About this property
Star Catcher Cottage: A Borrego Mid-Century Modern Retreat
Star Catcher Cottage is a renovated Mid-Century Modern cottage in Borrego Springs, State Park and the charming town with its shops and restaurants. The home sits on a 1/2 acre of land, surrounded by a new cedar fence for privacy. The house has a separate dining room and laundry room. It includes brand-new appliances and a Caldera spa. Enjoy a Bose speaker unit with built-in Alexa while stargazing from the spa.
The space
I was so touched by this solid redwood Mid-Century Modern cottage from the moment I saw it, even though it was very run-down. Maybe I loved it because of the huge beams inside, or the beautiful light that shines in, or outside when it rains a big spiral emerges from the earth. Or perhaps I loved the old desert plants, trees, and the stones and crystals in the yard. And there is the changing desert light playing off all the surrounding mountains and especially the light that changes on Font's Point. I could sit and watch it all day. Oh, and the stars and planets at night are ... well they are awesome, to say the least. Borrego Springs has the rare designation of a Dark Night Sky Community.
It was a long and challenging renovation, but worth every moment because it was a labor of love. The house is now 1200 sq. feet with a light-filled and open floor plan. There is a private master bedroom, walk-in closet, and remodeled master bath. Also, the dining room has its own separate space, and so does the laundry room with another 1/2 bath.
After all the renovation and remodeling work was done, we added lovely art, antiques, high-end bedding, all-new appliances, a large-screen smart tv, a record player with a vintage record collection, a walk-in closet, bookcases filled with classic books, and many other great details.
Outside we added a gorgeous new Caldara spa and a triple burner Weber grill, as well as two outdoor fire pits. We fenced off the house and 1/4 acre of the yard with a new cedar fence, yet left 1/4 acre of our desert land open beyond the back yard for another large fire pit ... and just desert space.
The home is a short walk of three blocks to town with all its shops, restaurants, and art galleries, and an equally short walk to the magnificent and wild Anza Borrego State part; the largest state park in California.
There is something about this home that has inspired tremendous creativity for us. I hope it does for you too, and that you will love it as much as we do.
Guest access
You have the entire house and 1/2 acre yard all to yourself! the entire space is accessible and easy to get around.
Other things to note
Important. The house was built to be unconventional. Part of that is the fact that the builders intentionally made the rooms a few inches higher or lower than the main open space. There are small wooden ramps on each one for safety to avoid a tripping hazard. But I would like to mention that fact here. Please be aware of this.

About the host
Hosted by Tamara Shure
I love finding old treasures and renovating them, whether it's an old cottage in a beautiful area (but the place needs tlc), or furniture etc. This old cottage was in great need and it beings me joy to look and it now. Most of the art and furniture (other than high-end appliances and mattresses etc,) were also things I found and renovated. This is something I love to do. All three of my properties are highly rated guest favorites on Airbnb and I am a Superhost.
Why they chose this property
The area is surrounded by the largest state park in CA and is gorgeous. The home (1200 sq. Feet) had wonderful potential. It is a rare redwood mid-century modern house that is only a few blocks from the entrance to the largest State Park and also just three blocks to town.
What makes this property unique
It is so charming, and is privacy fenced. It's an antique treasure. There is a lovely spa for relaxing after a hike.
