A fly fisherman's haven, the cabin sits a mere 50 yards from the AuSable River's 'Dream Mile', which was featured in the fly Fishing portion of ESPN's Outdoor Games (2001) and Outdoor Life's East Coast Fly Fishing Competition (2001, 2002). Fishing access by special reservation so please inquire.
A massive stone fireplace serves as the centerpiece of the great room and will take the chill out of any Adirondack night. With its master bedroom and two cozy bunk rooms, the cabin sleeps 8 people, with day beds in living room for napping. In the reservation, please provide the exact number of guests. The cabin also features a full bath, with hot and cold running water, an outfitted kitchen, and a beautiful screened-in porch for meals or relaxation.

The cabin was so picturesque. Great meals on the porch with the glistening river. Day 1 we went to Ausable Chasm and antiquing. Day 2 to coaster ride and Lake Placid. Excellent location. Highly recommend.
This cabin is outstanding. Great location, off the road but close to many activities. The cabin is comfortable, fully outfitted, yet remains rustic. Would change a thing. Also, the communication before and during visit was well done. Thank you.
My boyfriend and I had the most wonderful week at this cabin. It’s secluded and absolutely gorgeous. As everyone says, the pictures don’t do it justice! We had a blast exploring the local areas, fishing the river, evenings on the screened porch, nighttime movies on the daybeds and a fire in the huge fireplace. Most importantly we are so glad to have met Jim, the property manager. He was so spectacular and even helped us out when we had a dead truck battery.
Having stayed here previously, I thought I knew what to expect. To my surprise, many things have been improved and the overall size of the cabin was much bigger than I remembered. The weather for the week was perfect and our family of 5 was outside hiking, biking, and swimming everyday. The cabin was always cooler than expected and gave us tons of space so each kid could have some alone time. Lots of meals, snacks, and games were played on the outdoor teak dining table. Next trip will be winter for the kids to experience a very special place
This cabin was everything we wanted for a relaxing vacation. The kitchen and bathrooms were stocked, beds were comfortable, and it was impeccably clean. There is so much to around the outside of teh cabin as well as local towns nearby.
To be able to stay in a 94 year old cabin that was as perfect as this one we feel lucky or honored. We wanted remote relaxation and boy this fit the bill. It was within 25 minutes of great restaurants and we were bowled over with the scenery. We’ve been coming to Placid for forty years but never did much up it this area. The views were spectacular. The trails at the cabin were well maintained and we would have liked to have fished but it was 90 and they did not recommend fishing in such warm temperatures. The porch, the swing, the picnic table area, the eagles fishing down on the river and of course the cabin itself, just unreal! I would love to know the history of this cabin.,,, just imagine what it was like when it was built in 1928!
Our stay was even better than expected. If you want alone time, this is for you. The cabin was so cozy and warm and everything you need is provided.
Thank you Deerlands. We will be back for sure!
This is a really magical property—I’ve never seen anything quite like it. I had a real sense of history there; I felt a bit outside of time. And yet it’s very comfortable, with all the amenities you could hope for. (The phone signal is a little sketchy sometimes, but that’s not surprising.) The road in was sometimes a little treacherous when there was ice and snow, but it was well-maintained. (When they say you should have 4-wheel drive, believe them!) The fireplace was wonderful. When I first walked in, there was a fire cracking away and, unexpectedly, a Christmas tree. I’ve never felt so welcome.
The photos don’t really feature the kitchen or bathroom, but both are great. The kitchen is big and well set up, with a comfortable eating area; the bathroom has a glorious claw foot tub.
I wholeheartedly recommend this place, if you’re looking for a little magic.
The property was a rustic, quaint, authentic stay! The downside to writing a good review is it can attract more guests, and I would love nothing more than for this cabin to remain a secret!
If you are looking to put the phone away and get away this is the spot! I don’t know why they don’t show pictures of the kitchen and bathroom because they are updated and have all the creature comforts you would look for
Property is historic and rustic.
Our cats loved the noises in the cottage and even caught a few critters.
Some confusion with property management about longer term stay ( 4 weeks in our case) cleaning arrangements. Renters need to confirm terms for cleaning before engaging the cleaners.
This cabin was everything we had imagined and more. It is truly rustic and lovely, surrounded by many interesting trails to explore. From the fireplace to the cute and cozy decor, it made for a warm welcome and wonderful stay. This place is relaxing and beautiful! Was missing it as soon as we were driving away. Would absolutely recommend, and would love to go back someday :)
This is a fantastic property if you want to get away to a secluded location. The cabin is as advertised - an authentic Adirondack log cabin with tons of history and charm. Rustic, clean and comfortable.
Jim the caretaker was great - very helpful and accommodating. I highly recommend reaching out to him for any questions or help you need for your stay. I will definitely be back!

A mostly quiet and rustic log cabin
As advertised, this is a restored log cabin in the woods. For those seeking some privacy away from the crowded areas of Lake Placid this may do the trick. But a few notes that may make a difference that we were not aware of when booking. The cabin is down a very very long dirt road from the main road. This was inconvenient when making trips in and out of the property, especially at night. Also, this dirt road is shared with a logging road so you have to beware of large trucks. Because of the logging, and the fact that the cabin is across from a road despite the long road in, it is not as quiet as we expected. Even on weekends. The amenities of the cabin were nice, having a modern kitchen and bath were key while having the rustic other features. WiFi was unreliable for those needing it beyond occasional or casual use.

The cabin we've been looking for
The Deerlands is fabulous. Total privacy. The kitchen is much nicer than you typically find in a cabin. Nice appliances. Well appointed. The fireplace is awesome. Nice screened in porch with a large dining room table… views of the river through the trees. There is a road right on the other side of the river, but we saw only a few cars the four days we were there. As other reviewers have mentioned, the living room is dark. Perfectly fine for sitting by a crackling fire, but too dark for reading.
The master bedroom has a very comfortable queen-size bed. In the other rooms, the bunk beds are more like what you'd expect to find in a log cabin: a foam pad on plywood. The master bedroom has a dresser. The rooms with the bunks just have the beds – no place to put your clothes and things, but again, not a big deal.
The bathroom is nice. Everything works great. A second bathroom would be awesome, but it's do-able with the one.
As you get closer to the arrival date, the property manager connects you with Jim who gets you settled in and looks after the place. He's very helpful with finding the place and answering any questions. Would be helpful to be connected with him earlier in the process.
One of the reviews from 2014 mentions that there's a washer and dryer. They must be in the basement, which is now locked and inaccessible. Not a problem for us as we were only there four days.
All in all, a truly great cabin which we hope to return to next year.

About the host
Hosted by John Johanson
The cabin is owned by my self and my father. I am a young architect interested in historic preservation, restoration, and land management.
Why they chose this property
The property is a real gem with beautiful forests, great river access, and charming Adirondack architecture.
When we purchased it, the cabin had been left to deteriorate, so we put in quite of bit of work to restore it to it's original condition (except where would could improve the amenities without compromising the character).
We had used it as a family camp for a number of years. Because we were only there a couple times a year, though, we felt that it was under enjoyed. So we opened it to the public so that more people could experience its unique charm.
What makes this property unique
River access, peaceful seclusion, wonderful fly fishing.
