About this property
Southern Ocean Lookout
Southern Ocean Lookout is a modern two storey house, renovated at the end of 2016. It boasts a balcony overlooking magnificent sea views, situated on a natural bushland block. The ground floor of the house has two queen bedrooms overlooking the sea. The third bedroom has a double bed and a set of single bunks with the option of adding two extra kids beds. The open plan lounge and dining upper storey is the hub of the house with a fully equipped kitchen, just BYO food and nothing else! It also has a queen fold out sofa bed.
There are panoramic views from our elevated position in almost every direction. The house looks out over stunning sea views which encompass the most northern part of the Coffin Bay waterway. Enjoy the sunset from the balcony looking over the water (just 400m from the house) to Horse Peninsula and Coffin Bay National Park. The panoramic views also include Mount Dutton and vast areas of native bushland.
Many of our guests have written delighted comments about the view, but this comment from Josh and Rachelle on September 24th 2013 probably says it the most graphically-
"Quite possibly the best view in the state! We have loved every minute of our stay.....Thanks so much for sharing this gorgeous place!"
Claire, Denny, Bailey, Kye and Nash wrote "Wow! what a beautiful spot! The views amazing!..."
The Lookout is in a serene setting on 125 acres of open, original coastal bushland which is roamed by kangaroos and emus and frequented by a wide range of birds, including sea eagles and wedge-tailed eagles. Apart from the owners' adjoining house, your nearest neighbour is more than 200m away and the next 1km! The shores of Salt Creek, which have two small shallow beaches are about 400m down the drive.
Josh and Rachelle- "...The wildlife has been a real treat..."
Ian, Sue and Madi- "We loved the scenery and the native animal display you put on for us every night"
Adam, Clare and JJ- "We enjoyed watching the roos out the front in the afternoon"
Richard, Bryan, Christine- "Loved the kangaroos"
Just 6km away there is Farm Beach, the best family swimming beach in the summer on the southern part of the Eyre Peninsula. You can drive onto this beach, so not only do you do not have to slog on foot to get the family and all that paraphernalia onto the beach, but you also have the choice of any section of this long beach. During summer a concrete and timber ramp provide easy access to the beach even for two wheel drive vehicles.
Along the coast north of the Lookout there are spectacular rugged beaches ideally suited to land based fishing and surfing. The nearby Coffin Bay National Park has a great mix of very calm and surf beaches also.
Mark- "...I suggest to drive to Coles Point and Greenly Beach..."
This is a prized fishing location and we are pleased to offer our guests who have a boat licence the choice between hiring our 4.55 m Polycraft with 50 hp Yamaha electric start and a 4.0 m Quintrex with flat floor and 25 hp Yamaha. If hire of our boat interests you, please enquire at the time of booking to avoid disappointment.
A boat gives a greatly enhanced opportunity to fish this area. Southern Ocean Lookout is favourably positioned for the best land based and boat fishing options on the western side of the Eyre Peninsula. Farm Beach (only 6km from the house) provides direct access to the best fishing grounds avoiding the long run from Coffin Bay. Boats launching from Coffin Bay township must endure choppy seas whipped up by the sea breeze. Access to the more sheltered Coffin Bay waters is simple via the concrete boat ramp, complete with floating pontoon only 3km away at Mount Dutton Bay East.
Denny and gang- "...fishing awesome!"
Brett, Dean, Aaron, Mike, Chris, Wayne- "Loved the view, the fishing, the house and landscape..."
COMFORT AND CONVENIENCE-
The Lookout is a comfortable two storey, well-equipped modern home.
Adam, Clare and JJ- "....extremely well-equipped, comfortable and clean accommodation..."
Mark- "Fantastic house and location...."
Dave and Robyn- "Great place to stay. Excellent views, great facilities...."
Ian, Sue and Madi- "...A real home away from home..."
Claire Denny and family- "....The house was so comfortable and well equipped!...."
