About this property
Secluded villa with unshared pool (Jun-Sep) surrounded by an acre of olive trees
The villa is set in the heart of the Salento countryside, a wonderfully rustic and timeless part of Puglia in the deep south of Italy. It is extremely well-appointed, with modern facilities throughout and a huge terrace surrounding the entire property, ideal for eating, relaxing and sunbathing. The villa has been insulated to keep it pleasantly cool even during the hottest months, but there is also free air-con in the bedrooms and ceiling fans throughout. There are two double bedrooms, 2 shower rooms (one en-suite), free wi-fi, and a family-sized kitchen with dishwasher and washing machine. The living area has a TV with a large library of recent films plus Amazon Prime Video, and a sofa bed providing extra sleeping capacity for 2 further guests.
We have a hectare of land with olive groves (please note we are during 2023/24 replanting our olive trees due to a serious disease affecting the whole region - see our pictures), fruit trees and a vineyard, a stone BBQ, and we are developing a garden with lawn and local flora. There is a swimming pool (June - September) with its own dedicated terrace available for guests' exclusive and private use. The villa is peaceful and secluded, with the owners living only 100m away and always on hand to provide any advice or assistance. We are conveniently located in the middle of the Salento region, 20 minutes from the nearest beach and within striking distance of the entire peninsula. Salento has remained unchanged for generations: it is covered with thousands of acres of olive trees, has historic towns and villages, a spectacular coastal road, and countless beaches and coves. Although popular with Italian holidaymakers, it is seldom visited by foreign tourists and the locals will invariably give you a warm welcome. We are also less than half an hour from the wonderful Baroque city of Lecce, probably one of the most beautiful, atmospheric and yet least-visited of major Italian cities. A holiday in Salento is ideal for people who enjoy beach life, or exploring little-known corners of the Mediterranean - or who just want to relax in comfort, soaking up the summer sun.

About the host
Hosted by Bill
I moved to Puglia from London in 2008 with my partner and children, one of whom was born in Italy. We bought the rental villa and then the family house we now live in 100m away. We love the lifestyle here - the weather, pace of life, community feeling, food, countryside living, hundreds of miles of coastline ... the list goes on and on. We couldn't imagine returning to the UK now, and we're sure you'll understand why if you choose to stay as our guests in this wonderful part of the Mediterranean.
Why they chose this property
The villa is secluded and yet near to neighbouring towns; it is surrounded by olive groves and fruit trees; and it is right in the centre of the Salento region of Puglia, providing access to both the Adriatic and Ionian coastlines and their countless coves, bays and beaches.
What makes this property unique
This area of Puglia is as yet largely undiscovered by foreign tourists, providing one of the last corners of Italy that genuinely offers a taste of Italian rural life as it has been lived for generations. The people are warm and welcoming, and there are countless bars and restaurants offering exceptionable value for money and quality: eating out - and food more generally - are local obsessions. The cuisine, not to mention absurdly cheap wine, should not be missed!
The Salento region escaped the worst of the coronavirus pandemic, with relatively few cases and little excess pressure on hospitals. But before Covid-19 came along, the region had already recently been devasted by a disease affecting olive trees, Xylella fastidiosa. Unfortunately, the overwhelming majority of the tree stock is now dying. A state subsidy scheme has been introduced to replant all the trees but this will take time. In the meantime, this lovely region is now suffering, and many of the older olive farmers are struggling to survive. We very much hope that you still wish to visit and thereby help to kickstart the renewal of this wonderful region.
