About this property

Leaning Lorelei: Light & Airy Downtown Cottage

Leaning Lorelei is a charming 120-year-old cottage located in the heart of Downtown Wilmington, only a 15 min walk/5 min drive to the Riverfront. Situated across the street from a park and just two blocks to local coffee shops, dining, and shopping. Newly renovated and full of beautiful architectural details, such as tall ceilings, oversized windows, and original hardwood floors. 2BR/1BA, 2 work desks, 2 car private driveway, modern appliances and furnishings, fully equipped kitchen.

Located in Wilmington's Castle Street Arts District, this turn of the century (the 1900 one) cottage was originally built in 1903, the same year the Wright Brothers made their historic flight, and has been made new for 2023. The cottage is an eclectic mix of new and old, blending extensive renovations and upgrades with old world charm and character.

Visiting Leaning Lorelei is like taking a trip back in time. As you enter into the large central hall you will immediately notice the tall ceilings, original hardwood floors, and an abundance of oversized windows which fill the space with natural light. That theme carries over into the two bedrooms, each equipped with a desk ideal for remote work. The front bedroom even has the original coal burning fireplace (although no longer functional) and ties into the fireplace in the living room (also inoperable). The full bathroom is packed with charm – you will love the clawfoot tub/shower combo with a floor-to-ceiling tile surround, as well as the refinished antique sink vanity. Several stained glass windows carry the whimsical nature of the home all the way through the back door, leading you to an outdoor dining area and large fenced yard.

The bones of the home remain intact (including that old house lean!), otherwise everything is new as of 2022. Features include 2 car private driveway, fenced in yard and back patio, new furnishings, Fiber internet, Smart TV with all streaming services (use your own login), record player with built-in Bluetooth speaker, board games, washer and dryer, 100% cotton linens and towels, USB charging hubs and sound machines in both bedrooms, and a well stocked kitchen that comes with all the essentials (e.g., plates/bowls/cups/utensils, pots/pans/baking sheets, knife block, cutting boards, microwave, toaster oven, blender, drip coffee maker, coffee, filters, tea, etc.). Other amenities include hair dryer, iron and iron board, and shampoo/conditioner/body wash.

Enjoy coffee in the morning or wine in the evening as you relax on your rocking chair front porch overlooking Robert Strange Park. The park, located directly across the street from the cottage, has well maintained tennis/pickleball courts (open to the public), a community pool ($3/day/adult, $1/day/child), playground, Fit for Fun Center (kids play place), and an adult fitness center. You will find four pickleball paddles at the cottage for your use.

Children are welcome, but the house is not childproof (100+ year old uneven hardwoods, brick hearth fireplaces, raised transitions between rooms, etc.). Pack ‘n play and high chair provided.

Quite, sweet, adorable cottage!
My sister lives in NC, and I live in SC, so we try to meet up somewhere fun for some quality “sister-time”! This little cottage was perfect! It’s fairly close to everything! Not walking distance for us, as we’re in out late 50’s, but a short drive! We loved it!

Hey there!

My name is Jeff. When I’m not planning my next trip you’ll find me listening to vinyl or enjoying a meal or craft beer in town. Charlotte is home but my wife and I spend a lot of time in Wilmington (where we have a rental property) and Asheville. We tend to stay within a 2-4 hour drive domestically unless we’re visiting close friends in NYC and Austin, where we’ve both lived. I am also big on international travel and have stayed in short term rentals in more than 30 countries.

I am new to hosting but have taken great care setting up our first listing, Leaning Lorelei. Hopefully we will have the opportunity to host you in our beautiful historic cottage located in the heart of Downtown Wilmington!

Why they chose this property

My wife and I live in a builder grade home in Charlotte. Think gray walls, all white kitchen cabinets, and LVT floors on the main level with carpeted bedrooms upstairs. While it's a perk that the house is new, we fell in love with the charm and character of this beautiful cottage in Wilmington, probably because it's the complete opposite of our home in Charlotte! Tall ceilings, tons of natural light, original hardwood floors, 100+ year old fireplaces, and all the whimsical tile throughout the home are just a few reasons why we couldn't resist this quiet refuge in Downtown Wilmington. We also love being steps away from coffee shops, restaurants, and shopping.

The home received a full renovation over the last three years thru 2022, and yet still has most of the architectural details that you'd expect from a home its age (including that old house lean!). We hope you will enjoy Leaning Lorelei as much as us!
