About this property

Experience Bordeaux's lovely country side on a winery only 25 min from Bordeaux

This holiday house is facing south has a private terrasse and garden. Each bedroom has its own shower room and the main living area mixes modern furniture with old stone walls (typical of Bordeaux). Chez les Grands-Mères is set up with all modern comforts (WI-Fi, comfortable sofa and beds, TV, fully equipped kitchen).
The ground floor combined kitchen and living room on the ground floor with a large sofa, armchair, TV, on the lounge side and on the other side of the room an open kitchen equipped with a fridge, dish washer, washing machine, stove, oven, coffee maker, electric kettle. The dining table seats 4 people comfortably.

The first floor has two bedrooms. The master bedroom has a four poster bed : 1,4m x 1,9m with its ensuite ( shower, wash basin and toilet). The twin bedroom has two single beds of : 1m x 2m( they can also be joined to make a double bed of 2Mx2M) and its own small shower room ( shower + wash basin), On the landing there is a separate toilet. Both rooms have nice views overlooking the gardens and forest.

In the garden is a bbq and a garden table and chairs where you can enjoy your meals overlooking the garden. Chez les Grands-Mères, has a party wall to another holiday house : Le Pigeonnier ( 4 to 6 guests - Home Away listing number 8627926). Both houses have their own private garden separated by a 2m hedge.

Finally you can enjoy relaxing around our secured *swimming pool : 12m x 6M shared between our 4 holiday houses.

Staying on a family owned vineyard you will benefit from a free English language tout vines, the winery and a tasting of our 6 different wines. This visit and wine tasting takes about 1hour and a half.

Passionate about their region, Jean-Louis, Nola and Andréa (their daughter) will be very happy to share their local knowledge and their favourites places with you to help you discover the best of the area.

This is an ideal destination for a family holiday or to share with some friend in a spacious and self-catered holiday house. The beautiful green surroundings in the middle of the vines will help you to relax and experience life on a family Bordeaux winery.

In the grounds there is a ping-pong table, a volley ball area and swings for the children. We also provide free bicycles to ride to our local bakery (800meters) for the croissant lovers or to go and get some oysters (from the Bassin d’Arcachon) on Sunday morning in the village.

We had a wonderful stay at this property. The Gîte was not only beautiful but also very well equipped with everything we needed. The owner was incredibly welcoming, even sitting with us to share thoughtful recommendations for things to see and do in the area. Thanks to their advice, we discovered places we might have otherwise missed. It made our trip extra special.This was truly a relaxing and enjoyable experience, and I will definitely be returning. Fabulous gite and holiday location

An amazing gite, well equipped and spacious. Comfortable bed which is often not the case! Great pool. Beautiful surroundings of the vineyard and woods. Hosts really knowledgeable and gave us great recommendations for day trips, plus wine tasting and vineyard tour.

Serene stay

The property was a serene spot after visiting the bustling city of Bordeaux. The hosts (who live on the property) were extremely friendly and welcoming. They went above and beyond to ensure we had everything setup for our infant son, gave many great local recommendations and lead us through a wine tasting. I would stay here again and recommend anyone else to do the same :)

Fantastic reoa

We had a great stay with our 2 daughters (2&4). The house was really clean and wall equipped (incl a nespresso coffee machine). The owners are very friendly and extremely helpful. We had dinner at nice spots thanks to all their tips. We would really recommend a stay and love to visit again!

Chateau la Gontrie for the Rugby World Cup!

Wonderful family experience staying at the Chateau la Gontrie while enjoying the Wales vs Fiji game in nearby Bordeaux. Location is breathtaking. Wonderful hosts - Jean Louis’s wine tour of his property is extremely informative. We enjoyed our morning bike rides to the nearby village for croissants and coffee. Memorable experience and Wales won!

Great find in Saint-Caprais-de-Bordeaux!

We had a great 2 night stay and wished we had a few more days to spend here. We loved the tour of the vineyards and learning about the old school wine production, enjoyed the tastings and learning about clairet! and we thoroughly enjoyed hearing all the stories. The property was clean, kitchen was well appointed, check in and check out was smooth. There are a number of units on the propertyand would be a great base for large family gatherings. With only a couple days in the area, we were grateful for all the suggestions. We highly recommend checking out Pizzella in Cambes for artisanal pizza along the Garonne River :)

Spacious and clean, Rural feel but close to Bordeaux and St Emilion

Very nice and clean place, kitchen well stocked. We liked the vineyards nearby and visited St Emilion - only about a 40 minute ride. We liked St Emilion very much We went on the vineyard tour and they gave us a bottle of wine included in the stay. The owners are right next door and very friendly and helpful. it was a very relaxing place to stay. Grocery stores are nearby of Super U and Carrefour. Bordeaux downtown is only about 15-20 minutes away. we left via dropping our rental car off at Bordeaux St Jean train station and took high speed train to Paris

Warm and welcoming

Andrea greeted us on our arrival and showed us around the house and property, giving a thorough explanation of everything. A bottle of red wine was left for us on the table and we were kindly offered pasta which we declined as we had eaten. Jean-Louise came the next morning and ran through all the places to see in the area, leaving us with a mud map and brochures. A great help. The hospitality continued through to the last day. We recommend doing the wine tour with Jean-Louise. The property is well equipped in the kitchen and bathrooms. We appreciated having a dishwasher and washing machine. We really enjoyed our stay and would recommend it if you like to stay out of the city a bit. Thanks for your hospitality.

