About this property

The Top Floor Cantref House is a spacious apartment in the Brecon Beacons

The very spacious (4 Star graded by Visit Wales) Top Floor is part of a large family home but is completely self contained which benefits from its own entrance, accessed via an outdoor staircase. It is brightly decorated with a quirky feel. Great views of the Brecon Beacons from the lounge, bedroom and balcony. There is an information/Reading room which has a telescope - for our Dark Sky Reserve, leaflets, maps and books on the local area with views looking across to the Black Mountains. There is also a Bat Detector for watching the bats come and go from the nearby Church.

Off the main entrance from the kitchen there is an outdoor balcony area with seating and table available for eating alfresco or just relaxing. On arrival there is tea, coffee, milk and a small loaf of bread included. Bed Linen, towels, kitchen necessities, toiletries and toilet rolls are all provided. Parking is on the drive at the front of the house just at the foot of the staircase.
Cantref is a peaceful parish of scattered farms and houses. Walking from the doorstep is in abundance to suit all levels - be it walking to the top of the highest point of the Brecon Beacons which is Pen y fan or more or less level walk into Brecon via the canal towpath. Lots of circular walks around the lanes too.

Brecon enjoys several festivals during the year, Brecon Jazz, Brecon Choir festival, Brecon Baroque festival. We are fortunate to have a cinema in Brecon as well as Theatre Brycheiniog which hosts a great variety of entertainments from Ballet to Opera or Drama to Comedy. Also, live screening from eg The National Theatre, London. The cathedral too hosts lunchtime concerts etc. Remember to that we are in a Dark Sky Reserve.

We try and meet our guests on arrival but afterwards you are left in peace! However, we are on hand should there be any queries, problems or help with any walks, cycle routes, scenic drives, places to eat etc.

Weekend Break
Lovely base for our weekend. Lots of special caring touches from Shiela that were appreciated. Bathroom warm with excellent shower. Lots of room in spacious accommodation. Walked from the front door up into the Brecon beacons. Highly recommend.

Quiet weekend break
Superbly presented property which was perfect for our short break. Sheila provided many personal touches from fresh flowers to homemade Welsh cakes which were delicious. We really felt like we were staying in someone’s much loved home. There’s not much around so a car is essential and the steps up to the 2nd floor apartment could be challenging if your mobility is at all limited.

Brecon stay
Everything was easy. Nice location, just follow Shelias directions else you will have fun going down some very narrow lanes

Host profile image
I have lived in the area all of my life, Cantref House has been in my family for 5 generations. I like to think that I have a good knowledge of the area. I enjoy travelling myself and meeting guests here too. We have a well stocked garden including a walled area. I enjoy both tending to the flowers and growing vegetables but please don't expect a pristine garden as its not! Its certainly very organic though.

Why they chose this property

Its just always been my home - and I love it. I love the peace and quiet, the beautiful unspoiled surrounding countryside. Although we are in the heart of the countryside we are only 4 miles from the town of Brecon.

What makes this property unique

Cantref House is located in a rural peaceful area with lots of walks of all levels from the doorstep. You can reach Pen y fan from the doorstep too. The National cycle route - the Taff Trail is just a mile away. Horse riding is available a 5 minute walk away. There are many Scenic Drives in the area.
