About this property
Secluded Cottage with Stunning Ocean Views
Privately situated at the end of a winding wooded lane, The Cottage is nestled at the edge of a 115 acre wooded setting, along the granite ledges of Spruce Harbor. Floor to ceiling multi-paned windows adorn the south side of the home, opening to expansive ocean views. Skylights shimmer light throughout this open and airy post and beam cottage. The rustic decor and simplicity of design provide a soothing and relaxing ambiance. A corner wood stove warms the surrounding living room and kitchen, and flows to the upstairs loft, housing two sleeping areas (a queen size bed to one side, two twins to the other) separated by pull-across divider. A wrap around deck opens off the kitchen. Sit by the shade of the over-hanging branches of spruce trees, or bask in the warm sun and soft ocean breezes. Enjoy the array of sea vessels that pass through Merchants Row, once a busy seafaring lane, now quieter with passing sail boats and lobster fishermen bringing in their days' catch. Private and secluded, enjoy nature at its best. Conveniently located to Stonington Village and picturesque Stonington Harbor. Just a short drive to shops, restaurants, galleries, theater, and more!
We also have another property available for rentals located just down the trail (3 minute walk!), sleeps 8 and also has gorgeous ocean views. The listing # is 1135945. Great to rent both properties together if you have a large group of friends or family!

We have stayed in many different rental properties over the years. This was by far one of the coolest places we have ever stayed. This could be one of our favorite trip's and the cottage did not disappoint.

Tony, we are so touched that you had such a memorable experience. We hope to welcome you back sometime soon!
Had a great stay at this cottage near Stonington. Just a beautiful piece of property with the most amazing views of the merchant islands. The cabin itself was super cozy and had everything we needed for a wonderful week in Maine. Cabin owner was easy to communicate with and work with. Great place and will be back!

A-ma-zing! Cozy, charming, perfect for a romantic get away. The land, beaches, views, and cottage are absolutely perfect. Deer Isle is beautiful. Thank you Jessica for sharing your special place with us. It was idyllic and we can’t wait to come back!!

Thank you, Lisa. We are so happy you enjoyed your stay and would love to welcome you back sometime.
We had a wonderful time at this charming and rustic cottage located right on the Maine coastline. Very clean and well-appointed cottage. Everything is as advertised and in photos. Excellent communications with the hosts. Beautiful views and a short stroll to the water for coastal exploring. We stayed in early October with cold nighttime temps, and the wood stove kept the cottage comfortably warm. The artwork and assorted knick-knacks make for a fun space and the record player and vinyl collection made for some fun evenings. We will be coming back here again one day.

What a perfect cottage! We absolutely loved our stay and hope to be back again. We enjoyed every aspect of the stay from the initial communication and response time to the end of our vacation. The only downside was having to leave. :)
Cottage was rustic, clean and well equipped. Host was wonderful with responses. Waterfront was amazing, despite the rain. Know that the ladder to bedroom may not be the best setup for older (me) folks, but the view was well worth the effort.

Beautiful cottage, great location, spectacular sunsets and so much more. We totally enjoyed our week at The Cottage. Lot of great hikes around (Barred Island, Isle au Haut, the Quarry and other Preserves). Visits to Stonington, Castine. Thank you Jessica. I already miss having my morning coffee on the deck facing the sea…

Thank you, Joanne! So happy you enjoyed yourselves so much. We would love to welcome you back.
It was a privilege to stay in this well-loved, beautifully appointed, family cabin. The host is incredibly responsive, the property is well kept and thoughtfully furnished. It is the nicest cabin I’ve rented anywhere. The location is perfect. Access to the loft sleeping area is by a sturdy ladder - so not for everyone.. You know, there are many nice cabins on Deer Isle and I secretly hope you’ll look at them so I can continue to return to this one! 😉

Probably the nicest place to paddle home to on the whole island. The Cottage is perfect in size feel and location. If what you see it in the photos captures your imagination it's actually 100x better when you are there. This little house is magic, and the setting is unbelievably beautiful. I can't think of a nicer place to escape to and feel lucky to have been there.

Thank you, Lloyd, for appreciating and enjoying our slice of paradise as much as our family does. Thank you for passing along our listing to your friends so that they may experience it as well. We look forward to welcoming you and your kids back in the future!
We had a lovely time at this cottage. It provided exactly what we were looking for - a relaxing, peaceful getaway from everything. Even though the weather was overcast, we enjoyed the warmth of the fire in the woodstove (it’s more like a fireplace than I had originally thought) and the amazing views of the forest and harbor. We enjoyed our daily walks along the bath along the coast - and even saw a group of harbor seals (I counted 15 using the binoculars from the cottage) on a rock visible from the dock. The cottage and views are even better in person.

Thank you so much for the kind review. Would love to welcome you back again!
We absolutely loved our stay at the cottage! The location and views are incredible. The place is so well designed, great for a couple or overflow guest while staying at the main house. Just step outside and you could spend hours exploring the terrain. The deck is a great location to have pre-dinner cocktails or watch nature. We heard loons and cormorants and saw deer walking by. I had some work to do and the WiFi connection was great and I played records while I worked. Jessica was incredibly responsive and had some great suggestions for things to do. We will be back!

