The superb living area takes full advantage of the views, and the sunny patio is the ideal spot to relax and watch the waves and dine al fresco. Narrow lanes from the doorstep wind down to secluded sand and shingle beaches. Berry Beach is just a short walk. Children will love the the donkeys Margot, Mavis and Elvis they are a favourite with vistors to Blegberry, and the large play field is the perfect spot for them to let off steam. The famous sandy surfing beaches of Westward Ho! and Bude are an easy drive and for family fun, the Big Sheep and the Milky Way adventure parks are close by. There are numerous National Trust properties in the area, as well as the RHS gardens at Rosemoor and Docton Mill. Clovelly with its quaint cobbled streets and picturesque harbour is a must. The village of Hartland is just 3 miles and has a good selection of village shops and pubs all serving good local produce. The historic port of Bideford with its lively market, Lundy Island ferry, array of shops and other amenities is just 15 miles. Golf, fishing, sailing, surfing and horse riding available locally. The new film The Salt Path starring Gillian Anderson was partly filmed here. Shops and pubs 3 miles.

Lovely stay at Smugglers Retreat, despite the weather.
Lovely stay at Smugglers Retreat, despite the weather. Very noisy in the master bedroom upstairs due to the wind and rain - it kept us awake on a few of the nights!
Hot tub was brilliant and the views are amazing. Bit disappointed the games room was not in use - we didn’t realise it was shared and we were not informed beforehand that we could not use it due to Covid. The games room was a big part of our decision on this cottage! Overall a fantastic holiday in Hartland and the cottage has everything you you need for a self catering holiday.

The cottage was lovely and had everything you needed.
The cottage was lovely and had everything you needed. Comfortable beds and showers were powerful. Bath towels provided are quite small. Beautiful view and the hot tub was amazing - six of us used it every night even when it was chilly outside. Lovely for a BBQ if you get the weather for it - we managed one! We were so disappointed that the games room was unavailable all week due to Covid measures (one of the main reasons that we booked this cottage in case of poor weather and being so remote) and feel that should have been reflected in the price. Lovely welcome from the hosts who left wine in the fridge, cookies and crisps. Beautiful walks and scenery.

Beautiful position overlooking the sea.
Beautiful position overlooking the sea. Warm and cosy cottage, excellent facilities. Lovely walks all round, a working farm with sheep, a donkey and Holly the beautiful golden retriever. A shame that due to COVID-19 the games facilities weren’t available. Hot tub was fantastic under the stars. Great to be able to accommodate the dog. Would definitely recommend it.

Stunning countryside location, nearest supermarket is 30 minutes away but we wanted the peaceful surroundings.
Views and walks are stunning, the cottage is on a working farm so there are animal noises in the morning (which we loved)
WiFi and a play park for the kids, hot tub was our favourite part of the cottage! Kitchen is well equipped and beds are super comfortable. Huge BBQ for summer alfresco dining and the staff are wonderfully attentive to your every need. It was so nice to receive a bottle of bubbly and some posh crisps & biscuits on arrival, a great touch. We really didn’t want to leave!
The only improvements I can think of are to provide a couple of fans for the bedrooms upstairs as they were very hot, even with the windows open and some fly spray as there were quite a few (can’t be helped living so close to farmland)

We booked this cottage for 4 days and wished we had booked for longer! It was so comfortable, cosy and very homely. Amazing sea views and scenery. Our little boy loved the animals and the play area as well as the jacuzzi bath. Great games room where I played pool for the first time in years. Loved the hot tub too!
The cottage kitchen is well equipped and we were able to cook some nice meals.
I would say bring your own shower/bath products as they are not provided. I read a review where someone commented on the little extras in the bathrooms so I thought that meant toiletries! Towels, however, are provided.
We visited Hartland Quay and Clovelly which are a short drive away. I can highly recommend Shamrock Fish & Chips in Hartland. Unfortunately we didn’t get to visit The Hart Inn this time but definitely next time as we will be back!
The only thing I regret is not asking someone how to get to Berry Beach. It does say in the welcome book how to get to it which we tried to do but couldn’t see the duck pond? Oh well, another thing to do next time!
This was our first time booking a self catering cottage holiday and a first as a family too. We loved it and it was perfect for us. Looking forward to many more cottage holidays in the future!
