About this property
Beautiful Seaside Cottage with Expansive Ocean Views
This lovely oceanfront home boasts a stunning and expansive view of Penobscot Bay. The ocean side of the house is lined with windows and french doors open to the spacious deck--perfect for grilling, relaxing and taking in the view. Wake up and fall asleep with the sound of the ocean and the smell of the salt air. Wonderful wooded walking trails out the back door and a private clay tennis court within walking distance complete the experience. The house has a wood stove and 2 zones of heating - for chillier weather in late fall, winter and early spring. This home is open, sunny and comfortable with water views from every room and wide pine floors throughout.
There is a half bath downstairs and three bedrooms and a full bathroom (with claw foot tub and separate shower) upstairs. The master bedroom has wonderful views, a full closet and queen bed. The guest room has a double bed, full closet and a water view, and the 'kids' room has two single beds and an amazing birds eye view of the water. This house combines casual elegance with charm for the perfect getaway. The house is pet friendly (great trails for dog walking), though we may require a deposit depending on your dog(s). Fully equip kitchen for those who like cooking. If you prefer to eat out, lots of terrific restaurants in Rockland area (20 mins away).
We have recently built another cottage next door which is often occupied by our family and occasionally rented. This land has been in my family for generations, we have brought our kids here for holidays and summers, they are growing up and we built the new cottage in anticipation of the next generation!

Beautiful, comfortable, well-equipped cottage in an amazing location. Check in and communication with Merritt was very easy, excellent host! We loved our stay, perfect way to celebrate the New Year.
We enjoyed spectacular views and gorgeous weather. It was a great friends reunion week. Many local shops and restaurants were already closed for the season or only open on the weekend. We’d advise getting your groceries for the week before you get to the cottage.
The cottage is perfect - comfy, clean and drop-dead views from windows all around. Best stay I've had on VRBO. Merritt was easy to communicate with - kind and helpful. We plan to stay again and we cannot wait!
As appealing as the home looks online, in person we found it even better. A prefect setting; exactly what we were seeking as a destination to celebrate our 30th anniversary
We were so pleased to be able to stay at Merritt’s charming cottage again. Even in the bleak midwinter we loved every minute! It was cozy & warm, comfortable & peaceful. We love it here.
We could not have found a more perfect place. The location, the views, and the house were all perfect! We can not wait to be able to come back and stay longer when we return. Thank you, Merritt, for being such a great host.
We had a wonderful week at Merritt’s cottage (and our dog had the best vacation ever)! The cottage is cozy, nicely decorated, and larger than it looks in the photos. The views are absolutely fantastic! We normally don’t stay in the same place twice, but plan on making an exception for this house and can’t wait to return!
The property was as described, and the owner was very helpful/knowledgeable. Totally enjoyed the view and ability to listen to the waves. So many things to do in that area or just sit on the deck. It is very quiet, and the lobster boats are fascinating. Merritt could not have been nicer, and we hope to make a return trip next year. Thanks Merritt!
The cottage sits on a bluff with an amazing view of the ocean that can be enjoyed from every room in the house.
The walking trails surrounding the property were amazing and well maintained.
The well equipped cottage isn’t large but there is a feeling of spaciousness.
Merritt, the host, was very helpful and responsive.
The property was beautiful. When the weather permitted, the view was outstanding. It was quiet, and extremely restful. A little bit of a drive to get somewhere, but we didn't want to get anywhere. There were local restaurants that were great with just a little drive. And Rockland supermarkets were just fine. We would highly recommend.
My wife and I booked this house for our honeymoon trip. This house couldn’t have been a better choice to stay at. The ocean views from the house and deck are surreal and breathtaking. The house was very clean and had all the kitchen equipment we needed. We truly enjoyed our stay and found it to be the perfect midpoint to explore all the nearby towns. Merritt was such an awesome and nice host, we will definitely return to this house when we come to Maine again as long as it’s not already booked. We were definitely sad to leave once our trip was over.
This house is one of a kind! I don’t think I will ever come across a stay with views of the ocean and total privacy like this one. The house is spacious and clean with a very well equipped kitchen. The deck is expansive and the place to be at any time of day. Even though our visit was during the off season, there was plenty to do and good places to eat! Without a doubt, I would love to come back and stay here again! 😊
My husband and I enjoyed a very relaxing stay at this charming cottage. The views of the ocean are spectacular from both inside the home and out on the deck, truly breathtaking. We were even lucky to view the Northern Lights on one evening. The home feels spacious yet cozy, and the kitchen is well equipped. In addition to panoramic ocean views, the deck is a great place to view birds and other wildlife; we saw loons, osprey, bald eagles and a harbor seal to name a few. There are nearby walking trails through the woods to enjoy as well. The location is peaceful and secluded. Our host, Merritt, was very welcoming, helpful and responsive. We're so pleased to have found this gem of a home and hope to return in the future.
