Charming former church near the Hudson w/ hot tub. A tranquil retreat.
Nestled in the hamlet of Staatsburg, stay in this serene former church — now a stunning two-bedroom residence. Enjoy the natural beauty of public parkland as you walk to Mills Mansion and the Hudson River. End your day with a soak in the hot tub and a look at the stars.
The Church was built in 1876 and is featured in a chapter of ‘Staatsburg: A Village Lost in Time’ by Anthony P. Musso — a wonderful read for anyone curious about the history of this special hamlet.
Enjoy a historic and memorable escape in the heart of the Hudson Valley. Consider this space your sanctuary.
The adjacent Parsonage is also available for larger groups.
GETTING HERE Between two train stations: a 12-minute drive (Amtrak - Rhinecliff) or 20 minutes (Metro North - Poughkeepsie). The property is just under a 2-hour drive from NYC, 10 minutes to the town of Rhinebeck and 10 minutes to Hyde Park.
THE SPACE The main living space is the former sanctuary: open, airy, and filled with beautiful amber light through the original glass-paned windows. Its acoustics are phenomenal (and we now have a baby grand piano!). A cozy corner nook with a gas fireplace and rocking chair is the perfect spot to settle in.
SLEEPING AREAS The main bedroom has a very comfortable queen bed with a door opening onto a small front porch. The den bedroom has a writing desk, a pullout couch, and bookshelves stocked with everything from Japanese haiku and poetry to visual art books.
A NOTE ABOUT LIGHT The original corrugated amber glass windows cast a beautiful, muted glow throughout the space — one of the Church's most distinctive features. For those who are light-sensitive, we provide eye coverings for a restful night's sleep.
OUTDOORS The outdoor space is made for lingering — gather around the picnic table, pull up an Adirondack chair, or stretch out in the hammock. Fire up the charcoal grill for an al fresco meal, with additional tables for dining and gathering. And when the sun goes down, end your evening in the hot tub under the stars.
ENTERTAINMENT & CONNECTIVITY Flat-screen TV with Apple TV and high-speed Wi-Fi throughout.
HEATING, COOLING & POWER Central heating and AC throughout, plus a backup generator — so you'll always be warm and powered, even during snowstorms.
AN ENCLOSED SUN PORCH A quiet retreat for reading or resting in the spring and summer months.
THE TRAIN An occasional train passes through — a classic Hudson Valley soundtrack that many guests find adds to the charm.
THINGS TO DO There are plenty of walks and hikes nearby, including Mills Mansion and a walk along the Hudson River, a short walk. Rhinebeck is a 10-minute drive, and the Omega Institute for Holistic Studies is a 15-minute drive. Bikes and paddle boards are available for use. Plenty of antique shops are nearby to peruse, and wonderful places to get a massage or have a spa day in Rhinebeck and Hyde Park. The Staatsburg Public Library and Post Office are just down the street. Other outdoor activities include nearby pickleball courts, a public golf course, and kayaking. In summer, there are free outdoor weekly events at Mills and Vanderbilt Mansions.
REST AND RENEWAL The space is especially good for rest and healing. The main sanctuary space has a wonderful sound system and a baby-grand piano. There are yoga cushions, blankets and mats, an acupressure foot massager, plenty of books to read on the sun porch, and, of course, the hot tub. Hummingbirds, songbirds, and bunnies are frequent visitors.
THE PARSONAGE The adjacent Parsonage is also available for rental, making the two properties ideal for larger groups who'd like to spread out while staying connected.

Our host Alison, was super! Immediate response to given situation of snowstorm & being snowed in. Assured us of generator working in case power went off. Very amiable, calm and professional.

Thank you for your review and for your great communication and care for our space Teresa. You left it in wonderful shape and we welcome you back any time! Alison
This is the second time we stayed at the church and we had an incredible time. Close to village of Rhinebeck so there’s plenty to do, and the host made for a painless stay. I highly recommend this place and we’ll definitely be back.
Very interesting place to stay. Off the beaten path in a small village but close to everything in the general area.
Great restaurants, state park, historical sites, beautiful landscapes nearby.
House was meticulous and owners very helpful.
Hope to be back.
We spent a long weekend at the church in Staatsburg and had a great time. The church is basically mid way between Rhinebeck, which has shopping and a historic movie theater, and the history attractions in Hyde Park. The church was a beautiful place to stay and I’d definitely visit again.
This space is unique in the quaint town of Staatsburg. Location was easy to fine. It’s close to Hyde Park and Rheinbeck. There are lovely things to do right in your backyard, so to speak, the Mills Mansion tour is very good and the nearby state park has lovely trails. The church is lovingly decorated and definitely feels like someone’s home (versus a sterile set up). The bedroom has a comfy queen bed. The second room is a library with a sofa bed. It worked well for our 20 year old daughter but if you are a tad older, you might feel the springs. It was May when we visited and the area is lush and green but the sun comes up early so bring a sleeping mask if you prefer to sleep in. The space has great natural light. A lovely kitchen with everything and a good bathroom with plenty of hot water. Never made it into the hot tub. The nearby River and Post is delicious, and the A&A Market up the hill, 10 min walk, has good breakfast sandwiches, drinks and snacks. The church way a great base from which to explore the area.
As you might imagine, a repurposed church is quiet, spacious, and tranquil. We wanted easy access to Hyde Park, Rhinebeck, and Poughkeepsie and that we got. We also wanted a place we could rest and relax. Staatsburg is a quiet village, but it does have a first-rate restaurant. You can hear the commuter trains pass, but not loud enough to be a bother. Would recommend this property to anyone with a motor vehicle.

About the host
Hosted by Alison Cornyn
I'm an artist based between Brooklyn and the Hudson Valley. I like being a host to share unique places with visitors. I travel often and enjoy being hosted as well!
Why they chose this property
Staatsburg is a quiet hamlet in the Hudson Valley next to the Hudson River. It is close to NYC and a quick trip to more bustling towns and cities. We call it our tiny town.
What makes this property unique
People who step foot into this place feel a deep sense of peace. There is something special about it—perhaps its history as a church, perhaps the lineage of artists who have inhabited it since—a dancer, a painter, and two concert pianists. It now has all of the cozy accouterments of a country house, along with spaciousness and light.
