About Mark Grein
Mark Grein is originally from the U.S., but on a chance trip to Europe back in the nineties, he was enchanted by the magical allure of Prague and decided to set up shop here, right in the middle of central Europe not long after the Velvet Revolution. He and his wife Mirka are filmmakers, but decided to try their hand at renovation when they bought this beauty in the heart of the Old Town last year. They did much of the renovation work themselves, especially in restoring the original ceiling stucco decoration, spending many hours up on a ladder covered in wet plaster and paint.
Mark Grein purchased this Apartment in 2013
Why Mark Grein chose Prague 1
We knew we had something special when we first set eyes on this diamond-in-the-rough. All of the doors in this residential building have wooden entrance doors or portals that are decorative pieces unto themselves. One inside the flat, we saw that the elaborate but faded ceiling decorations were just screaming to be restored, and the original owner had left many of the original details in this old place, such as doors, door handles, parquet floors, windows(including original glass in some of the windows-- look closely and you'll see the tell-tale 'waviness' in some of the panes). The layout was perfect--- three connected rooms, but all with their own entrances/exits, a large and separate kitchen, along with a small balcony. Located on the 1st floor of a neo-gothic buliding just around the corner from the famous Charles Bridge in the heart of the Old Town, but on a side pedestrian street, it just felt like the right place. We think you'll agree :)
What makes this Apartment unique
As with all properties, 'genus loci' is the most important thing, and this flat has got it in large amounts. It is the perfect place to begin and end a walking tour of the beautiful city, and the quaint street has many great cafes, fantastic wine bars and restaurants, and even though it's close to the famous bridge, it's managed to hang to a lot of its local character.

Beautiful Apartment- Great Location
We enjoyed staying in this elegant, beautifully renovated apartment. It was perfect for two couples traveling together. Mark was very responsive to our questions. He arranged taxi service for us between airport and the apartment for arrival and departure. A real bonus was the complimentary danishes/bread and provisions/drink in the refrigerator upon our arrival. The apartment was within easy walking distance of everything that we wanted to see. We very much enjoyed our stay in the beautiful city of Prague.
Thanks Lynn, we're so thrilled that the place worked so well for you. Come back to visit us again soon!
Gem of an Apartment in Prague
This was a beautiful apartment in a quiet neighborhood, but close enough to all the sights to walk. Great restaurants and bars nearby, too. The apartment itself was great for 2 couples. Pictures display it correctly. Host was easy to work with, arranged transportation to and from the airport. Personal check-in at the apartment. Definitely recommend and would definitely stay here again.
Thanks Carol, we're glad that you enjoyed your stay so much with us, and that the Old Town location worked so well for you. Come back for a return visit soon, take care.
Lovely Apartment in Fantastic Location
Fantastic location. Great communication with owner. Very easy check-in process. Spacious apartment. Would highly recommend. Thanks for a very enjoyable stay!
Thanks Joann, we're glad that you enjoyed yourselves at The Karoline and in Prague.
Professional property management and hosts.
Mark arranged VIP transport from train station and to the airport. Contact by phone. Met us at the apartment, showed us everything. Provided a few days of essentials like bread, pastries, cheese, orange juice, coffee, beer and wine at no additional charge which was unexpected and a very nice personnal touch. Two BR and 2 bathroom with nice kitchen and living room with working fireplace, and small courtyard balcony , all in the authentic old European style was perfect for 2 couples. Location on a safe, quiet street but central and easy walking distance to the sights and restaurants.
Hi Garry, we're thrilled that you liked the classic European style of the flat. We really put in a lot of work to keep as many of the the original elements as possible, including the windows, door handles, art noveau glass, and decorative ceiling stucco work, so we're glad you liked it! Take care, and come back soon for a return visit.
Charming apartment in excellent location
Our group consisted of 2 couples so this apartment was perfect, giving each of us our own bedroom and bathroom. One of these was an en suite, while the other had the bathroom off the entrance hall and was a bit smaller. Both were quite adequate though.
We used the transport service Mark obtained for us, and although he got to the airport a little late, we eventually found him and it all worked out. Klara was waiting for us at the apartment to check us in and give us some information about the apartment itself and tips on where to go and what to do. She was very helpful. The apartment itself is old and very charming. We never had any problem with street noise or noise from any of the other apartments. It is on the second floor with no elevator, which wasn't a problem for us but there are stairs to climb if you have issues with that. The kitchen was supplied with a French press for coffee, which at least one of us figured out how to use so he was assigned coffee duty every morning. There were plenty of dishes and glassware. We never cooked so I can't comment on that, but we found the kitchen well equipped for our needs.
The apartment is in a very central location so we walked almost everywhere. The tram is also an inexpensive way to get around. I'd highly recommend this apartment for the price, location, cleanliness and function. We had an amazing stay in this beautiful city!
Excellent, we're so glad that The Karoline worked out so well for you. And yes--- as they say, location is everything, and she really is sitting in the heart of the Old Town, but on a quieter pedestrian street. And thanks for you patience concerning the pickup-- as you said, we were a bit later than expected, but you managed to stay calm and all was well. Take care, and come back to visit Prague and The Karoline soon!
Perfect place to stay!
We stayed at The Karoline for four nights in September and found the apartment very comfortable from all aspects. Mark made sure there were things in the refrigerator plus fresh bread and sweet rolls for our arrival. Appreciated that there was both a washer and a dryer - not always the case in Europe.
Loved the location too!
We are located just a few minutes walk from the famous Charles Bridge on a quaint, historical street filled with cozy cafes, great wine bars, and tasty restaurants. We are in the heart of the Old Town, so it is the perfect base to go sight-seeing in one of the most beautiful towns in Europe.
