About this property

The Rivercane Cabin - Weekly disc, cozy, private, view, 1 mile to JCC Folkschool

This IS the cozy little cabin that the imagination conjures whenever "cozy little cabin" is mentioned. This 2/2, 900 sqft log cabin, in the middle of 7 wooded acres, transports you to a simpler time and place to enhance your getaway. Open-raftered ceilings, wide plank flooring and hand made decor, gives the Rivercane an historic mountain feel. This cabin is located just 1.1 mile from the John C Campbell Folkschool and a mere 1/2 mile off Brasstown Rd. It's cozy dead end location is very private without being remote. Nestled into a wooded hilltop setting (just above the valley floor with an altitude of 1820ft), you'll feel hidden from the world, while being able to gaze across a slice of Brasstown Valley from the front porch as well as from the living and dining rooms. Every room has a woodland view, ever-changing as the sun makes its daily trip and the seasons serve up an ever changing palette. The back porch, screened on three sides, projects into the forest as the ground gently slopes away, giving a real "treehouse feel" as you ponder the day ahead, the one just experienced or your place in the universe. It's the perfect home base to either recharge your batteries from your work-a-day world OR regroup your thoughts after a creative day at the Folkschool.

In addition to being a one of a kind magically appointed cabin, you will probably find that the Rivercane has the best weekly rate in the area, making it a popular choice for "Folkschoolers". In our attempt to maximize opportunities for "Folkschoolers", we have implemented a 5-7 day minimum stay, during the three season busy months. If however you see openings of less than a week (4-6 days) and want to book less than the minimum 5 required, please contact me to strategize. Our goal is to schedule weekend to weekend 7-8 days bookings, but if you see smaller openings we are open to shorter stays. We want to maximize opportunities for guests to experience our unique Rivercane Cabin.

To stay connected if you must, there is wi-fi and a smart TV (no cable), wi-fi or device ready, an equipped kitchen, all linens with washer & dryer. Both bedrooms (one queen, one full bed) are ground floor. The outdoor fire pit area has been recently revamped and, so as long as burn conditions are within safe margins, it is available for use. The fireplace allows you to bring that cozy fireside experience indoors in cooler weather.

To unplug if you wish, you never have to step off the property or out of the neighborhood, to see deer, turkey, fox, stars and moonlight. There are outdoor activities aplenty, with trails, rivers and lakes peppering the area. There are restaurants, art events and music in Murphy only 7 miles away. In this picturesque mountain town, you'll also find antique shops along with craft and specialty shops. There is also the Harrah's Casino, that is a few minutes east of downtown Murphy, West Tubing Company 4 1/2 miles away in Warne and The Crown of Brasstown (hilltop finer dining, in the heart of Brasstown). If you find yourself in a medical emergency, Murphy Medical Center, is only 4 miles away, in Peachtree.

Of course the biggest draw in our little Brasstown is the John C. Campbell Folkschool, founded in 1925, which offers over 750 classes a year in 19 studios. It has music, dance and community events that are open to the public. Check out their website to see what might interest you. Also, check out our "Rivercane Cabin Coloring Book" on Amazon. You'll find a complimentary copy in the living room upon arrival.

Finally, be sure not to overload your agenda, because the best part about a mountain getaway is doing nothing at all.

THE Rivercane

Start to finish our stay was everything from relaxing, exciting, to inspiring and rejuvenating! Brasstown is just a few miles from dwntwn Murphy with quaint shops including Rare Bird a coffee shop and unique gift store. Just 5 minutes from this sweet cabin is the John C. Campbell folk school with lots of cool classes available (go online to check schedule) and events open to the public, like the community jam held on Thursday at The Crowne restaurant (delicious) at the top of a hill mear minutes from THE Rivercane. While you are visiting downtown Murphy, be sure to stop at the visitor center. They are so kind, have public restrooms and will give you lots of information about the area. There is a riverwalk around the town. That is a very nice place to enjoy an afternoon walk. There are lots of places to hike nearby, including some cool waterfalls, be sure to visit Brasstown Bald, which is the highest point in Georgia. It’s just over the border! There are lots of things to do in this friendly little town. But our favorite thing to do is to hang out at THE Rivercane. Enjoy the screened porch. Take a walk on the treehouse trail, read a book with a cup of tea, sip a glass of wine or enjoy a rosemary honey old fashioned by the firepit. 🥃Put your phone away, look at each other and have a CONVERSATION.Get CREATIVE! You will be inspired by all of the beautiful handmade pieces contained in this little gem you will call your clean, comfortable home away from home.

