For lovers of walking, wildlife and incredible scenery, this welcoming shepherd’s hut offers a solo adventure or couple’s escape in the peace and quiet of this idyllic part of the Lake District National Park. The hut is located in the foothills of the impressive Skiddaw mountain – with a direct path from the farm – and its elevated position ensures incredible views over Bassenthwaite Lake, 3 miles away. Dodd Wood, with its network of walking trails, is 2.5 miles, and Derwentwater, where you can take a boat trip or walk the 10-mile loop around the lakeshore, is 6 miles. The pretty market town of Keswick is just a few minutes from Derwenter, and boasts shops, a twice-weekly market, places to eat and interesting museums. The handsome Georgian town of Cockermouth, home to a buzzy arts scene as well as more shops, cafes and restaurants, is 9 miles away.
As you approach the hut, take a moment to appreciate the incredible views over the fields towards the lake and fells. Climb five steps to the door and enter the warm and inviting interior, which is laid out studio-style, with the double bed across the far wall to your right, with storage beneath and a Freeview TV opposite for comfortable lounging after a day in the great outdoors. Timber panelling and soft colours complement the hut’s natural surroundings, and on warm days you can open the top half of the stable door and enjoy a fresh breeze. Satisfy hunger pangs with a hearty meal created in the kitchenette – you’ll have a fridge, small electric hob, combination oven/microwave and an air fryer, plus a ceramic sink for washing up. Dine at the bar-style table by the window, taking in the blissful views. Completing this charming accommodation is a shower room, set at the opposite side of the hut to the bed, with a proper, hot shower and flushing WC.
In good weather you’ll want to spend as much time as possible outside, and your hut boasts an enclosed, gravelled garden with a picnic bench for al fresco drinks or meals. Alternatively, light up the fire pit and toast something tasty as you enjoy the glorious sunsets, listening for owls and watching the stars come out. A private parking space is also included for your benefit.
