About this property

Beautiful Rural Retreat 20 minutes from Sea, near Padstow, Trevone & Port Isaac.

PLEASE NOTE: During high season summer weeks, we do SATURDAY to SATURDAY bookings only - but we're open to inquiries about shorter lettings during other times.

Middle Treneague is an old stone house with a large, charming and rambling garden in a hamlet just outside the historic market town of Wadebridge (five minutes by car or 20 minutes on foot). While parts of the building date from the 17th century, it was extended in the 19th century to become a working farm until the 1950’s. Charming, comfortable and characterful, rather than a pristine modern house, Middle Treneague is surrounded by open farmland and oak woods. It is a peaceful, private and secluded place, lovely in all seasons. On wet Cornish days, (which sometimes occur even in summer) the gas fired central heating quickly warms up the house and the sitting room, with its powerful wood burning stove, becomes an especially cosy place to sit and read. The television is in a separate room.

Large rambling gardens surround the house, with terraces on different levels, designed by the writer who lived there in the 1960's. He planted yuccas, fig trees, old roses and lavender among the ruined walls. We have added a row of small birch trees with white trunks and a grapevine in the greenhouse.

There's a small barn (Owl House) in the grounds of the house - but the properties don't overlook each other. Bicycles can be hired nearby to explore the Camel Trail. The famous town of Padstow - with its many restaurants, and bustling harbour, is forty minutes away by bike, and twenty minutes by car. The sea can be reached in twenty minutes by car, on both sides of the Camel Estuary (For example New Polzeath for surfing, Trevone Bay and Daymer Bay.

Entering through a small hall you come into the dining room, looking onto the back garden from the oldest part of the house. It has beautiful old slate floors and is furnished with a painted french dresser, a Venetian mirror and a round antique wooden table seating six. A traditional, retro, farmhouse kitchen leads off this room, (new cooker fridge/freezer, washing machine, dishwasher, microwave) with long wooden table. There are two sitting rooms, the smaller of which, the ‘Monks’ Room’, doubles as a TV room, while the larger one, known as the ‘White Room’, has a wood burning stove, and large windows looking over the garden. The ground floor has beamed ceilings, slate floors, and lovely old pieces of furniture. Of the three double bedrooms upstairs, the first has a king size bed (zip and link), the second a 4’6” bed, and the third has two large gold cane work beds - 3’6”x 7’ each. There are two bathrooms: a downstairs wet room and an upstairs bathroom with view towards the garden.
This old and characterful house is stunningly beautiful on sunny days and in hot summer weather, but do bear in mind that it rains often in Cornwall and the weather can be damp and the skies grey. We have well serviced central heating to keep the house warm during those times.

A great find.
Wonderful cottage, well equipped and easy for access to north and south coasts. Close to the town for Indy shops and supermarkets and the most wonderful fishmonger. Would highly recommend and would definitely return. We loved it.

Gorgeous quirky house
We had a lovely week, the house is so characterful and spacious and clearly loved as a family holiday home. Large gardens to explore and so quiet, yet only a few minutes from Wadebridge which is a lovely town, from there you can cycle the Camel trail. Beaches are a short drive away, and beautiful countryside is on your doorstep. Anne went out of her way to make sure we had everything we needed. Thank you for a great stay!

Hello,

PLEASE NOTE: We do SATURDAY to SATURDAY bookings only during the summer months, but we're open to enquiries about shorter lettings during other times.

We are three sisters who let our much loved family cottage in Cornwall now and then (it's a best kept secret). Middle Treneague has been in the family for many years, and has a personal quality untypical of many holiday cottages.

Why they chose this property

The nearby small town of Wadebridge is traditional and unspoilt, with many small and interesting local shops, a good cinema, several pubs and restaurants and the famous Camel trail for cycling to Padstow, which is bustling with eating and shopping opportunities, (Padstow is 20 minutes away by car from our house).
The countryside surrounding the house seems untouched by time - natural and not commercialized. However, the Eden project and Lost Gardens of Heligan are fairly close and the sea is twenty minutes away in each direction, either side of the Camel estuary.

What makes this property unique

Lovely old house, absolute peace and quiet, big garden, greater spotted woodpeckers, and the sound of owls at night. Wadebridge is a twenty minute walk away, but when you're at the cottage it feels as though you're in the middle of nowhere, and have gone back in time. We love the house ourselves and think we offer a highly competitive price. The most important thing for us is that people who stay at Middle Treneague will appreciate its special qualities as much as we do.
