About this property

Cozy Cabin in Heart of Tonto Forest

Just a 90 minute drive from Phoenix in the heart of rim country, you will find this little gem. With the East Verde river running all around you, many hiking trails, rivers and lakes nearby, it is a fisherman and nature lovers dream. Nestled in the trees and backing to the Tonto forest, in the highly sought after Whispering Pines neighborhood, you’d never guess you were just minutes from restaurants and shopping (10 mile; 20 min drive into Payson)!

BRAND NEW MINI SPLIT COOLING & HEATING SYSTEM INSTALLED JULY 2021!!!

Calendar updated through May 2022. For bookings beyond that, please message host to inquire about specific dates.

We welcome small to medium dogs (with a $30 pet fee), however we ask that you keep them out of the lower level of the cabin and suggest that you keep them leashed or close by at all times when outside so that they don’t run off and get lost in the forest.

On any given day, you are bound to see (& hear) many different forms of wild life including elk, rabbits, hummingbirds, hawks, coyotes, bobcats, a myriad of birds, and free-range cows to name a few. And the fishing in the East Verde river - just a 5 minute walk away - is out of this world...fully stocked with trout all year round! Please note that the water level in the river is lower this year (2021) - and in some parts dry - due to the drought that AZ has experienced.

The space
Welcome to Backwoods. This newly remodeled, 2 bedroom/2 bath 1100 SF cozy cottage is located in the heart of the Tonto forest and is designed for privacy, with an elevated wrap-around deck with built in bench seating, an outdoor dining table for 6, hammocks (perfect for a quick afternoon nap), propane grill (propane provided) and propane heater and fire pit (please bring your own propane tank for the heater and fire pit). You'll have the full cottage to yourself, with sleeping arrangements for up to 5 (1 Bdrm with King bed, 1 Bdrm with Queen bed, pull out sleeper sofa with full size memory foam mattress, queen luxury double high air mattress with built-in pump), two full bathrooms, and all the essentials: fridge, stove/oven, microwave, fully stocked coffee bar (just bring your own coffee), complimentary wi-fi, DVD players (& tons of movies), cable and smart TVs (in each bedroom and the two living rooms). There is a wood burning stove in the living room which warms up the entire upper level of the cabin, just bring your own wood and enjoy a cozy fire. The cabin is equipped with a mini-split cooling and heating system. There is also a swamp cooler in the lower level bedroom that can be used if needed, as well as wall fans installed in both living rooms and the lower level bedroom, and a ceiling fan in the master bedroom. There is a ceramic water cooler in the kitchen - you are welcome to bring your own 5 gallon jug of water and use it.

Whispering Pines is located in northern Gila County in the upper valley of the East Verde River, between Washington Park to the north and Beaver Valley to the south. It is 12 miles (19 km) north of Payson.

Other things to note
For half of the year, there are federal fire restrictions in place - which means no camp fires. However, there is a private propane fire pit for our guests to use throughout the year - just bring your own propane tank and hook it up. During burn season, we leave a wood burning fire pit out for our guests to use. We just ask that you be sure the fire is completely out before you head in for the night.

The driveway can accommodate about 5 medium size vehicles if you park side-by-side and back-to-back - there is a small inlet in the right of the driveway that can accommodate a small to medium sized vehicle.

Early check-in and late check-out may be available for a $15 fee and must be approved by host in advance of your stay.

As we wish to be able to continue to share our cabin with others, please respect our home as you would your own. You may be charged for any damages incurred during your stay.

Parking is a bit tight but we’ll worth the location, wish they stocked coffee but other than that it was wonderful place to stay and would definitely consider staying again

Nice cabin on hillside

It's a great two story cabin located on a hillside. Easy to get to and the owners provide excellent instructions on how to operate everything and shut it down when leaving. Very reasonably priced as well.

Fall get away.

Everything was great, the location was central to our needs for hiking, fishing, and firewood cutting. The propane heater on the deck was great for extending our outdoor enjoyment. Owners checked in to make sure everything was good after our first night. We would definitely stay again!

Fantastic!!

This was our third time renting this property and as in prior rentals everything was perfect. This time there were still small piles of snow around the area which gave my grandchildren the first time ever to throw a snowball !! Woke the next morning to 4 elk in the backyard and many multicolored birds.

Disappointed

It took about a day to get the musky smell out of the cabin by opening all the windows .... it didn't look like the cabin had been cleaned prior to our arrival .... The owners food was left in the frig/freezer .... bath towels were less than desirable .... this was a family cabin, not a VRBO rental property .....

"Over the River & Through the Woods To Grandmas' House We Go!"

Great Trip! Whispering Pines is a hidden gem! I took my wife and 3 children (Ages 7,9,11) for Mother's Day weekend. The weather was perfect with plenty of areas to explore near the river fishing and around the mountainside hunting for geodes. We took an afternoon and hiked to Water Wheel which the whole family enjoyed. The seclusion of Whispering Pines away from the city enabled us to view the stars and we saw the solar storm at night. The cabin was cozy and my wife and I reflected that we felt like kids again all tucked in at our Grandparents home. Our only constructive feedback would be it was difficult to stream movies and the internet ran slow. There were DVD's provided that solved the problem. The main bed was also too soft for our taste. However, we still wished we had booked more nights!

Throughly enjoyed this VRBO! It was perfect for our family of 5 (2year old, 4year old and our pup). The cabin was stocked with everything we needed! Cozy and homey. Owners were very responsive and accommodating. Make sure to explore the neighborhood! It has some really awesome water spots! Really great to bring the kids too! We will absolutely be staying here again. Thank you Kim and Justin!

high temperature escape

I love this part of Arizona and enjoy camping along the Mogollon Rim but the hard work associated with camping make it seems like work. This year I chose to try VRBO and glad I did. The Backwoods Cabin is so welcoming gives you a cozy cabin feeling. This cabin has all the necessities of home and making it soo easy to prepare meals and freshen up after a day of hiking, fishing, bike riding. This cabin is far enough out of city lights that my kids favorite nighttime activity was reclining in the hammock and stargazing while they ate marshmallow smores. We loved every minute of our 21 day stay that we were hesitant to return back to the 116 Valley heat. Looking forward to returning next year. Thank youD. Johnson

Wonderful Cabin!

We had the wonderful opportunity to stay in this cabin for a few days! We also brought our baby who is under 1. We were so happy to find a rocking chair which helped out a lot at night. The master bed upstairs was very comfortable. Kitchen had all the necessary tools to cook meals. The porch was so nice to sit and enjoy the trees and the birds. Overall, the cabin had all the amenities that made our stay comfortable and enjoyable! Only thing we would like to mention is that the cabin is right next to the road and the driveway is at an incline. So it was a little difficult for me to turn into the cabin and park but had my husband do it and he had no trouble.

Cute cabin in lovely location

We had some troubles getting in at the check-in time due to cleaners running behind. We didn’t get in until a 1.5 hours after check-in time. The owners were quick to resolve the issue when they were aware. They were very kind and helpful. Once we were in in, we settled easily and enjoyed our time in the cabin. There is so much to do in and around the area. It was really beautiful!

Awesome!

We had a great time here! Views are beautiful and the cabin warmed up fast! Nice scenic drive from payson to the cabin. Only thing to note is that the listing claims 3 beds and a pullout couch but there were only 2 beds and the pullout. There were 7 of us with 2 in each bed and one on the upstairs couch(not a pullout). Still, everyone slept comfortably and had a great time, so I can’t complain :)
