect hideaway

The pole house! This place was perfect in so many ways. Loved the sounds of the various birds, and the awesome bird feeder on the beautiful wrap-around open lanai/deck. We couldn't have found a better place to spend 5 weeks. We loved our leisurely mornings at a cool elevation, having easy access to the beaches and kailua town while being able to escape the heat and enjoy cool (sometimes chilly) evenings. The owners, Nancy and Greg, are attentive and ready to help with anything. This beautiful private house will be our destination next time we come to Kona. We'd recommend it to anyone wanting a private, peaceful getaway on a lovely wooded acreage. It was everything Nancy and Greg said it would be.

Beautiful, peaceful home away from home

This home and Big Island made my husband and I seriously question whether or not we could leave PA forever in favor of Kona, HI. We stayed 10 days in the Pole House and found it met every need: the space was more than enough for the two of us, the kitchen was well stocked, and there were plenty of blankets for the chilly evenings. And the windows! There were big, clean windows everywhere, letting in tons of natural light. Though we spent most of our time exploring the island, the house was idyllic for lazy mornings or the quick nap in between adventures. The scenery was beyond my expectations as it's tucked away on the coffee ranch, rather than a part of the tourist sector. Still, it was only a 20 minute drive to great places to snorkel or eat in Kona. It was a bit tricky to find at first - and there was a large pothole before the driveway which scraped the bottom of our rental car - but the host, Nancy, is both very responsive and friendly, so that will probably be fixed before your visit. Nancy even stocked the kitchen with some local fruit to welcome us when we arrived! We loved our stay and would definitely return (as soon as there are funds!)

Ideal and Idyllic

My granddaughter and I had a perfect stay at the Pole House. The location of the house is very convenient to all of the West Coast of the Island and just minutes from Kona. The house is simply and beautifully appointed and completely comfortable. The host family is extremely helpful and kind and we appreciated the local delicacies we found in the fridge when we arrived. We loved the evening cricket song, the birds at the swinging birdfeeder, the peace and quiet of the plantation. We are dreaming already of when we can get back to the Pole House.

About the host

Hosted by Nancy and Greg Gillette

Host profile image
Both Greg and I grew up on Kailua Beach on Oahu. The Gillettes are well known in the sailing world. We have been married for 35 years. Our son, Isaac, owns Keopu Coffee and manages the farm and mill. He, his wife, Jen, and our grandchildren, Cy 8 and Julia 4, live on the property as well.

Why they chose this property

Our guesthouse offers a unique Hawaii experience. Located on wooded acreage at 2200' elevation on the slopes of Mount Hualalai near Holualoa Village in famous kona coffee country.

What makes this property unique

A cool peaceful and private retreat from the hot hustle and bustle of Kailua Town, restaurants and resorts. Beautiful and expansive views of the coastline and surrounding acreage. The house is perched on poles above the pasture so you can enjoy interacting with the livestock and wildlife. The house is built on sloping land so that the main deck is 12' above the ground but the entry is at ground level. The loft is spacious and open with a large window and two skylights. Beautiful corian counters and custom cabinets in the kitchen and bathroom; venetian green glass tile in the shower. Wrap around decks and a paddle tennis court.
