About this property
Hummingbird House - Scenic Peaceful Foothills Getaway only minutes from downtown
Perched in the Sierra Nevada foothills overlooking Tahoe National Forest, the Hummingbird House is a short drive from historic Grass Valley and Nevada City, yet feels private and remote. Whether a romantic getaway, a small family vacation, or a solo escape from the city, you will find tranquility and beauty here. Enjoy the gardens, views and fresh air. Expect comfort and convenience...spectacular sunrises and sunsets...picturesque and peaceful.
The Hummingbird House is a cozy studio cottage on our beautiful 7 acres property a short drive from historic downtown Grass Valley. There are two other houses on the property (one we live in, one with a long-term renter). We’ve got cell service and WiFi.
The cottage offers a plush king bed and a desk area if you need to work remote (while gazing longingly out the window at the trees, mountains and birds of course). Full bathroom with shower and tub, a kitchen with stove, microwave, oven, toaster, coffee maker - all the utensils and cookware you need. We provide freshly ground coffee and a few tea options.
Additional sleeping options are the convertible couch in the living room area, which folds down into a full size bed (mattress topper offered for extra comfort) and/or we can provide an air bed.
The cottage has a wrap-around deck with dining table and chairs and a futon that can fold down into a bed for optimum stargazing and napping. There is also a private patio and porch swing, in case everyone needs their own little outdoor nook.
Guests are encouraged to explore the property! Sit by the pond, try out our makeshift disc golf course (i.e. trees for targets!), utilize the shared outdoor kitchen equipped with sink and bbq, walk the land, play cornhole, watch what we like to call "Hummingbird TV".... And we highly recommend exploring the garden to see what's in season, make yourself a bouquet, or pick some plums, pears, apples, etc! With over 90+ different flowers, trees, herbs etc growing on the property there is lots to explore. We can also provide binoculars and a bird guide for the bird enthusiasts!
Dogs are welcome, but please note there are other dogs that live on the property that might come say hello! They are friendly, but you can let us know if it's an issue. We advise that you leash your dog while exploring the property if they don’t do well with other dogs - also this can be helpful as pups do like to take off into the forest once they catch a glimpse of a jackrabbit!
Please note that in the winter after a heavy storm, our well water may get discolored from the clay soil mineral sediment. While it is completely safe (we have it tested), and it's the same water we use ourselves for showering and such, it isn't great for drinking and cooking. So we provide you with large jugs of spring water, as much as you need.

The house was lovely--loved the decor and furnishings, and it was probably the most comfortable bed I've ever slept in away from home. I loved watching the hummingbirds and jack rabbits in the morning from the porch. Check in and check out were both smooth and easy, and communication was prompt. Although the main house is right next door, with all the trees, it felt very private. A few minor issues:-Kitchen was missing potholders and dish towels-Some dishes had food residue and what looked like mouse droppings in cupboard-Landscaping/outside spaces didn't seem well-maintained/overgrownOther than those few things, it was all around pleasant stay and a good deal for the price if you're looking for a quiet, secluded stay.
My husband and I had a very nice, relaxing stay. We weren’t able to connect to the WiFi. But we were offered early check in and late check out. The property was beautiful. It was clean and comfortable
The surrounding property was lovely and the host was available. The tap water turned brown because of the rain, ants got into my gear and food, the heater wouldn't work properly, and there was no tv. The host did try to help the situation by providing drinking water by coming in and fiddling with the thermostat and finally providing a space heater.
My partner and I came to escape the grind of the city and enjoy some tranquility, and got exactly what we were looking for. Beautiful views galore, and a great place to bring the dogs for a relaxing weekend. There’s plenty of hiking, food and cute towns to visit. Great spot!
Loved the Hummingbird House. The shape of the living space is unique and comfortable, and the outdoor space is inviting and restful. The host was super attentive and attuned to our needs. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Highly recommended!
Peaceful country setting was great for our holiday weekend exploring the area. Even though it’s out in the country it was close to the river, wineries and restaurants that we wanted to check out. Wonderful hosts.

Jill is lovely and a great guest. Clean, friendly and easy going. I enjoyed our chats. She is welcome back anytime!
My friend and I LOVED staying here. It was so peaceful and comfortable. We spent hours reading, writing, catching up on the porch with beautiful views of the mountains or the cozy sofa and dining nook. We would come back in a heartbeat.
The house is remote, yet so close to town. We had all the family over for a reunion and though it is just a tiny house, there was ample room for everyone to enjoy! I will definitely be back.
We had an awesome time @ the Hummingbird House. Tal answered all questions, helped and gave us fresh eggs for breakfast. We had a great time in the nature, we loved the quietness of the place
Lovely home in serene surroundings. Great place to rest, relax, read, and explore. Lots of birds and a couple of hares add to the ambiance. Fresh eggs from the hens and flowers from the garden make this a truly special place. Will definitely revisit when time allows. Thank you for sharing
The Hummingbird House offers a wonderful getaway. The place is comfortable and clean, and the hosts have stocked it with everything one needs - including fresh eggs from their chickens. The property is private and out it in country, yet close enough to easily go back and forth to town (or in our case, the Bluegrass Festival at the Fairgrounds). The view is incredible and the hosts couldn't be more welcoming or accommodating. We love the Hummingbird House!
We had a lovely stay at the Hummingbird House. The house was cozy and comfortable, especially the lovely bed. We got a great nights sleep. The host was friendly and a dog lover, which was great. We were able to walk around the property with our dog, and even in his old age he did a little chase with the host's dog, which was a treat for him. Would return again.
My daughter and I stayed with are 2 pups. It was absolutely gorgeous and didn’t disappoint at all. We both wish we could live there, such a beautiful place. We definitely will go back and recommend to are family and friends. The host even brought us fresh farm eggs. If you are looking for a quite cozy place to stay, this is the place.
We had an amazing time at this place! It was truly such a beautiful spot, and a great place to unwind. Tal was super attentive as a host, and even brought us fresh eggs in the morning! He encouraged us to explore the property and felt genuinely very welcoming. The grounds themselves are quite beautiful and their gardens are incredible! I did get bit by a lot of mosquitoes so I'd bring a citronella candle next time! Would definitely come back here.
Perfect place to relax and enjoy the scenery, beautiful views wildlife and birds— loved the hummingbirds! Close enough to Grass Valley to get there easily and quickly. The hosts have a lovely garden and graciously shared — the flowers, herbs, apples and tomatoes—- just delicious! I loved it all! Thank you!!
The property was peaceful, comfortable and relaxing!. The kitchen had everything we needed. I am not a morning person but because the other guests commented about the sunrise I had to see it too. The sunrise over the mountains was breathtaking! And the blackberries were quite sweet! Thank you!
Was a perfect spot for a quiet fall study getaway for my daughter. Thoughtful little touches like fresh eggs from their chickens! Friendly and low key check-in and communication. Beautiful calm view, wildlife, and -of course - hummingbirds! Nevada City is close for a pleasant day outing. Was also a perfect spot for our high energy dog. She made friends, had fun walks, and got to hang out on the porch and in the yard. Will definitely keep on our favorites list for future getaways.
