We are just a 100 yard walk down a dead-end street that ends at the beach! This part of the beach is very uncrowded even during the summer. Upon entering, you will be greeted with tiled floors that are offset by the warmth of vintage California redwood paneling and exposed brick walls. This house is truly stuck in the 1970s and not decked out with all the latest gadgets or appliances. It is very simplistic, rustic, and well, kind of quirky. To offset what it is lacking, it has a prime island location! It's suitable for 2 people, or 3 if the third person wants to sleep on a small couch, or you're welcome to bring a blow-up mattress – there is ample room for one.
Please note: guests will not have access to AC/Heat controls. This house is equipped with a finicky geo-thermal unit. If you desire a certain temp, please let us know and we will adjust the thermostat to your desire. However, being an older home located in a subtropical climate, it will never be 70 degrees inside during the summer months. The property sits upon what once was a natural sand dune and is very shady with lots of oaks and palm trees. There is unkempt vegetation everywhere – there is no manicured lawn here. (This lot is reminiscent to what this end of island looked like before the resort area was developed). We have chosen to have a sustainable yard – no watering required – and provide an ecological oasis for native plants and animals. If you're lucky, you will see the small herd of white tail deer that call a corner of the yard their home. PLEASE NOTE: We are surrounded by lots of trees; therefore, there is not a lot of natural light inside, so it may be too dark for some people’s taste. We have ample lighting and lamps throughout to compensate for the lack of natural light coming through the windows and doors. However, this can be beneficial especially during the hot summer months after being out on the beach all day. So, if what you’re looking for is a place with all the bells and whistles of a newly renovated home or an airy light-filled modern beach house with all the latest appliances and perks, please look elsewhere – you’re not going to be happy here. We strive to make our guests happy and comfortable during their stay and enjoy their time in our ocean playground. **FYI: there is no dishwasher or washer/dryer. If you need to do laundry, there is an IOP Laundromat about 2.5 miles away in the Harris Teeter shopping center.
PETS: We do accept friendly, housebroken dogs only – Limit 2 Dogs – preferably smaller dogs, but will accept large dogs depending on breed. ALL DOGS MUST BE PRE-APPROVED PRIOR TO BOOKING. We charge a non refundable pet fee of $50. This fee is included in your quote when you select that you are bringing pets. Also, when outside, your dog will have to be on a leash and all pet waste will have to be picked up and disposed in the outside trash bin. We do not accept cats. City of Isle of Palms Dog Rules: Dogs can run off-leash on the beach every day from 5a.m. to 9a.m., after that, they must be leashed at all times. If you would like more info, please inquire via email and I’ll be happy to answer any of your questions before you book.

The listing was accurate, the kitchen was fully-equipped with what I needed to cook, the walk to the beach was short, and the space was exactly what I needed. I had a great vacation!
A note about the coffee maker. We had a system figured out by the time we got it so we left it for the next people along with the coffee and filters.. I also think you might want to confirm the condition of the one that was there. We use a French press so I’m not that familiar with the electric ones. Thanks again for everything!
Very nice, small but perfect for a couple who doesn’t mind just having a place to sleep and rest. If you plan on spending a lot of time on the beach this place is perfect.
We stayed for 4 days in April and enjoyed our time! The beach is just a short walk away and the house is filled with anything you would need on a vacation.
This is a very unique lodging. It did feel like a Hobbit house with the wood and brick interior. It is a little short on dishes and coffee cups but it did have a full size refrigerator and a descent assortment of pots and pans. It was a little cold during the day and we had to ask the last night for them to turn up the temp. which they did. The location was convenient to the beach and dining on the island. The owners were always responsive to our requests. The shower was great.
This rental is listed as a vintage vibe home stuck in the 1970s. It is definitely stuck in the 70s for sure because it has not been kept up with. I read the disclaimer from the owner about not having the amenities like the homes surrounding it, but this is a dilapidated house inside and out. A part of the roof was missing, unkept landscaping, trash and stuff just strewn all over. Rooms that didn't make sense, doors to nowhere. It is a little short on dishes and coffee cups, no cutting board, the countertop was worn out concrete, roach traps all throughout the kitchen, but when the roaches and/or water bugs were constantly being seen, we had enough. My dog wouldn't step foot in the kitchen, he was freaked out about the place. We left after 3 days. It was a nice location to the beach but I'd call this the Addams family house, just creepy. I will not stay here again, EVER!! I'm sorry to the owners, but I think some updates to the place would be very much warranted.
Great beach, great location, great weather & good price.Life is too short to be negative or judgmental so I won't. If you're going to rent here, I would read the rest of the reviews and decide for yourself. May God bless Gertrude and her grandson. My wife thought the architecture of our space was really cool. Lastly, if you need to wash your dog, the showerhead can be hand held for an easy wash with great water pressure.
Cozy, very clean. Communication was great, short walk to the beach. As long as you read the amenities, there are no surprises. It was quiet and so lovely. A very Unique place to stay and we enjoyed the visit. NOTE: Bed is very firm, couch is soft.
We really enjoyed this charming place. It is quite artistic, with nice brick work and arches. Excellent shower. The bed was quite comfortable. Readers should look at the caveat in the host's description of her place-- it is not for the typical Wild Dunes tourist. One downside was due to the extreme heat, the A/C went out 3 times, which was readily fixable once we found the right breaker. Overall, we loved our stay.
We really enjoyed our stay at Rustic Beach Retreat. Great place especially if you have a dog.

Why they chose this property
The house is on a dead end street that ends at the beach. The beach is pretty private with not a lot of people because there is not a lot of public parking on this end of the island.
What makes this property unique
This house may not be the "prettiest" on the street, but it is very unique and vintage 1970s. It's not a big, white beach house like the others on the street, but it has been here the longest. It survived Hurricane Hugo in 1989 with minimal damage while a lot of other houses on the island were totally destroyed. It sits on top an elevated half acre sand dune with lots of trees. Some people might say that it looks "unkempt", but the owner wants it to be an undisturbed natural habitat with all the flora and fauna that was once present on this South Carolina sea island. So if you want to stay in a fancy modern beach house with an unnatural manicured lawn, then please look elsewhere. We are definitely not where you want to be.
