Ground floor garden apartment (+ optional studio), quiet central location
This lovely apartment is situated in a wide-built 19th C maison de maitre (lawyer's house) shaded by towering plane trees within the heart of this sunny southern town with its narrow lanes and pretty squares. Great care has been given to make sure that it is well furnished and equipped, comfortable and attractive. Although so central, the house is situated in a quiet area only a few moments away from good bakeries, small shops, cafes, restaurants and bars. Saturday mornings sees the bustle of the colourful local market in the streets around. Stunning country walks just a couple of minutes away.
CERET DIARY : Musee d art moderne permanant collection plus special exhibitions * Every Saturday morning local market in centre of town * end June to end August Tuesday evening market * Cherry Festival 1st weekend June * Dog Show * Music Festival * Ceret de Toros Feria (one big party with fireworks, lots of music, bull fights and running of bulls through streets - fun, but noisy!) weekend nearest 14 July * End July Festival de Sardanes (wonderful local dancing contest) * July and August music in Catalonia Festival * July & August: most Wednesday evenings locals really do dance the Sardane in the streets * Town picnics up high on the hill at Fontfrede * La Ronde Ceret (Ceret fun-run and half marathon with many serious runners alongside locals) mid-September. Local autumn classical music festival.
BEACHES AND OUR WONDERFUL LOCAL LAKE: A few minutes by car at St Jean-Pla-de-Corts are 2 small lakes - one for swimming and the other for water-skiing. There's a great little summer restaurant but it's also a favourite with locals just for a picnic and swim or for families who might enjoy the amazing tree walks and zip wires. About 30-40 minutes drive to the coast and a good choice of attractive small towns: Collieure, Porte-Vendres and Banyuls which have good sandy beaches nearby and lots of nice restaurants.
LOCALLY IN FRANCE: Up the Tech valley from Ceret, with our local mountain Canigou dominating the area, is the spa town of Amelie-les-Bains with the charming village of Arles-sur-Tech and it's Benedictine abbey a little further. The road then leads on to the small fortified town of Prats-de-Mollo with Fort Lagarde above it (reached by a tunnel, built to move troops secretely - or a path if preferred). You can then drive over the Spanish border to the market town of Campredon. Or you can bear off this road that runs by the Tech to various charming villages with winding mountain roads - or visit St Laurent de Cerdans to see the small local factories making canvas fabric or espadrilles - if you do, then drive a little further to Tapis (just over the border) for a rustic lunch with a magnificent view. A short spin along the motorway and you have access to the Tet valley and many wonderful small villages (the other side of Le Canigou) and the Yellow Train up into the Pyrenees from the fortified town of Villefranche-de-Conflent. A little further along the motorway, the attractive small towns of Narbonne or Bezier are both worth a trip. You might like to consider a visit to the Cathar castles of Queribus and Peyrepertuse - not least to marvel as to how hard it must have been to construct these huge eyries perched so high. But don't forget to visit Perpignan (about 30 mins from Ceret) which is a charming and attractive midi town with it's enormous winter Palace of the Kings of Majorca.
SPAIN: The Spanish border is about 15 minutes motorway drive from Ceret, and just over it lies the border town of La Jonquera - the spot where truck drivers stop to have amazing lunches for next to nothing (and it's the place to stock up on food at Spanish prices!). Between the border and Barcelona (about 2 hours away) stretches the Costa Brava, with many charming small bays, as well as the larger well known (and less attractive!) resorts. Particularly of note is Dali's home in the fishing village of Cadeques and the Greek and Roman archaeological sites at Empuries with its charming three little beaches. Inland, Girona is a lovely town with a beautiful old quarter and good shopping. Not far from there is Besalu: a stunning medieval jewel of a town with an amazing bridge spanning a ravine. Figueres has the fantastic Dali museum. And so many other wonderful small villages, small towns and beaches with some great restaurants.
Walking: Wonderful walks all year round - plus organised guided walks with an informative local guide will take you to places you may never get to on your own - into the mountains, by the sea or over the border into Spain. Some are half-day, and are graded from easy to sportif. The weather is usually fabulous for walking through autumn, winter and spring, and, in summer, the heat is avoided by walking high in the mountains. The local tourist offers offers a good selection of self-guided walk plans.

