About this property
Currawong Cottage Vivonne Bay
Currawong Cottage is nestled in the dunes, adjacent to the coastal reserve. Surrounded by native bush it is a haven for birds and wildlife. Perfect peace and seclusion with just the sound of the waves breaking, and only a short walk to the stair case leading down to the beach.
The cabin comprises a large well equipped country kitchen and living area, three bedrooms (one with a double bed and trundle, the other with a queen-sized bed, ensuite and ante-room), and a sleepout with a single bed and double bunk.
The main bathroom has a large old fashioned bathtub, with shower.
There are extensive verandahs and decks with a gas barbeque and outdoor dining areas. You can catch the morning sun or settle down with a book and an apple in the afternoon (after wearing the kids out on the beach.)
A lovely rustic feel, with all the comforts of home.
Local Attractions
Vivonne Bay has everything for the beach-lover. Situated on the mid-south coast, it offers both seclusion and proximity to the many attractions of the central and western end of the island. These include Flinder's Chase Conservation Park, Remarkable Rocks, Admiral's Arch, Kelly Hill Caves, Seal Bay, Raptor Domain (birds of prey & reptile displays not to be missed!), The Little Sahara (giant sand dunes), The Eucalyptus distillery, Clifford's Honey Farm (all your Ligurian honey needs & home-made honey ice-cream to die for!). Across to the North coast, easy Access to Stokes Bay with its secret beach and wonderful Rockpool Cafe. Stop at the Parndana wild life Park on the way.
Vivonne Bay, which has been voted Australia's best beach in a survey conducted by Sydney University, offers safe swimming, snorkelling, surfing, and fishing. Nestled between Vivonne Bay and Seal Bay Conservation Parks, Currawong Cottage is a bushwalker's or birdwatcher's paradise. The lovely sandy-bottomed Harriet River is a safe spot for a cool-off, a paddle and a safe splash-about for children. Canoes can be hired locally if you wish to explore further upstream.
Wild Life
Seals and dolphins are regular visitors to the bay, penguins can be seen near the jetty and in winter, you may be lucky enough to see a whale. Wallabies, possums, echidnas and heath goannas may be seen in the coastal reserve and around the beach houses. The beautiful coastal scrub land provides an ever changing display of wild flowers and a haven for birds. Vivonne Bay is an excellent base from which to explore the island, or just chill out, stay put and let the beautiful surroundings work their magic on you.

About the host
Hosted by Heather Burgess

Hi. My name is Heather Burgess I am a physiotherapist, now semi retired. I have lived in Adelaide all my life, much of it in the Adelaide hills. My partner Max and I now live in Athelstone overlooking Black Hill Conservation Park. I have always loved the outdoors and the Australian bush. I am a keen bushwalker and grower of native plants. Max and I generally have a dog in our life and currently we are trying to domesticate a lively staghound puppy called Rupert. We get over to Kangaroo Island as often as we can.
Why they chose this property
I first fell in love with Kangaroo Island on a visit with friends as a Uni student in 1972.
I found Vivonne Bay when I brought my parents and young children over for an Easter visit in the late 80s. Looking for somewhere not too far from the west end attractions
( to avoid the " Are we there yet?" chorus from the back seat) I took a chance and booked a house here.
In 2002 I brought my new maybe partner Max to the Island to test his bushwalking stamina. He passed so I thought I should show him my favourite beach (here of course).
As chance would have it there was a stunning block of land for sale tucked behind the coastal reserve. Max said "buy it and I will build you a house". And he did - the beautiful Currawong Cottage. Not bad for a hairdresser with no building experience. I have kept both of them.
Now my grown up children and my grand children love to come and stay. We have such happy times here with friends and family and we are pleased to think that others can come and enjoy our special place.

What makes this property unique
The mid south coast location is perfect for accessing all of the Island"s attractions. Nothing is too far away for a leisurely day trip. The beach is stunning. Voted Australia's best beach two years running in a Sydney University survey. Currawong Cottage is as close as you can get to the beach. It is cute, private and secluded. Birds and other wild life frequently visit the garden.
Air conditioned for summer and winter comfort with a wood heater for atmosphere and extra cosiness. All up to date kitchen appliances and an old style Victorian bathtub in the main bathroom. A perfect mixture of quirky and convenient with great atmosphere. You can't help but relax and unwind.
