We had a wonderful three night stay in this classic New England family lakefront camp. It is everything a historic cottage should be! Thank you for sharing your treasured family retreat with us!
We absolutely loved our stay on the serene Squam lake. It's a beautiful historic lakeside cottage with tons of charm. We stayed with our 3 boys and grandparents and it made for an incredible vacation. Christina was an incredible host sharing

Thanks for renting my cottage and it was lovely having your family on the property enjoying the lake and surrounding area. Come back soon!
A breathtaking setting with a beautiful view of the lake, a dock for sitting and swimming off of, canoe/kayaks, and a tennis court - and we used all of it! There's also easy access to hiking and charming nearby towns, shops, and restaurants. The house is very comfortable and provided everything we needed. To top it all off, the owner really went above and beyond to make our stay just fantastic.

Thanks, Marni, for such a wonderful review! I loved having you and your family as guests. Please come back again soon!
We had an amazing stay. The cabin is accurately described, very clean, and very charming. It is a wonderful, loved, family retreat full of character, with plenty of seating areas, private little nooks, as well as plenty of space to be all-together, and thoughtful items needed for a great time away at the lake - both indoors and outdoors. It is very lake-focused- it is directly on the water and you feel all the time that you are "at the lake" - no matter where you are in the house. The sunsets and views are amazing. We had a wonderful time and will plan to stay again!

Thank you for taking the time to write such a nice review. I look forward to hosting you again in 2026!
This property is a gem. A quintessential cottage feel with all the amenities would want for a lake side stay. The canoeing and kayaks were a highlight for my teenage kids and the location is pristine. I can’t recommend this property enough and Squam lake is, in my opinion, the most beautiful lake in New England.

Bill, thanks for such a lovely review and I hope you can come stay lakeside again soon! It was a pleasure hosting you.
What a relaxing stay at Squam Lake, Camp Cottonwood! A quaint cabin right on the water with the sounds of loons in the afternoon made for a unique experience. Our host, Christy, gave us a tour of the home and made us feel welcome. Highly recommend! Make sure you make time to go to the beach in Sandwich as well as the swimming hole at the ‘Potholes’. Coffee shops and seafood restaurants galore. Don’t miss this charming setting and all of the local towns on your visit. There’s also the Loon boat ride at the Nature and Science zoo.

Liked: Check-in, communication, location
Disliked: Cleanliness
Great views, plenty of room and classic lake house. Unfortunately, the entire house is infested with carpenter ants and mice. The information paperwork that was provided once we were checked in described ways to deal with the problem by suggesting trapping methods for the mice and spraying pesticides for ants. With 3 infants and parents staying for the week it was unacceptable. Our guests for the week left after 2 days.

I am very sorry to hear this was your experience. None of the previous renters since June had an issue with pests. Never once did you notify me during your week long stay that you had any problem whatsoever with ants or mice. If you had I would have had a professional there the same day to resolve the issue. Before and during your stay I told you repetitively to please contact me if you had any questions or concerns, and I never heard from you until the day of your departure. I very much wish you had reached out as soon as there was an issue as I made my cell phone available to you and reiterated my openness for communication when we met in person the day after you arrived. This is an unwinterized lake cabin. There is an authenticity to its construction with no insulation and no basement and there are small cracks places where it is impossible to keep all pests out 100% of the time. Think upgraded summer camp cabin concept. It is country living. The benefits are you are directly on the water with stunning views and enjoy a cottage much like the one in the movie On Golden Pond. The downside is that I am limited to what pest control methods can be used because of their environmental impact to the lake. I did NOT ever suggest verbally or in the house notes spraying ant pesticide in the home. I did suggest if pests were noticed that using mouse and ant traps are what work best and some are located under the kitchen sink to use if needed. Proper food storage and cleanliness are required to keep the pests away. If the toddlers in your group were leaving crumbs all around the house that certainly would invite ants and mice into the home. Again I am extremely sorry you had this experience and wish I had been given notice during your stay to resolve the issue immediately. This issue is currently being addressed by a professional.
Our family of seven (two seniors, four thirty-somethings, and one six-month-old) had a fantastic experience at this cottage. The property has the abundant charm of a lakeside cottage that has been loved and cared for by several generations; it's also immaculately clean and well maintained. Its layout -- rooms and a screened porch ranged along the lake - allows for a panoramic lake view from every room. We were able to produce great meals in the kitchen and enjoy them on the dock. Strong WiFi made it easy for us to connect for work calls, Zoom calls, etc. There are lots of recreational options--canoes and kayaks, floats, tennis court-- but the best feature of all is having the magnificent Squam Lake five steps away. Our host was delightful, welcoming, and responsive. Several charming N.H. towns and farmers' markets are within a 5-10 minute drive. This property is a spectacular vacation spot for any family who values the beauty and tranquillity of nature.

About the host
Hosted by Christy Donovan
I love hosting and sharing this beautiful piece of nature with guests. It is relaxing and a great reset from regular busy life.
Why they chose this property
I love getting out on the water and taking walks/hikes with my dogs. I often can be found taking my 3 little dogs and my mom’s dog for a kayak or paddleboard around Kent Island across from our cottage.
What makes this property unique
This property is very unique as it was built extremely close to the water’s edge back in 1938 which could never happen now. You look out your windows and see water! It draws you right in every single time. It is also one of the last authentic cottages that has been left mostly the same as it was many generations ago.