Peaceful beautiful retreat

My dad and I stayed at the cabin while taking a Folk School class and it was ideal! From the breathtaking location to the cozy interior, it is a perfect place for a retreat to recharge and learn something new. We would love to stay here again.

Absolutely perfect!!

The cabin was more than I imagined. It had everything at our fingertips. There was nothing left out. My only regret was that I was in class all day and didn't get to enjoy the cabin during the day. I hope to return in a few months and stay again so that I can enjoy the location and all the benefits the cabin has to offer. Thank you, Roger, for providing such a wonderful stay.

Like staying at a good friend's house!

I can't say enough good things about my experience. As soon as I booked, the owner sent me detailed instructions and directions. This included a map of a trail on the property and the layout of the cabin. Unlike most rentals, the details included things like: extra toilet paper is in the cabinet. The cabin itself is adorable and obviously well-loved by the owners. The back porch is perfect for relaxing after a long day at the Folk School. I can't wait until I get to stay here again.

We had a fabulous week

The cabin is lovely. The property is beautiful with a walking path, very nice fire ring and screened porch. It really is as good as it looks in the pictures. We had a power outage after an overnight storm and the host was amazing with making sure we were comfortable. He even went out of his way to make sure we knew where to find coffee in Murphy that morning. Thank you!! The driveway is steep and windy in some places, so make sure you are comfortable with that kind of driving. The location was perfect for a week at the folk school just down the road.

Another great stay at Rivercane Cabin for a week in a Folk School class

This was my second stay at this cozy, art-filled cabin. My sister and I stayed there in November, and I was happy to have an opportunity to return so soon. The winter views of the horizon are so pretty. I don't think I missed a sunrise the whole week. The only problem with staying there when you're taking a Folk School class is that you don't get enough time to enjoy the cabin! The studio space is a real gem, as is the back porch. But I found myself on the front porch more this time because it has the long view. The back, screened porch is a delight because you're ensconced in the trees. Roger, the owner, does a wonderful job of staying on top of any messages. He made my sister and me feel so welcomed when we stayed there in November—so much so that I felt he was an old friend when I booked this time.I found out last time that the full bed suits me better because the more-firm beds (like the queen one in the cabin) are hard on my replaced knees. It's nice to have choices. And it's nice to have two bathrooms to choose from as well.I cooked my dinners at the cabin and had lunches at the Folk School. The dining room has a wonderful view. I watched the sunrise each day while having a morning cup of tea. This is my favorite cabin of any I've stayed in over the years. It has a lovely "personality" and you can tell the owners have put a lot of care into it. I can't recommend it enough and am looking forward to my next visit!

Winter home

Stayed at the cabin for a week while attending Folk School classes. Extremely cold weather all week, but cabin was warm and toasty the whole time. Beautiful, comfortable, inviting interior. Owner helped me find the place, guided me up the road to the cabin when I arrived, and suggested alternative parking in case of icy conditions. Great experience - hope to return some day.

Mountain Christmas

This stay will surely rank among our top 10 Christmas vacations if not THE top! The Rivercane cabin already lends itself to a magical experience as soon you lay eyes on her, but we added some Christmas spirit with a few lights and minimal decorations added to the treasures already there. We believe Santa & Mrs. Claus🤶 along with their elves would approve. The Rivercane is always spic n’ span and guests will enjoy the indoor fireplace, outdoor fire pit, screened porch (surrounded by woods and a plethora of wildlife). There are lots of quaint little mountain towns to visit nearby, including the quaint mountain town of Murphy, which is just a few minutes away, a wonderful, fine dining restaurant called The Crown, and you can purchase fresh beef right from the farmer at Brasstown Beef only 10 minutes down the road. The communication is 5 star too! Whenever we leave Rivercane, we are already planning our return… But you don’t have to wait till Christmas. The Rivercane has Christmas in its heart all year long

Lovely cabin to rest and inspire

We stayed at Rivercane Cabin during the Winter session at John C Campbell Folk School, which is located just five minutes away. Every wall in the cabin has examples of beautiful work from projects that can be made at the school as well as original work by the owners. We were warm and comfortable, and enjoyed the peace and beauty of the site.

