This is a large, rustic cabin, more than we needed as a family of 5, but nice to have the space to spread out. If you are looking for luxury, look elsewhere. But if you want a secluded spot with one of the best views on Earth, I’d highly recommend Richard’s place. I enjoyed the balcony hammock each morning with my coffee. And each morning, a flock of screeching green parrots flew by. The family also enjoyed hiking around the 8 acres. There is creek access, and a local brewery is just a short ten minute walk from here. This is a wonderful place to just “be.” If we return to Costa Rica, this will be at the top of our list of places to stay. Just a few things to consider: Richard is a character. Very friendly, knowledgeable, and communicative. Also, although the kitchen has pots, pans, dishes, and cooking implements, it lacks oil, spices, etc. Be sure to pick those up in town on the way in. Did I mention the view? You can see the Gulf of Nicoya on a clear day!
This property has amazing views, but the property is old and not very well maintained. The lights had spider webs/bugs and even a spider popped out of the couch to pay us a visit. There were also a family living in the adjacent shed that the property owners failed to mention so at night you could actually hear them talking. This made us a little nervous. Also, when we arrived the landscaper proceeded to weed eat around the property for an hour to cut the high grass (apparently there are coral snakes!). The noise was not a great way to greet us. Although it was an interesting experience, I would not stay at this house again. Some work on the house could make this place an amazing spot, but not at the moment.
Great Value, Think Neglected Cabin, Deck is Awesome,
Kitchen is well equipped, lots to explore on the property, but with rain most of the time we were there we didn't get to it. All the double beds are full size beds not queens. The host Roger was great to show us around, explain the tricky showers, and make us feel at home. We didn't use the washer/dryer but there was detergent there to use. My daughter claimed the loft as her bedroom, but a spider the size of cracker scared her away. The telescope on the deck was great. This is not luxury, but it is a great value for a large group.
This is our second time to stay here. The first was several years ago. We enjoyed our stay and it had everything we needed. The host was available to answer questions. He gave us restaurant recommendations, hiking, and other activity reservations. He offered to help book reservations for us also. Beds were comfortable. Kitchen had everything needed.

Live in Florida but feel blessed to spend time in my Costa Rica Retreat! I am 84 years old, former kindergarten teacher and now I enjoy sitting in my enclosed porch sipping good coffee and watching agouti, hummingbirds of several types, small gray foxes, coatimundis, variegated squirrels and so many different kinds of birds and butterflies that come to my back garden. I use my binoculars to see birds that have landed further away. I have seen the grison in my back garden! Unusual! Flocks of oropendola, 3 squirrel cuckoos roosting for the night. I hear the calls but seldom spot the large bellbird, that has 3 wattles or the manakin, altho I have witnessed the mating dance of the manakin. I have been coming to CR nearly every near since 1987 - Love it and the people here! I have rafted the Serepiqui River and fell in; driven the scary roads, volunteered for the Monteverde Conservation League and walked in the Childrens' International Cloud Forest. I feel the need to share this amazing property with others who love and respect nature.
Why they chose this property
I am a tree-hugger and had only the least amount of trees cut for my cottage to be built among the trees. There is a concert of bird songs early in the morning! A small stream runs along one boundary of my 7 acres and there is a path through the woods to it. I hear that there are several waterfalls on it. I have great neighbors and feel safe here. There are several varieties of guava trees, and so many others that have blooms, berries and fruit that animals and birds love. My son, Richard, built the 2-story house in 1999 and has recently remodeled it. He is the current property manager and he lives on the same property. I hear that he does a fantastic job!
