Great pet-friendly spot, full kitchen with all utensils to cook meals as needed, loved the fire pit and sitting on the dock relaxing. Needs a good deep clean but it is a house in the woods on a lake so some dirt is expected. All in I had a great time and would definitely rent this house again.
The host was great and very accommodating. You can tell they continue to make thoughtful updates to the home. The space was great and work perfectly for two family’s. I look forward to booking this home again.
This house is perfect for me and my family. This is the second time we have stayed and we will definitely being staying there again. Owners were very responsive to any questions we had. House is in a perfect location on the lake.
We have been staying at this property every year and obviously we love it! The owner is great and quick to respond. He is constantly working to make upgrades to the property. The view is fantastic and we enjoy fishing and kayaking. It’s our family’s favorite vacation!
Absolutely fabulous location! So much wildlife! We actually saw a deer get chased by a dog and swim across the lake to safety! A highlight of the trip :). The house is older and a bit musty, but just beautiful and plenty of space for everyone. Coffee on the deck in the morning and the hot tub at night were so wonderful. Owners are great and quick to respond. We would definitely stay again.

Trash cans outside were full upon our arrival and disgusting. Dock was a mess and the lounge chairs covered in bird poop
I struggle to write this because the place is pretty, it is adequate. Would I stay here again? Probably not. The owner was very prompt in attending to thing we needed, which was appreciated. I however, did not get notice that we needed to bring our own sheets and towels, a first for me, until two days before our arrival, and we had already been on the road for a week. Had that been noted in the listing, Id probably not book this property. The upstairs bed was very uncomfortable and though I knew the property was dog friendly, I didn't expect to have quite so much dog hair floating around. Now, for the positives... its a spacious property that has potential to be fantastic. There's obviously an intent to keep improving it, and there's some projects ongoing we can tell. The kitchen is very pretty and mostly well stocked. I didn't find the broom until our next to last day because it was outside. There was enough room for us to all spread out and the downstairs beds were comfortable to my sons. The trash lot was only open from 7-7 and not on the holiday, which was less than convenient. Lots of seating area and lots of entertaining area. We loved watching the sun come up in the cove every morning. I wish the owners the best of luck and hope they continue to improve this property.
Place was great! The walk to and from the dock can be challenging if you have any issues. But then again it’s lake living!! Thanks!!

VERY dirty and worn property with some positives
Had I not made reservations for a boat rental later in the week, I would have returned my bags to my car and headed home immediately after the first hour in the property. I have no ill will for an owner trying to earn income on a vacation home, but this property is in dire need of a good scrubbing and adjusted prices if repairs are not addressed. I submit this review understanding that my rating may take a ding, but in the spirit of VRBO, I feel the owner should address these issues before renting again or renters should be fully informed about what they should expect. Here are my observations:
Pro: Pet friendly, spacious, very nice lake view, the grill was clean and operational, hot water plentiful, king bed downstairs comfortable, lots of DVDs, good washer and dryer, the owner communicated well and allowed us a Sat. to Sat. rental instead of their customary Sunday to Sunday.
Con: Active mice infestation in the kitchen (found droppings in the cutlery drawers and pantry) and evidence they have been in the downstairs closets. The house is VERY worn and the filthiest VRBO rental I have ever seen.
Examples: Upon arrival, we found a huge clot of hair in the downstairs shower drain and remaining debris from prior renters’ showers, toothpaste on the downstairs half bath counter, disgusting moldy woodwork at the base of the downstairs shower, insect and mice droppings on downstairs closet floors, dirty windows that impact the nice view, dirty sliding door tracks (not a big deal unless you have to dig your finger in them to place locking poles), dirty smudges near almost every light switch and on walls, stained and dirty stair rug pads, downstairs TV is literally held together with duct tape with no directions on how to operate, glasses were placed in the kitchen cabinets with heavy grease marks, dirty oven that looks like it has not been cleaned after a year or two of use, household surfaces (furniture, fireplaces, shelves, etc.) had not been dusted in a long while, all of the oven mitts had food stains and bits adhered to them. We found greasy red food crumbs on the upstairs fan/light remote, broken and missing towel bars, and a stained bed cover in the upstairs bedroom.
This is a natural wooded lot on SML, there are trees, leaves and steps between the house and the water. We saw many birds and butterflies. The house had everything we needed and was a great comfort to return to after a day on the lake swimming, boating, fishing and tubing. The covered dock provided sun or shade and easy access to swim, float, fish and kayak. The location is very convenient to many things by both car and boat. The owner was very responsive to our requests during our stay. This was our first time at SML and everyone we met was very nice. We look forward to coming back.