The perfect cabin

We absolutely loved the Rivercane cabin. It was cozy and beautifully decorated with artistic touches. The back porch was nestled in the trees with a family of deer that visited regularly. Very convenient to both the quaint town of Murphy and the John C Campbell Folkschool

As expected from the listing, we loved it!

My sister and I stayed here while attending John C. Campbell Folk School. We found everything to be as expected by the listing, except that the art in the cabin enthralled us more than anticipated! The communication with owner was excellent, he even checked in with us when he thought the power might be out (it wasn't). Breakfast watching the deer was magical. On our week there it was a bit chilly for the porches, but we could imagine really enjoying them in warmer weather. All in all it was a cozy, lovely retreat!

Flat-lander will drive again

Lovely hilltop log cabin with great attention to architectural detail and artsy, rustic decor. The back porch is amazing. As a Prius-driving flat-lander, the access is important to me. We drove a truck, but my Prius would have probably worked better. Access road is wide enough for 2 cars to pass until switchback at the top of the hill where it is paved, but you can backup into a neighboring driveway or pull over a spot or two into dirt if dry. It poured down rain a couple of times, but that was no issue on the road, which is gravel most of the way.

Love the Rivercane Cabin

My wife and I stayed at The Rivercane Cabin in April 2024. Roger was a terrific host, communicative and caring, plus a wealth of knowledge. Here are a few thoughts on the cabin: Felt at home right away Comfortable and well equipped Beautiful setting on the top of the mountain but with substantial flat areas which is somewhat rare Very tastefully decorated with some fun whimsy thrown in To me it's waht a cabin in the mountains should be like...cozy, comfortable, well crafted with design elements like the stacked stone steps, stone fireplace, timber framed rear porch, natural railings ,etc. We will be back for sure. - Bill & Trish

About the host

Hosted by Wallace Fingar

Host profile image
I am Roger, an almost retired painting and decorating contractor, based out of Tampa for over 40 years. Architectural creativity has always been an avocation for me. I've dabbled in timber framing, treehouse building, live edge construction, stonework and my own brand of custom wood finishing. My lovely wife, Lynda, is a retired art teacher, who continually explores new methods of artistic expression in both familiar and unfamiliar media. For both of us our greatest joy is creative expression in our complementary arenas of interest. Occasionally we've been known to collaborate a project, however scarcely a day goes by when we don't consult each other about some aspect of a project, either helping with a creative pathway or with some problem solving issue. It helps that we respect each other's opinion more than anyone else's.

Why they chose this property

We selected this property for many reasons. We bought it sight unseen (from marketing photos) and were not disappointed. It's location was a big attraction for us. It's only a mile away form the John C. Campbell Folkschool which has a deep connection for us both. It's proximity to other property we own, made in convenient as a "beachhead" for future building projects, both ground attached and in the trees. The modest size of the cabin is a perfect reminder that our North Carolina life should be a somewhat simplified one - at least not a duplication of the complex lifestyle we have in our Florida life. It's by no means a "Tiny House". We call it a "Not so tiny house" - small but livable, with every square foot having a purpose.
It was built by a retired doctor from Colorado and his wife, who taught at the Folkschool for several decades.

What makes this property unique

The location, the view, the Folkschool proximity and the feel of the cabin itself, have been a magical experience for us and our guests, in the short year since we purchased the Rivercane. It's a privilege to share this wonderful place with others so it can become their experience, too. From the "nestled in the woods" environment (in the middle of seven wooded acres) to the artistic vibe of the neighborhood, being there has truly been a gift to us!
