Charming little cottage.
We absolutely loved our week in Newport. The camp was adorable and just loved the dock out over the water right off the bedroom. Couldn't help but have a fun time there.

We are so glad you enjoyed your stay at our cottage on Lake Sebasticook! Hope you can return next summer.
We enjoyed our fourth stay at the cottage this summer. Lake views, swims, and boat outings kept us busy and happy. We had cooler weather this round, but still got into the water every day. Checked out the new Renys location in Pittsfield and made day trips to Bucksport and Orono. We aim to return and repeat the fun :)
Cottage was located directly on the lake... the kids enjoyed running out and jumping into the lake/off the dock multiple times a day. Location is close to stores and restaurants. Would recommend bringing a bath mat or towel for outside the shower as we ended up having to use a beach towel. Overall we really enjoyed our stay!
Our third stay at the cottage was excellent. We were fortunate to have great weather at the lake - I'm not sure the water has ever been so warm. Easy communication with the owners and the home was as comfortable as we remembered it to be. Swimming, boating, and bird watching made the week fly by. Thank you!
Myself with My daughters and their daughters enjoyed a week on the lake at this cottage. Plenty to do with boats, dock, pedal boat! Games and toys for the little ones and kitchen had everything we needed to cook! Amazing gas grill for our cookouts and enjoyed fires in fire pit at night! Great neighbors that checked on my adult daughters when they floated out into middle of lake on their raft. Everyone enjoyed themselves.

Will be sure to add that to our listing. Thank you
This historical lakefront cottage was full of quirky charm. Our family of four delighted in the proximity to the water, the unique layout of the home and the comfortable furnishings. We endlessly swam, used the boats and watched the lake. Very quiet and peaceful - we were grateful for the retreat at the end of a busier vacation. Wonderful running and walking in the neighborhood. A heron and several loons sighted (in addition to the ducks!). Easy day trips to Pittsfield, Bangor and Waterville to visit some of our favorite spots. Would love to return, thanks for lending us this lovely place.

We are so happy you got some swimming and boating in and took advantage of the local surroundings. We hope you’ll return soon.
We really enjoyed our return visit to the cottage on Sebasticook. The views are fantastic, access to the water easy and diverse (swimming, paddle boat, floating, kayaks), walking options quiet and plentiful...a welcoming neighborhood to ease into a vacation mindset. We spotted two bald eagles, plenty of loons and ducks. The cottage itself is comfortably appointed and charmingly quirky. A unique place to land for a week and all four of our family members have what we need here.
We ventured out to Borestone Mountain, Bucksport for lunch & Fort Knox, Winslow for Big G's, Orono for a UMO campus visit, Pittsfield for Manson Park & Renys...our teen even enjoyed a free paint program offered at the Newport library. Check the Rolling Thunder for area activities!
We already look forward to another future trip, thank you :)

