Located on the Village Green-Commons behind an Historic 1895 Grand Victorian home with a tower and wrap around porch is the original Carriage House. In what was originally the hay loft is a large (guest claim it is much larger than the photos show) 2 bedrooms, 3 queen beds, full kitchen, one bathroom apartment. It has a washer, dryer, dishwasher, air and heat, large closet spaces, WiFi and hard wire internet, TV with Roku connection, and just about anything a business or other guest might need. We are located in the lakes region of New Hampshire at the southwest corner of the White Mountains geologically. We are close to the Dartmouth College community and cultural scene, Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, Mascoma Community Health Center, Cardigan Mountain School, and much outdoor year round recreation.

The Canaan apartment is spacious and clean. The kitchen with gas stove, full size fridge and has enough counter space to cook. Having a washer and dryer in the unit is so convenient. There were plenty of towels and blankets. The apartment is convenient to pizza, gas station/handy stop, Chinese restaurant, post office and hardware store- I walked to everything. The only thing that would make the place better is a TV and maybe a more comfortable sofa. Thank you Mike for a comfortable place to stay. I recommend staying here for New Hampshire activities.

These were great guests. They took care of the apartment and adapted to unusual weather in New Hamshire. Due to unusual ceercumstances I got to know them a bit. I respect them enough to take their constructive suggestions very seriously. I am glad to know about the couch. I have had several guests tell me they were very glad there was no TV. Most, who wanted TV have watched TV on there computers or pads. Only one person has complained about no TV and that was because he wanted his football games on Sundays and didn't do devices and hadn't noticed the no TV warning. Several guest indicated that no TV convinced them to rent. However, I am convinced and I will mount an extra TV I have, and find a good place in the apartment for it.

We found the property easily but we were disappointed at the appearance of the back walkpath, broken screen in the door and blow-up mattress on the floor.as well as General appearance for the price point. The bedrooms had lovely towels to use and there was a washer and dryer in the kitchen with the venting pipe running through the upper level of the living space. It might be a good idea to use the upper level as the 3rd bedroom, with curtained privacy vs the floor.

This place has many, many attributes and renter appreciated things going for it. If the items mentioned by this reviewer are important to you then this is probably not the place for you. This is the first negative review (not 4 or 5 stars) we have had after many years of renting (we are new to HomeAway, this is our first guest from HomeAway). One item is inaccurate however which we would like to correct. There are no blow-up mattresses in the place. All beds are regular (traditional) queen sized mattresses. We do readily admit we were not able to repair the one loose screen before my trip and assumed that it was not needed right away because the air-conditioning was expected to be needed for the entire stay; we are sorry (we apologize to the guest) if they wanted to turn off the AC and preferred the August heat with screens in open windows. The screen has been repaired. The dryer vent is in keeping with the clean and modern feel of the apartment (1895 building with all new interior). It is of course a conservation thing as most of the year in this climate the heat from the dryer vent adds to the heat of the room; this is more comfortable and saves resources. We have had mixed input on the location of the third bed. Because we have lots of room we have choices. Originally the bed was as recommended by this reviewer and we moved it by request of several other guests. If you stay here let me know which way you think would be best. Or if you are going to stay here and can anticipate which configuration you might prefer please let me know before you arrive; we can reconfigure it for your preferences quite easily. We mostly get families who would like to have everyone sleeping on the same level, but we are happy to adapt to your needs. The walkway is the original carriage way for putting a carriage in a Victorian aged dwelling at night. We have been converting the carriage way renovating and improving the walkway for safety in snowy and icy winter weather; we have a year round perspective on such things. We are always improving the interior and exterior look and feel of the place with safety in mind and we have a long way to go in such a large place. However, our intentions are to fully re-landscape the walkway and garden while repainting the back of the house. Many guests prefer to use the alternative access through the top of the garden and then across the bridge where a few cascading day lilies and other flowers are still present until September.

Canaan Village is delightful, this apartment is well located for the farmers market and recreation.
The Northern Rail Trail is just two hundred yards from the apartment and was great for riding bikes and hiking. Fall colors are just starting to show. Local farmers and artisans made the market a delight. We hiked Mt Cardigan and we had easy access to the trail. The meeting house has been recently renovated and the Canaan museum was interesting.