We just returned from a fantastic week at this beautiful property. The house is lovely - comfortable and attractive furniture, great bed, well-stocked kitchen, and the view is unparalleled. We spent hours on the deck reading, birdwatching, and just relaxing. Even when we had remote work to do, the WIFI was excellent. Unlike the many other places we've stayed, we did have to go out for some basic supplies (sponge, paper towels, tissues, etc.), but that is just a minor detail that you can prepare for in advance. Great walking trails to explore with our pup just off the property and that area of the coastline is spectacular. We returned to the Farnsworth Museum in Rockland, which we always enjoy and purchased great crab and fish from the local fish market as well as lobster from the Tenants Harbor Lobster Coop. Merritt is an outstanding host and a wonderful person. She did everything possible to make us feel comfortable and was extremely reachable when needed. You will love this house. We hope to return!
We had a relaxing stay at Merritt’s ocean side cottage. Plenty of room for us and our children. The woodstove was one of our favorite things about the place. Top of the list was the sounds of waves crashing and the paths through the woods that smell like Christmas.
A couple things to keep in mind that we wished we knew ahead of time.
We booked the place for the solitude! That being said make sure you stock up on groceries, toilet paper, and garbage bags!
The hot water is a bit tricky and the water is brown but completely fine for use but the color might be alarming at first.
The bathroom upstairs has a pocket door which doesn’t shut all the way leaving you with no feeling of privacy. Again, not a big deal with our little family but might be with a mixed group.
Every house has little quirks but the overall experience makes you overlook them. Nothing that you can’t live with. We loved the memories we made here.
If you are looking for nearly complete detachment - a chance to cleanse your mind - this is an ideal rental. Spectacular location positioned between the harbor (nearly open ocean at this point) and coastal pine forest. You cannot get closer to the water with this lovely cottage. Well appointed for our basic needs with clean towels, crisp linens, tp, Myers Clean Day soap in kitchen and baths, a coffee pot (dual k-cup/carafe), toaster, stove, microwave and wi-fi. Had to break out the fans one day (hottest in a decade in Maine), but generally cool with shaded forest paths to walk and ocean breezes. You will hear the lapping of the waves against the rocks and see a variety of bird and animal life (shore birds and forest - we saw bald eagles, a wild turkey, and deer). Not the getaway for everyone - you'll have a bit of a drive for restaurants or markets - but if you are looking for some peace and solitude, this is the place. Well designed interior space. Beautiful light filled rooms. Pet friendly - it was great to have our dogs with us and they loved the views, scents and sounds as much as we did. Maine coastal forest trails. We will be back. Just wish it was a little closer to us, but it was well worth a nine-hour drive. Only some minor notes for improvement: Deck in places and deck furniture may need a redo very soon (deck floor wearing away in places). I can't imagine it is easy to keep up with the impact of the ocean. But minor issues. Wholly recommend.
Wonderful cottage. Simple clean tasteful interior. A little out-of-the way. But if you are looking for a quiet peaceful stay, with a great view of the Atlantic ocean, this is it.
We couldn't have asked for a more beautiful place to celebrate our 50th. Every day we saw eagles perched on the trees nearby or swooping over the water fishing. We saw loons and heard their calls. We watched lobster boats coming and going and had views of two lighthouses--all from the deck. We (and our dog!) thoroughly enjoyed the trails through the woods above the house. The house has a spacious, open design with ocean views from every room and from the large deck. We ate in all week so we appreciated the well-equipped kitchen. All in all we had a wonderfully relaxing week and plan to visit again.

About the host
Hosted by Chris Jones & Merritt Carey
My family has been coming to Tenants Harbor for 5 generations, returning each summer. I grew up with my cousins and other family members on the water, on the rocks and enjoying all Maine's rocky coast has to offer. With my husband Chris and my three children we continue to enjoy all this rocky and wooded coast has to offer. I'm a "recovering" lawyer and have spent my life on the water - sailing in the second women's round the world ocean race and the first women's America's Cup team. Recently I have gotten back into my childhood passion of horseback riding and we have a small horse barn with several horses we keep. Our three kids enjoy the property in different ways, my son loves fishing for stripper off the rocks, my middle daughter loves sailing and island;and hopping and my youngest enjoys riding with me and taking our two dogs on the trails.
Why they chose this property
This property offers you a window to Maine's wonderful coast. In summer and early fall, you'll see lobster fishermen hauling their traps right in front of the house. You'll sleep listening to the sound of the sea and wake to the small of the salt air. If the wind is right, you'll hear the peaceful sound of the bell buoy off of Southern Island (owned by famed painter Andrew Wyeth's family) chiming gently, a reminder of times past when sailors and seamen listed for bell buoys to warn them of land in for. Foggy days will bring you quiet reading and relaxing time, or allow for a trip to nearby Rockland (home to the famed Farnsworth museum, amazing eateries and other galleries) or Camden. There are terrific walking trails right from the house, tennis courts, dock for swimming. In the winter, snow shoeing, skiing at the Camden Snowbowl or watching the weather on the ocean from in front of the cozy wood stove all make for a wonderful time.