The apartment is in an old traditional building in a beautiful street in the heart of Ceret. My husband and I enjoyed the spacious apartment with the luxury of two showers, bedrooms and large well equipped kitchen and living room. We particularly enjoyed the garden for relaxing and sunbathing, and the terrace for eating outdoors. We totally recommend this apartment and it's beautiful location.

Delighted you enjoyed your stay so much and made the most of the garden. I will be doing some work to it this winter - hopefully, more roses and clematis. The plan being to spread flowering throughout most of the year. Thank you for your strong commendation.

Lovely apartment in excellent location
The apartment was located in central Ceret with everything this beautiful town has to offer on your doorstep including the wonderful Saturday market. The apartment was beautifully presented with spacious rooms and a lovely garden. The owner was very pleasant to deal with and we would not hesitate to recommend this property to anyone, hope to be back one day!
Highly recommend the restaurant L'Atelier de Fred on Rue Saint Ferreol for a real foodie treat.

Thank you! Feed-back so welcome. Really nice to know that visitors enjoy the apartment as well as what Ceret and area have to offer - which is a lot! Also, very good to know what a visitor has particularly enjoyed - especially, good restaurants. Quite a number of my visitors return several times - perhaps you will be one of them!
We had a wonderful stay in Ceret. The apartment
as pleasant as expected. The location was perfect …especially the market day. The Art
gallery was amazing for such a small location..
However, the countryside is beautiful, so its no
wonder that they were attracted to the area.
We had a great holiday. Thank you for sharing

Thank you for your very kind review. And so happy that you enjoyed our wonderful Musée d'Art Moderne. As you say, it is truly surprising to find such a large public gallery of such quality in so small a town! We are very privileged.
The flat is in the centre of the beautiful old town of Céret. Step outside the front door and you are in a delightful road with tall plane trees and very little traffic.
Internally, the flat has been well cared for and has everything you need for a comfortable stay. The garden is even more attractive than in the photos. Parking is no problem. If there was no space in the Place de la Liberté or the Place des Tilleuls we parked on the Rue de Fontfrède. This was just a few minutes walk away. We enjoyed our visit and may well return one day.

Amazing ground apartment, town and surroundings
We don't have enough words to express how wonderful our visit in Céret was.
The apartment is a dream come true; its architecture is very beautiful, it has been decorated with good taste,it has lots of space, a great kitchen and the beds are very comfortable.
Highly recommend this flat if you have small kids. The garden is amazing. We spend a lot of time in there.
The town not only is beautiful but full of surprises, you can find anything and everything you need around the corner and there are a lot of artists. Also great coffee shops, bakeries, butchers and so on.
Very friendly place to walk with kids, spectacular sightseeing, biking and very friendly locals.
The manager and owner are very nice, friendly and helpful persons.
Thanks for making our stay in Céret perfect ;)

Thank you. What a review! Great for me but also for the town and area, which are both so special. There are always more places to explore, however many times one visits. And I try really hard to keep up the standards - so, great to see that recognised too!