Es war ein wunderbarer Aufenthalt mit sehr herzlichen Gastgebern. Eine Weinprobe, Kräuter und Obst stets aus dem schönen Garten, einer Auswahl an kostenlosen Mountainbikes jeglicher Größe und einem tollem großen Pool. Weite Außenanlage mit Tischtennis und mehr. Separater, uneinsehbarer, schöner Gartenanteil/ Terasse und eine für 4 Personen mit 2 Bädern perfekte Wohnung über zwei Etagen. Überall super Insektenschutz vor den Fenstern. Mit einer Waschmaschine und einem Geschirrspühler/ Gefriermöglichkeit ist es auch eine bestens ausgestattete Küche. Bordeaux ist mit dem Auto gut zu erreichen. Die Gegend bietet schöne Ausflüge. Rundum ein unvergesslicher Urlaub. Ganz herzlichen Dank!

We have stayed in other gites. This was much better in terms of space and how well-equipped it is. It was very clean on arrival. Run by friendly French and Australian family. They provided lots of helpful suggestions of places to go. The family produce their own wine and I enjoyed the tour and wine tasting. I was also very lucky to be around for the harvest of the white grapes and Andrea and Jean-Louis took their time to explain the process to me. The gite and its rural location, only 25mins by car from Bordeaux offer the perfect balance of tranquility and city activity.

Podemos, honestamente, dizer que adoramos tudo. A casa é muito bonita, confortável, incrivelmente limpa e bem apetrechada com tudo o que se pode precisar para umas férias em família com criancas. Wir haben unseren Aufenthalt vollkommen genossen und alles entsprach der Beschreibung, wenn diese nicht sogar übertroffen wurde. Sehr schönes und komplett frei zugängliches Weingut, man hat nie den Eindruck, dass man "stört". schöne Terrasse, der Pool ist sehr gepflegt und schön, die Wohnungsausstattung ist komplett und alle Fenster sind mit Fliegennetzen ausgestattet. Der Hausherr steht sehr hilfreich und beratend bereit und freut sich sein lokales Wissen zu teilen. Ein Ort an den wir gerne wiederkommen.

Une vaste propriété !

Un grand logement dans une propriété de 8 hectares, calme et tranquille et surtout très propre. Proche de Bordeaux et assez loin pour profiter de la campagne. Ein Platz zum Wohlfühlen

Wir suchten eine Unterkunft , um uns auf einen Wohnungswechsel von Deutschland nach Nouvelle Aquitanie vorzubereiten. Wir fanden ein Domizil , welches in hervorragender Weise unseren Ansprüchen genügte !! Die Unterkunft ist mit allem ausgestattet , die Lage ist excellent ! Sehr ruhig am Rande von Saint Caprais de Bordeaux gelegen . Die Gastgeber waren vom ersten Augenblick an auf uns und unsere Fragen eingestellt und wir hatten immer einen Ansprechpartner.Es fällt uns schwer, nach 2 Monaten Aufenthalt diesen gastlichen Platz zu verlassen und wir möchten uns sehr für unsere fast schon familiäre Aufnahme bei den Gastgebern bedanken. Wir können diese Unterkunft bestens weiterempfehlen ! Michael und Sabine

A perfect rural France getaway

The property was immaculate and extremely well equipped. The gardens and pool area were beautiful. The family invited us to help ourselves to unlimited figs and herbs. The host family were very knowledgeable, welcoming and generous to us. The property is ideally located for exploring the countryside, the city and the coast. The village supermarket is just a short walk away. We had a marvellous time and you will too!

Jean-Louis has travelled for 4 years around the world and met his wife Nola (from Australia) when traveling in Melbourne. In 1975 they decided to come back to Bordeaux to help Jean-Louis’s family with the farm at the time. Then in 1984, Jean-Louis decided to create the winery where you can now find 6 different wines (red, dry white, clairet, rosé, sweet white and sparkling wine).

It’s in 1998 that they both decided to start the adventure of receiving guests. First starting with le Magnolia, then renovating 2 houses in 2000 and le Relais in 2010. The main building which is about 400-year-old used to be a coach house where horses were changed over just before going or coming out of Bordeaux. Le Relais used to be the stables.
That’s why you will find a metal horse head on the top of its façade and on the wine label.

Their daughter Andrea (the eldest of their 3 children) who lived in Australia for 6 years came back to work with them since 2008.

It is in this family surrounding that you will be welcomed for your Bordeaux holidays.

Why they chose this property

Chateau la Gontrie is an ideal base to discover all of the beauties of Bordeaux and its surrounding area in a calm and relaxed country side. Only 20 minutes from Bordeaux, makes it ideal to visit the centre and all of the main wine areas: Saint Emilion (40 minutes drive), Sauternes (30 minutes) or Pessac Léognan (30 minutes)…etc

Being on a family winery you will benefit from the free visit of the vines, winery and of their 5 different Bordeaux wines (Côtes de Bordeaux red, Bordeaux dry white, Bordeaux rosé, Bordeaux clairet, 1ère Côtes de Bordeaux moelleux : sweet white) and their 6th wine which is a sparkling wine. This visit takes around 1hour and half and is in English of course.

Passionate about their region, Jean-Louis, Nola and Andrea will be happy to share with you their local knowledge and their favourite visits.

Living on the property, Jean-Louis and Nola will always be happy to help you out during your holidays if ever you need assistance, or with any questions you would have during your stay. Andrea will also be happy to assist you with setting up your activities: like booking a French patisserie lesson, a surfing lesson in Cap Ferret, a restaurant…etc.

It is an ideal destination to resource yourself surrounded by your family or friends in a spacious sunny holiday house.

Finally, we do believe that having a good bed is 50% of a good holiday that’s why we take a special care on the quality of our mattresses and that our holiday house meets all the needs of modern life such as Wi-Fi, TV, well equipped kitchen etc.
