Cozy, private rain forest retreat cottage situated above Kona in the Kaloko Mauka Honua'ula Forest Reserve. Located on a 3-acre property, this cottage is set away in a lush forest of Ohia trees and Hapu'u tree ferns. Enjoy the sweet aroma of ginger surrounding this one bedroom cottage--perfect for a romantic getaway! Escape the heat of the Kona coast and come explore the mauka forest and trails of Kaloko with excellent bird watching at this cool elevation of 2300 feet. We are located 2 miles above the upper Mamalahoa Highway in a rural setting. Only 10 minutes to the airport, town of Kona, and beaches. This cottage has a great back deck for star gazing and enjoying your meal. The living room is furnished with a comfy double recliner, desk, and swivel mounted 43-inch flat screen TV that can also be viewed from the dining area, DVD player, and WiFi/streaming. The kitchen has granite counter tops, equipped with a full-size refrigerator, counter top induction burner, coffee maker, and electric barbecue out back.

It’s very difficult to describe in this short space how special this place is. You feel like you’re in the middle of the rain forest yet you have all the amenities of a five star hotel. I especially love the little make up make up mirror (other VRBO hosts take note! ) Our host could not have been more helpful despite some miscommunication on my part.(thank you for your patience!!) she was helpful at every juncture. This place was a place that I would not hesitate to recommend to anyone that would like to relax, unwind, and just step away from the world for a while. My only regret is that we didn’t have enough time to stay there! Linda & Ron

Absolutely picture perfect stay. Impressively decorated and incredibly comfortable cottage with a lot of quiet and privacy. It's only a partial kitchen, but that being said, it's stocked with so many additional appliances that it's easy to cook something simple for yourself if you need to.

This property is incredible! Even the previous reviews didn’t prepare me for how wonderful this house is. It was exceptionally clean and so very cute inside and out. We were here for my wife’s 50th birthday and it did not disappoint. There’s so much to like about it. The design of the interior and exterior really make this house standout as a piece of paradise. We sat on the porch every night after activities on the island and relaxed while we listened to the sounds of the cloud forest (which, there is conveniently guided tours available 5 minutes down the road at Kona Cloud Forest Sanctuary). The pheasants were adorable and visited us every day for a quick snack before going about their day. One of the days, we decided to travel to the east side of the island and ended up staying the night somewhere else. We could not wait to return to this property. It’s that great. It’s so close to so many things to do on the island whether it’s snorkeling, luaus, breakfast/dinner options or just Walmart. I can’t say enough good things about this property and I’m so very glad we found it. We were so sad to leave after a week.

The cottage and the property are just magical! The climate is quite different at 2,400 ft elevation - nice and cool. The creatures are fun to find - geckos and coqui frogs! The pheasants visit to say hello. Mary is a gracious host.

Everything we expected and more! This was our first of four locations we stayed at on our first trip to Hawaii and it was the best of the lot. It is located in the rain forest so it was quiet and we saw all forms of flowers and wildlife during the day. Then at night we had a spectacular view of a moonless sky full of stars and the coquis sang us to sleep. The front had a seating area with a view of the garden, the bedroom had a patio door to the large deck and additional seating options with another large garden where we could hand-feed the pheasants and there was a third patio door off the living area. All the typical amenities provided including a large TV, games, books, etc plus sunscreen and bug spray. There was plenty of dishes as well as seasonings and the refrigerator was stocked with a variety of condiments. Our host really thought of everything with bathroom products, room fresheners, even binoculars! We definitely would choose this location again!

We loved the house and the details in the decor and lighting, but as other reviewers have stated, the yard and gardens are the show stopper- absolutely beautiful! And as a birder you can’t beat the back porch for bird watching and feeding the pheasants. The kitchen is small but we had everything we needed to make our meals there. You will not find a better accommodation for the price on the island. Don’t miss the Kona cloud forest and the sound meditation journey just up the street- it’s worth the price.

This cottage was so amazing! It was so secluded and surrounded by gorgeous plants and wildlife. Mary was very responsive and helped make our stay incredibly pleasant. It was only about 15 min from the main Kona area and super close to the start of the Kona coffee belt. The place was clean, well stocked and had a lot of outdoor lounging areas for the days we didn’t travel much. There was even a cute little family of pheasants that would visit us every morning. It was such a cool way to enjoy the island, I would highly recommend!

Pictures cannot do the property/cottage justice- this is a spectacular rainforest paradise!