Fabulous apartment in the heart of old Ceret
My husband and I (early fifties) had a fabulous fortnight in Wendy's spacious ground floor apartment; which is in a lovely
old French house. The location was perfect, the apartment was spotlessly clean with everything we needed; even beach chairs and mats. We enjoyed having the odd glass or two of wine in the beautiful little court yard garden; with the charcoal BBQ sizzling away.
Ceret is a beautiful little medieval town- one minute heaving with activity and the next quiet and peaceful. There are plenty of restaurants to choose from and Pablo's Bar was a great place to people watch. The Saturday market was a lovely "French" experience. We had a great night watching a "Rock Band" in the Dali Bar, literally around the corner from the apartment. Some nights we fell asleep to the wonderful music and sounds of the town.
We particular enjoyed our trip to Villefrance Venet Les Bains, where we caught the yellow train into the Pyrenees. Wendy's recommendation of the beach "Le Racou" was spot on. The €1 bus to Perpignan is a must!! Spain is readily accessible via the motorway. We had a lovely day in Cadaques on the Costa Bravo but beware of long traffic jams on the mountain road into the town!!
We would love to return to "Wendy's place" in Ceret; home from home- her agent Jay was so helpful and on hand at a moments notice.
This apartment is one of the best we have stayed in. We highly recommend it!!

Thank you for your glowing recommendation. You obviously had a great time! Céret is often a-buzz in August (although happily the house is away from most activities and music is not obtrusive). The rest of the summer Céret is usually a little more sedate - so it works for those seeking more peace and quiet with only high summer bursting into more pzazz. I am delighted that you will be coming back one day!
De accomodatie was nog completer dan verwacht. Céret bleek een gezellig stadje, er was veel te doen in de periode dat wij er waren.
De schaduwrijke tuin was aangenaam, met name tijdens de hete dagen.
This is a lovely, spacious apartment on the ground floor of an old townhouse right in the centre of the old town. You're within walking distance of Ceret's fantastic art gallery and all the cafes, restaurants and bars. There's also wonderful walking straight from the town into the foothills of the Pyrenees. The flat is well equipped and furnished, tastefully decorated and has a very comfortable sofa and beds. We loved the location and Ceret itself. Our only disappointment was the darkness of the flat. Despite having very large windows, the kitchen/dining room/sitting room and master bedroom are at the back of the house and face north. This means they get no sunlight. The garden/patio also faces north and is surrounded by buildings. So it doesn't get much sunshine at all. When we were there (late September/October) it only got about two and a half hours of patchy sunshine from about 2.30 pm. However, if light isn't a concern for you, then this would be an excellent choice.

Thank you! I do try to make both my apartments feel like real homes and not just rented spaces! And I'm glad you could make the most of the garden, which was just a jungle of weeds and junk with not one plant when I bought the place in 2003! I have a number of return visitors who come nearly every year - maybe you will be back too sometime!

Lovely apartments conveniently located in a magical town.
We rented both the ground floor and first floor apartments as well as the ground floor studio for the month of March. We're writers who came to write in an inspiring setting, and we had a wonderful time. The apartments are well equipped and very comfortable. They're on a beautiful street lined with giant plane trees, close to the center of everything -- including the amazing Saturday market. What more can we say? We loved it all!

Thank you! I love the idea of your group all working away on your various oeuvres. I do hope Céret and the surrounding spring countryside inspired you all. I love using both flats and the studio to be there with my children and grandchildren - one can be together but also separate. Hopefully, you and your fellow writers might consider returning one day.

A super flat in a good location.
Ceret is well situated to visit the Pyrenees, the Argeles area and the Costa Brava. The flat is situated in the town centre but the street is not noisy, except on market day when those sleeping in the front bedroom get a very early call! Parking is available locally but not in front of the building which has lots of character, housing several flats. We were on the ground floor to the rear of the property with a lovely garden (beware mosquitoes). The flat was very well-equipped with just a couple of problems. The towels provided were well worn and one was stained and the freezer had not been defrosted in months, so was iced-up. Previous tenants had left a considerable amount of food in the cupboards. These were all problems at the local end over which, we appreciate, the owner would have difficulty supervising.
There is no TV or DVD player provided which was not a problem for us but which may be a problem for those who have children. The furniture and equipment were all in excellent condition and I can recommend this accommodation. We had a great holiday.