The house was ok but the property out side was a mess fallen limbs everywhere leafs should be remove
Was a easy process put the pictures online should be updated property needs a lot of work because of it I won't rent there again
We had another wonderful visit to SML!! Our third year staying at this property and we love it. As usual the house was clean and welcoming. We spent every morning having coffee on the deck and enjoying the beautiful view:) Jonathan was very prompt and responsive to any questions we had. Already booked for next year!!!
We had a great time. The owners were quick responding to questions. The property had everything we needed. The cleaning service wasn't great tho because the house had a odor of musty pet smells covered up with chemicals. There was a lot of dust and dog hair on the basement furniture. Definitely in need of a new grill as well. The the AC thermostat & temp did not regulate so we had to shut it completely off for several hours a day. But again, the place, location and owners were great.
This time of the year the trees are absolutely beautiful!! The dock is a downhill walk to the water so if you have any issues with walking be careful! We loved fishing off the docks and taking sunset kayak tours of the lake. We visited peaks of otter and other hiking trails in smith mountain lake as well. We visited Ramulose ridge vineyards which is a mile away! Make sure yon get a wine flight. The hot tub was a perfect touch and we enjoyed ourselves to the max! We feel refreshed and can’t wait to see smith mountain lake again. The house is plenty spacious, clean, and easy to access. Highly recommend if you’re looking to book!
Amazing time! House was beautiful, very clean and had everything we needed. House is about 8min away from grocery stores and restaurants. Boat rentals available just around the corner. Enjoyed our time on the lake and fishing from the deck. 5 stars!! Highly recommend!!
Loved the location on the lake and talking to the other neighbors. Rented a pontoon boat for first 4 days, and the dock was super accessible. For the last two days, we enjoyed taking the two kayaks to explore the cove in the immediate vicinity and met many of the neighbors.
This home was perfect for our family vacation. The location on the lake was ideal. Home had everything we needed, big open kitchen and cozy bedrooms and of course a wonderful dock to hang out by the lake.
Easy experience renting. Great house - well stocked. Loved the boat dock. Deep water. Close to wineries. Only negative ….. Steep walk to the boat dock so elderly mother could not make it down to the dock.
We enjoyed our second trip here and will be back next year! The house was very clean and had everything we needed for a fun and relaxing family vacation. We enjoyed coffee on the porch and fishing/swimming off the dock!

About the host
Hosted by Jonathan & Randee Wittkopf
Hi! We are so excited to own this amazing property on Smith Mountain Lake. We reside in Northern Virginia and have loved having an escape to beautiful Smith Mountain Lake! Our family loves to be on the lake - whether it's tubing, boating, fishing or floating. We hope your family will enjoy our home away from home as much as we do!
Why they chose this property
Jonathan grew up water skiing on the lakes in Louisiana and wanted to teach our boys how to ski, paddle and fish. Dragonfly Hideaway is perfect for spending quality time with family, relaxing and making lifetime memories. We hope this will be the case for you!
What makes this property unique
Dragonfly Hideway is nestled in the woods overlooking a beautiful quiet cove off the main lake. The house is a perfect size to spend quality time with the family and the cove allows you to float, swim, paddleboard, and kayak away from the busy main channel. Mornings are peaceful as you drink your coffee on the deck and watch the sun sparkle on the water. Spend the evening fishing off the dock or relaxing in the hot tub on the lower patio. Bridgewater Marina is a short skip across the lake where you can rent ski boats, tubes, pontoon boats and jet skis. Kick back and enjoy!
