About Angeline Bondarenko
We first discovered Captain Lock's Cottage in 2000. It was dilapidated but oozed charm. We renovated with the intention to retain all of it's history and original ambience. The cottage is very comfortable with all of the creature comforts you need for your holiday. The cottage garden was developed using plants from the original garden. It is truly a gem that won't disappoint.

Why Angeline Bondarenko chose Rhyll
Captain Lock's Cottage was built in 1869 and is one of the original cottages built on the Island. The first white child was born in the cottage! There is a plaque commemorating Captain Lock at the local jetty. The cottage was built in three stages by Captain Lock, the first part being built from sealer's huts from French Island that were dismantled and re purposed to build a home for Captain Lock and his family. We fell in love with it and saw the potential of restoring it to it's original charm. When we first peered through the windows we saw the original chandeliers hanging from the vaulted ceilings! The views were gorgeous and Rhyll itself had an ambience that we fell in love with. It is a dear cottage that all our travelers love.
What makes this Cottage unique
This is one of the oldest cottages on the Island. The garden compliments the ambience of this home. It is indeed a Home Away from home!

Excellent homely accommodation
Spacious warmly decorated accommodation for your visit to the island. Wouldn’t hesitate to call again
Perfect little hideaway
This place is perfect if you just want to hide away. It’s less than 5min walk to the local shops but you need to drive to Cowes before you get into the action so we spent heaps of time just relaxing at home. The view from the bedroom and balcony is amazing and being tucked away up the hill and away from the main road means the place is nice and quiet. We’ll be back for another lazy weekend.
Very relaxing location
Nice outlook. A resident kookaburra sat with us and shared grapes during the day. At night a little ring tail possum popped down onto the veranda to say hello! We had a very relaxing stay.
Lovely home - could use a few tweaks..
I booked 5 nights at the cottage for myself, two young boys, sister and her husband, and my young nephew.
The cottage is at lovely location, with ocean views and a nice surrounding garden. We particularly loved the front lounge with all its natural lighting.
The cottage itself has a very rustic vibe, which we enjoyed.
There are a few things for improvement though...
- Firstly, there was only 1 plug for the bath, kitchen sink and laundry sink. With young kids that we wanted to bath whilst another adult did the dishes, this was super annoying. I also need to put a white tshirt in the laundry sink with stain remover at one point, so we couldn't do any dishes etc whilst I was soaking it. We did search high and low for another plug, but only found a smaller one that didn't fit.
- There are a few doors with very loose handles on them. Not the end of the world, but would make it nicer if you didn't feel like the handle was going to fall off everytime you opened the door.
- This one isn't a complaint but more a heads up.. If using the BBQ, you will need to go to the General Store to collect a gas bottle (prepaid by owner). Not an issue, unless you go to cook after 5pm.. when the General Store is closed.
- There is only one fry pan (& a few other saucepans), so would be good to add an additional one for those wanting to cook a few things on the stove.
- We couldn't get the oven to work. Not sure its broken, but could not work it out so we gave up.
Lastly, this is not a complaint but a disappointing part to our trip.. My brother in-law found out he had cancer just over 4 weeks before our trip. Once he got his chemo scheduled, he realised he wouldnt be able to make the entire trip, along with my sister and nephew (they had to cut the 5 night trip short, only staying 3 nights). I realised it was a long shot, but I reached out to the owner (as I had already been emailing back and forth with her over finalising everything before our stay) and asked if it was at all possible to cut the trip short and get a refund on the two nights. I didn't really expect it would be possible at short notice, but was giving it a go for the sake of my brother in law and sister. What was disappointing, was after explaining all this to the owner in the email, I got no response what so ever! Not even a "Sorry to hear, but won't be able to refund". I had several emails with her before that, so very unlikely she didnt see it.
Thank you for staying at Captain Lock's Cottage. We are pleased that you enjoyed the ambience of the cottage. The cottage was built in 1869 so many things about the cottage reflect this such as the original door handles. Thank you for letting us know about the missing plugs. We have since replaced these. It is important to look in the two ovens that the kitchen has in case tenants have put cooking utensils in them. The cottage has two large good quality frying pans so I suspect this is what has happened prior to your stay.

A beautiful cottage in a tranquil location which was perfect for a relaxing break.
Rhyll is nestled on the sheltered, green side of Phillip Island. It is full of bird life being situated in World Heritage listed Mangroves. It is away from the hype of the tourist centres on the Island and a short walk to the dog friendly beaches. The Fairy Penguins, Koalas, Seals and Kangaroos are a 'must see' of the Island.