After your stay of 2 whole months you must be real experts on the area. I'm so pleased that you enjoyed your stay so much. Even you couldn't have exhausted all the beautiful and interesting sights in the area or a little further afield, in Spain or a deeper into France. Wonderful visitors - welcome back any time!

A gorgeous apartment in a fantastic location
Highly recommend staying here for a week or 2. We went as a family with our young children. The flat was very comfortable, and stocked with everything you'd need. The garden is beautiful and well looked after. It's very well positioned - just behind an idyllic local square where the bars and restaurants are. And there is a vibrant French market which runs past the house on a Saturday morning. Plenty to do locally in the way of walks, beaches and lakes. I'd happily stay again, maybe for longer next time!

Thank you for your review. I'm a bit disappointed that I only received 4 stars but that may reflect that unfortunately my property manager did not turn the heating on far enough in advance for you to arrive to fully warm flat! For which I do apologize and will ensure that it does not happen again. Also, I have taken on board your suggestion re installing a log burner - which was very much on my mind anyway. It will have to wait for next year to be worthwhile and I will get that sorted during the early summer. You told to me that you would very much like to return, so I appreciate that you enjoyed your stay. So I hope to welcome you back - maybe next year.

Excellent!
This was our third stay in Wendy's excellent flat, and we hope it won't be our last. We have been coming to Ceret for 35 years on and off and have stayed in a wide variety of places. Wendy's flat is definitely our favourite. It is comfortable, efficient and extremely well equipped. The location is perfect; in the old town, but quiet and calm; (even when the wonderful market is set up right outside the door all is quiet within the flat!) We can highly recommend everything about the flat and Ceret itself and are looking forward already to our next visit.

It's such a pleasure to receive a review from returning visitors - especially such an enthusiastic one! Thank you. As an owner who doesn't get here enough, I'm ever surprised by the places I've yet to visit or that I'd like to return to. I hope you'll be back to enjoy the area that you already know and then to explore the surprises that still await!

Thank you for your review. But I have to say that I'm most concerned and rather upset to receive a 3 star one. I don't think I've had less then 5 stars in the 15 years I have rented out the apartment. I would very much appreciate your sending me a short email to let me know where you feel there have been shortcomings as your review does not actually mention any details. I care deeply about the quality of what I'm offering and genuinely welcome any constructive comments so I can keep up the quality of a real holiday home from home.

Comfortable apartment in lovely French town
Comfortable, roomy and well-equipped apartment. Just a short walk to all the amenities of the town. Surprisingly quiet for the centre of Ceret. Very pleasant outdoor area for sitting and dining. We know Ceret well and love this interesting, bustling and friendly town with so much going on - which is why we keep coming back!

About the host
Hosted by Wendy Wilmot
I am a longtime Londoner, a semi-retired professional property manager and lettings agent, with a grown up family and 4 small grandchildren. I enjoy travel and, hopefully, I know what most visitors want and expect of a well-managed rental property.
Why they chose this property
Having travelled extensively through France during various vacations most of my adult life and being a Francophile, I happened upon Céret one summer and loved the place. Having done all the wrong things: i.e. no research, no checking other properties, etc, I bought the 1st floor flat in a matter of weeks and I bought the ground floor (a total wreck that needed much work ) not long afterwards. I loved being near the mountains (but not in them), being a short drive from the Med and having Spain on my doorstep in one direction and the rest of France in the other. I enjoyed the market on Saturdays right outside the door and the relaxed, friendly feel of this sunny little Midi town. And, for a Londoner, I loved the feeling of space - a big sky and wild walks just a few paces away. Plus the nearby lake for swimming and the sea with its cliffs and beaches only a short drive away.
What makes this property unique
This ground floor flat has a contemporary feel and is cool in summer and snug in winter. It also has a great kitchen with everything needed for serious cooking. The private garden with its high walls has a shady terrace - a huge asset in the summer. The apartment has proved very popular with visitors with limited mobility. In fact, many visitors return many times!