You drive down the dirt lane for a while, then over the massive glacial rock, seemingly going on forever and then you see the cottage waiting for you, greeting you in the quiet woods. The anticipation is worth it!
What a wonderful and magical piece of the planet this cottage sits upon! Plenty of privacy and the views are magnificent. Relaxing on the deck, relaxing on the rocks below and napping on the couch to wake up to the view is so peaceful. Down by the dock you might see a seal chasing the fish as well as the eagles and osprey doing the same. Or perhaps the deer will stop by for a nibble of grass. This is a nature lovers paradise as is the whole island. Thank you to the owners for being willing to share their piece of heaven with the world:)

Hi Angela - your review makes me wish I was there right now (more than normal!). We are so happy you enjoyed our piece of heaven as much as we do. Come back soon!
My husband and I absolutely loved our time at the cottage. The location was amazing! It was everything we could have hoped for and more. While rustic, it is exactly what a Maine coastal cottage should be. The cottage is outfitted with everything you could want and/or need. Sitting on the deck at sunset was pure bliss. My communication with Jessica was perfect. She was fast to respond and clear on all the things we needed to know about the cottage and check-in. We've rented many properties through VRBO and Jessica was by far the best communicator. We're already planning our trip for next year! Thank you Jessica for sharing the cottage!
The cottage is artistic, rustic, well-equipped, and totally charming! Windows overlook ocean and woods.Whether inside or out, one appreciates beauty and experiences calm!
Why this property may be for you: Charming, very clean, quiet, beautiful peaceful setting, nice deck, nice kayaking if you have a kayak, Jessica is very friendly and responsive.; she answered all my questions regarding COVID protocol.
Why this property may not be for you: rustic digs, drive down a long dirt road may not be for all cars, ladder to loft may not be for every body. Internet/ phone reception is spotty to nonexistent... which could be a pro or a con depending on what you are looking for!

Hi Kathryn, thank you for visiting the Cottage and for the review! We determined that the WiFi outage during your stay was caused by a lightning strike on the power line and were able to resolve it with the service provider. We do apologize for the inconvenience this caused, but glad you saw the silver lining in being able to disconnect on your vacation. You're right that the ladder is rather steep and may not be for everyone, we encourage everyone to review the photos to make sure it wouldn't be an issue prior to booking. We look forward to welcoming you again in the future!
Our second time returning to this magical cabin. We had such a wonderful time here and we highly recommend to other guests. The cabin had everything we needed & was meticulously clean. One of our favorite rental experiences and we are already planning our next visit! Thank you Jessica and family.

We are so glad you returned to The Cottage and had such a wonderful stay! We would love to welcome you back anytime.
The property was listed very honestly. All the info provided was accurate. It did not convey the excellent care provided by Jessica all through out our visit.
She was only a text away and responded immediately to all our texts. She followed through when the area lost power from a car accident, she had more information than we found out locally.
She gave us so many ideas of things to do in the area.
The private setting and ocean views were so inspiring, we made sure we were home for lunch every day to take advantage
The family has multi generational ties to the area and their love is evident in the upkeep of their retreat.
We were so honored to be a part of the area for a short time.
The Cottage is an attractive cozy
place with a comfortable living room and a lovely view. The kitchen is small but adequate and the deck gets the water breeze. It’s fine for a couple. The queen bed is in a loft well cooled by large windows and ceiling fan, accessible by a securely wide ladder. The only problem is a lack of cellular signal and WiFi most of the time, which seems like an island wide problem. However, the dish TV works well!
Perfect spot for kayaking the Stonington archipelago
Rustic yet artsy cabin in the woods with cozy sleeping loft for 4 (one queen, two twins). Basic kitchen gets the job done. Smallish bathroom, but with full tub/shower. Great view of the ocean from both the cottage and its attached deck. Perfect spot for launching kayaks, just have to carry kayaks about 50 yards down to the water's edge. Great dock and Maine coast granite ledges for both swimming, watching the sunset, reading, or whatever. Lots of trees perfect for hanging a small napping hammock by the sea breezes. Very private -- feels like your own little piece of the Maine Coast. Pristine surrounding spruce woods with lots of trails for exploring.

About the host
Hosted by Jessica Shanklin
Our family has been coming to Spruce Harbor on Deer Isle, Maine since the early 1900s but we didn't build our own houses until the 1960s which is when the Main House was completed. The Cottage was built up the road in the 1990s. Both were built by our family, with the help from dear friends. We have spent many summers boating, exploring, swimming, cooking, kayaking, and just sitting in awe wondering how a place so magnificent has been a huge part of our lives and who we are. The exquisite beauty and fresh air have been enjoyed by many generations, and we don't plan to stop any time soon! We hope you enjoy our piece of heaven on earth.
What makes this property unique
The views never get old! Extremely remote and private, yet a short drive into Stonington. The perfect place to recharge your batteries and experience the best of what Mother Nature has to offer.