Wow, you covered alot of territory in your 1 week stay. So glad you had so much fun. Hope to see you again in the future.
Great property on the lake, everything you need is there or in the town 5min away. Enjoyed the sunrise’s and was able to catch a couple of fish as well. Would recommend to others. Owner is easily reachable if needed.
We had a great visit to Maine with our two children (ages 4 and 1). Camp was extremely convenient to family nearby. A cute lakefront property with nice beach and although we didn't use them there were kayaks and a paddleboat available for use which is nice. We had a smooth checkin process and binder with many resources and information about the property was available and clear. As a family with 2 young children the layout was a little difficult given loft style with no doors on rooms or stairways, but there were some baby gates available. We also missed that there were no towels available, so make sure to pack some! We took off a star for cleanliness as we felt it hadn't been cleaned very well prior to our arrival. Overall though we had a nice stay and enjoyed our vacation visiting family in Maine.
The property itself is fantastic! So cute and well cared for and stocked with so much to help you enjoy time at the lake. Beautiful views, great neighborhood and GREAT fishing. The wraparound deck adds a ton of square footage to the space and we spent most of our time on it.
The only negatives we experienced were: 1) The cottage faces due east and was in the shade after 12pm every day. For us this was a minor drawback. 2) The water quality of the lake was not what we were expecting and we had to travel elsewhere to go swimming. Both of these things have nothing to do with the owner or their wonderful cottage, but they could be helpful to know for future travelers.
This is an authentic cozy cottage that is very typical of many seasonal lake cottages. Not fancy, just the way life is here in Maine. You might call it down-home or from another era of bygone times. The house is old, not luxury, yet, it is very adequate and comfortable.. This had good waterfront access with shallow water which is super great for young kids, and I might add very hard to find. It has an excellent dock and lots of water toys for all ages. We loved the balcony which provides an excellent view of the lake and sky and all that goes with it: osprey, loons, ducks, sunrises, sunsets, moonrises, stars. The cottage is in a very quiet area but also very convenient to shopping and I 95. We found it to be a perfect location.
We flew into Maine to visit family and stayed at this awesome little lake house. It was the perfect location to start day trips from, as well as stay in and relax by the lake.
Would give more than 5 stars if possible for communication with owner. We had a few small questions resolved almost immediately and couldn’t be happier with our experience!
Interesting historical setting , Peaceful and quiet, short drive to Moosehead Lake area for great hikes. Our timing of this trip was just a little early for the fall colors though there were some nice changes already.
Overall charm and location cannot be better. The cabin has lots of windows, so it's bright and sunny, and just steps from your private beach. Bring towels from home as they are not provided AND there is no TV. One is provided, but even local stations don't come through. Using our phone Wi-Fi, we could get PBS, but nothing else. The door in the basement bedroom slides with difficulty. Washer and dryer are provided, but you can only do dark clothing because the water is funky and might discolor lighter things. Stairs have no handrails, and there is a huge tripping hazard in the yard where a slab of concrete, that for some reason, has handles in it. We loved the cabin and the lake, but some things need attention.
The property is everything that we hoped for a perfect summer vacation. The lake cottage is just the right size for our family of 6. Everyone had their own comfy bed and we enjoyed the small private beach, the quiet lake and everything around us. We also rented a boat and a jetski that we enjoyed throughout our stay. This is a memorable vacation for everyone in my party especially the kids!!! Thank you for sharing the property with us. Til next time.
Our kids had an absolute blast here! They were in the lake every day swimming. The views were amazing and the location was perfect for us to travel other places. The house was very clean and perfect for our family. Can't say enough great stuff about it!
We had a great vacation. Thanks so much and we hope to visit again.

About the host
Hosted by Sara Lyskawa
I, (Sara) am a Maine native who has deep connections to Lake Sebasticook, where it has served as the backdrop for treasured memories spanning from my childhood into adulthood. I earned my degree from the University of Maine, Orono and currently work as a clinical dietitian. My husband (Alan) Michigan-born husband (a Notre Dame graduate who works as a Mechanical Engineer) and I are now creating similar experiences for our two children; Abigail (13) and Aiden (10) who spend summers on Lake Sebasticook building lasting memories. We currently reside in South Carolina, but return to Maine several times a year to enjoy our new lakehouse with local family and friends.
Why they chose this property
Welcome to historic Camp Benson of Lake Sebasticook; a place that is very near and dear to my heart for 30+ years. My great grandparents owned a camp not too far from our current property, but unfortunately, burned down in the late 1960's. Luckily my grandparents resurrected another camp in its spot until the land/camp was eventually deeded over to my brother in the late 1980's. I have some of the most amazing memories on this lake. From learning to water ski, building play boats, fishing with my grandfather on the end of the dock, canoeing, ice fishing, ice skating, racing up and down the camp road by foot or bike, and learning to drive the boat. Lake Sebasticook is very near and dear to my heart and we are so thrilled to be able to share our cottage and this area.
For us, it is the perfect location as my immediate family is within a few miles which was a huge appeal. We truly love vacationing here as it is chance to create memories with our own family as well as an opportunity to get away from it all.
What makes this property unique
This property sits upon once what was a camp built in 1900, our first lake house purchase. Having grown up on Lake Sebasticook, it has always been my dream to own property. In 2012, my husband and I brought this dream to fruition and bought a historic camp built in 1900. However, after years of dealing with ongoing structural problems that required constant "renovation bandaids," we decided to demolish the old structure. Rather than continue patching up the century-old building, we chose to start over completely, resulting in our newly built cottage. During construction, we were able to incorporate some of the old cottage into the new cottage; incorporating decades old floor boards and pine ship lap.
