Just 2 miles from historic Ashbourne, Swallows Cottage is a beautifully restored stone retreat set down a private lane in 5 acres of gardens and orchards. Perfect for families or couples, the cottage blends French-antique charm with modern comforts: a large country kitchen, cosy sitting room with wood burner, antique four-poster, modern bathroom with underfloor heating, fibre broadband and a private heated pool (open June–Aug). Walk straight from your back door to the picturesque village of Tissington and enjoy easy access to Chatsworth, Haddon Hall, Alton Towers and superb local pubs.

The space:

• Sleeps 4: one double with antique four-poster + TV, one twin room. Travel cot & high chair available.
• Large farmhouse kitchen/diner with scrubbed pine table (seats 8), Smeg fridge/freezer, dishwasher, washing machine/dryer.
• Cosy sitting room with huge leather sofa, wood-burning stove, DVD collection and plenty of books.
• Modern bathroom with limestone floor and underfloor heating. Fresh white linen, fluffy towels and pool towels provided.
• Private heated outdoor pool (June–August) with adjacent dining table; Chesney wood-burner barbecue for cooler evenings plus Weber charcoal bbq
• Gardens & orchards (help yourselves to plums, damsons & apples in season).
• Fibre optic broadband; Delonghi bean-to-cup coffee machine + La Cafetière.

Guest access & outdoors: Private lane, ample parking. Five acres of grounds, heated pool (summer months). Direct footpath from the back door to the historic village of Tissington — ideal for walks and countryside exploring.

Location: 2 miles from Ashbourne (Georgian market town), a short drive to Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall, Kedleston Hall, Sudbury Hall and Alton Towers/Splash Landings (around 30 minutes).

Excellent local pubs and gastro pubs nearby including Callow Hall, The Old Gate (Brassington) and The Duncombe Arms (Ellastone). Activities: horse trekking in Tissington, cycling and sailing at Carsington Water, and family fun at Alton Towers.

Wonderful Cottage in a Beautiful Setting

We had a wonderful stay in the cottage. It was equipped with everything we needed and set in beautiful gardens. The kids loved the table tennis, badminton and heated pool. Izzy and Simon were fantastic hosts and we highly recommend this cottage. The location was fabulous with so much to explore all around.

Simon and I bought The Priory, Swallows Cottage and The Old Engine house in 2009. Since then we have renovated The Priory and Swallow's Cottage to ensure maximum comfort - whether it be beds, heating or endless hot water. Our landscape gardener has developed the grounds, especially around the swimming pool, sympathetically and with great detail. Our three children are often away and we relish the chance to look after our Swallows Cottage guests and love introducing them to our special Derbyshire "finds". We love being in such a peaceful spot but are endlessly grateful that we are just such a short distance from Ashbourne.

Why they chose this property

Having lived in a local village (some 6 miles from Asbourne), very happily, for 10 years, we were thrilled to find the combination of rural peace but without being miles from civilization - with Ashbourne just 2 miles away we can easily whizz in for milk, papers and take-aways without feeling that we are in a built-up area. An added bonus is that we can walk by footpath, directly from the front door to Tissington and beyond.

What makes this property unique

When we bought the property we were advised by many friends not to put a pool in - how glad we are now that we ignored their advice! This Summer has been glorious - Derbyshire at its very best. Breakfasting by the pool on a quiet Summer's morning can't be beaten.
