This house worked well for the seven of us. The proximity to the National Park and Winthrop was good. We had plenty of space so that we could spread out. The back deck was especially nice for relaxing. The trail behind the house was recently cleared and very visible (we even saw a bear one night). We enjoyed the large dining table for games in the evening. The house was very quiet for sleeping and the stars at night from the back deck were beautiful. We would definitely stay here again if in the area.
The host was very responsive. We had asked about some air filters due to the smoke from local fires. Although they didn’t make it in the time we were there, it was appreciated they ordered some. This place is great for our pups! No worries about them getting loose. I walked the whole perimeter of the fence and there’s no open spots you have to worry about since it’s up near the highway. Our two labs had a blast exploring in the outer bushes, but they also loved the lush grass in the main yard. The newly updated back deck faces East and is very relaxing in the morning with birds and chipmunk chatter our dogs were intrigued by. The home may not be the newest, but it’s very functional for our family with plenty of room for everyone. The 5 AC units kept the place a comfortable temperature for hot mid-August weather. The trail down to the river was just the right distance since we have a puppy in training and he was able to flop right down in the cool water. We brought our lunch down one afternoon and not a soul in sight. There’s a nice cleared area with a picnic table and some chairs too.
The place was as advertised and perfect for us. It is located very conveniently to several trail heads within 3 miles of the place. We love the fact that everything was labeled. We didn’t have to guess which switch turned the dining room light on. Our host was very responsive to any questions we had I would have liked it if the driveway had been plowed there was 6 to 8 inches of snow, which was manageable, but would’ve been nice if it was plowed out when we got there.
Staying at this place was a cool experience. The house had a historic vibe with modern amenities. Plenty of space for large families or groups. The private hiking trail was great for morning and evening walks. We especially appreciated how dog friendly this place was. The front half of the property is fully fenced even though the photos don’t quite show it, which was great for our two GSD’s.
We had a wonderful wintery stay at this home in Mazama! The location was great and we enjoyed the fenced back yard which the dogs/kids could play and sled. The trail out back was a bonus. We loved the proximity to the XC ski trails and town.
Great accommodations for our family with adult children to hike the North Cascades. Kitchen well stocked for dinner “in” and location to Winthrop was close for dinner “out”. Beds were comfortable.
We Loved this place! It had everything we needed for a wonderful cross country ski vacation. The only small issues-only one dish towel and the basement bedroom, which was very nice unfortunately had a chemical smell about it. I definitely recommend this place!!!
Wonderful property with several bedrooms. Although it was just my husband, my dog, and myself, I can see this being a good place for larger groups. The yard was perfect for dogs. The cabin was a short distance from Winthrop, a charming little town. There is a small trail behind the cabin.
Multiple bedrooms and bathrooms which was great for our group of 7. Kitchen well stocked- plenty of blankets and towels. lots of little thoughtful items that made our stay easier/more enjoyable not found at other rentals.
Reasonae expectations from host and beautiful area!

About the host
Hosted by Tomoko Okubo
We are a couple who live in the Seattle area and try to escape the big city to our cabin in the Methow Valley as often as possible. We are experienced in tackling remodeling projects and were particularly drawn to this 100-year-old cabin for its rich history, beautiful scenery and potential to make it a home-away-from-home.
Why they chose this property
When visiting our cabin in spring, summer and fall, we love the fragrant pine smell while hiking our own trail that leads to the main MVSTA. Of course, the best part of visiting in the winter is the skiing. The snow is incomparable for cross country and skate skiing and the many miles of trails provide serene skiing with rarely bumping into other skiers. Our favorite haunts for shopping and dining are a short drive away to Winthrop. We also like going to the luxurious Sun Mountain Lodge for Sunday brunch.
What makes this property unique
This old house was built in 1906 as the main ranch house on the Big Valley Ranch, which was then located three miles west of Winthrop. In 1990 the building was moved to this location and placed on a daylight basement foundation and remodeled as a guest house. It has been remodeled further to the conveniences of modern living without losing its character. The yard is suitable for children and dogs. We hope you like it.