Andrew and Linda- "Hey, how good is this place! We had a wonderful time exploring, sightseeing and walking; then to return to such a comfortable and relaxing home- perfect...."
The upper level is truly a lookout, being a single room with views on every side. This room includes the kitchen, dining and lounge areas. and a balcony. It is equipped with evaporative and reverse cycle air conditioning.
IDEALLY POSITIONED FOR DIVERSE HOLIDAY ACTIVITIES-
Our position and the area around it ensures that you will be spoilt for choice for a wide range of special nature-based recreational and sight-seeing activities.
About the Southern Ocean Lookout
We are located close to Mount Dutton Bay West township, on the western coast of the Lower Eyre Peninsula. Port Lincoln is 50 km to the east. The area around the Lookout and Coffin Bay Township is a highly favoured "weekender" destination for people who live in Port Lincoln.
The house was built in 2002 and extensively renovated in 2016 with reverse cycle air-conditioning throughout. The single upstairs room, which was designed to capitalise on the panoramic views. has the well-equipped kitchen, which includes a dishwasher, the dining and main lounge areas and a flat screen TV and DVD player. The balcony is accessed from this room or from the external stair case.
Every attempt is made to meet the needs of guests with small children. There is a child safety gate at the top of the stairs. A high chair and portacot with linen are supplied on request. Plastic cutlery and dishes designed for children are part of the household equipment. The upstairs balcony provides a well enclosed area, but there is no fencing around the house at ground level.
Downstairs, the largest of the three bedrooms faces east and south. This has two bunk beds and a fold-out queen size bed. This room can serve as a TV/video room that is separate from the main living area, as it houses a second smaller flat screen TV and DVD player.
The two smaller bedrooms that look out over the sea view to the west each have queen size beds.
The bathroom has a WC, shower and two hand-basins. A small laundry houses a second WC, a laundry tub (which does great service as a baby bath) and a washing machine.
The Lookout is situated in a natural clearing of the bushland which is favoured grazing for kangaroos and emu families. It is also visited and overflown by a wide range of birds.
The owners live in a house which is set back to the north-east from the Lookout. The two houses are joined by a locked ground floor store room. Both houses have their own driveway and completely separate front doors. The owners' house has no impact on the sea views from the Lookout.
There is a ground level undercover barbecue area with a family size Weber Q and an outdoor setting which overlooks the ocean.
There is ample parking space for a number of vehicles and boats. No need to back your trailer, there is a large turning circle provided.
Getting There and What the Area Around Offers
Qantas and Rex fly to Port Lincoln from Adelaide (35-40 min) several times a day. Pre-booked hire cars can be picked up at the airport.
It is a 700 km drive from Adelaide, via Port Augusta, to the Lookout. Alternatively, the SeaSA car ferry, which runs across the Spencer Gulf at least daily from Wallaroo to Lucky Bay, (just North of Cowell) almost halves the driving distance.
The wild west coast of the Eyre Peninsula that runs north from the Lookout has a series of sandy beaches, rocky cliffs and headlands with almost nobody there. There are virtually no buildings or settlements along this magnificent coast until Elliston, about 120 km away.
The attractive small waterside township of Coffin Bay is about 18 km by road from the Lookout and is the closest centre for a range of services. These include several small shops, a butcher and a hotel which serves meals every day. The sailing and golf clubs serve meals on selected days. Fishing charters and cruises operate out of Coffin Bay and other adventure tours are available.
The Coffin Bay National Park is accessed through the Coffin Bay Township. A relatively small and scenically splendid part of the Park is accessed easily on sealed roads . The remainder of the Park to the west has a diversity of scenery, but can only be reached with 4 wheel drive vehicles.
Port Lincoln is well developed for tourism, with attractions such as swimming with tuna, shark cage diving, fishing or sailing charters, wineries and restaurants. Fishing?-well, many Port Lincoln people tow their boats to launch them at Farm Beach, because of its easily accessed productive fishing grounds. The Port Lincoln National Park has much of interest, but the Coffin Bay Park has more.
