About this property

Mountains-Gettysburg-Ski-golf--Zoo-Appalach.Trail, DC Baltimore, Nat'l Shrine

Enjoy our our charming stone and shingle cottage perched on the side of a mountain overlooking the Catoctin Mountain Valley for a get away! Only 1 hr. 20 min from DC and Baltimore! Close to Gettysburg (22 minutes) It is also located only 14 minutes from SKI LIBERTY/30 MIN TO WHITETAIL on a country lane in Blue Ridge Summit , Pa. which was founded as a vacation site for nearby DC and Baltimore families. It is 5 miles or so from the famous Camp David. It is less than one mile from the Appalachian Trail and close to Orvis Hill Country Shooting. At the turn of the 20th c. people came from as far away as NY because the train went there. It is located in the area of Lee's retreat and the Battle of Monterey Pass. It is 22 minutes to Gettysburg.. 1/2 hour to Monocacy, and about the same to Sharpsburg and Antietam. !!! The cottage has 2 large bedrooms upstairs(1 king- the other two twins that make a king on the second floor,) and a double bedroom on the first floor. Each bedroom has a bath. There is a living room , kitchen, dining room and small den. The deck is the best part! The large doors looking onto the expanse of the valley are an important feature of the house. Enjoy dining under the umbrella on the deck, sometimes cooking on the small grill. The garden is very relaxing and has a fire pit for chilly evenings. There is also a small outdoor hot tub. The little private lane makes the home a small enchanting estate with the feeling that you are far , far away. It is extremely relaxing .Reading, walk ing up and down the lane, and just hanging are great. If looking for more, go to Gettysburg to the movies and to Hagerstown to the Outlet Malls and amazing antique stores. Among favorite restaurants are the Cash town Inn (gourmet in the country) and the Carriage House in Emmitsburg (best crab cakes anywhere~) Delicious Chinese buffet in Waynesboro. Several golf courses nearby , and trout fishing. G. The Y in Wayneboro has very reasonable short term memberships for gym and pool . The Battle of Monterey Pass and Lee's Retreat from Gettysburg were just around the corner. See North South Magazine, Feb. 27 2010!!! Don't m iss the Catoctin Zoo and the Nat'l Shrine to Saint Eliz. Anne Seton, and Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes (20 min), outlet malls .

Great weekend getaway for a couple or with friends

Had a great stay here! Plenty of room to do your own thing, and enjoy the property, or get together and enjoy the views, scenery, take walks. It was 25 minutes from Gettysburg, so the drive isn’t bad at all, it’s actually pretty scenic! The house was pretty clean, toiletries and towels were abundant, overall it was a pleasant stay and I’d love to get a group of friends back here during spring/fall!

Beyond expectations

We went on a friend’s weekend getaway and couldn’t ask for a better place. House was immaculate and views were gorgeous. Beds were very comfy. (Which was important for us old folks!) We are already talking about our next trip to Gettysburg and staying in this fabulous place. Thank you so much for everything.

Family week on Blue Ridge

Great location. We visited DC, Harpers Ferry, and Gettysburg while we were here. This was a great time to spend with the family. The cottage was clean and the view was beautiful. We had a relaxing week and will highly consider coming back the next time we want to visit the area. Thanks Susan!

Beautiful home!

This is an older, beautiful house! However, the housekeeping and maintence could use some work. It needs lots of TLC inside and out, however very comfortable. The host was great to work with and met our every need. ourevery need with ease.

Good place with a great view!

It was very roomy and definitely had a homey feel to it. Every bedroom had its own bathroom so everyone wasn't sharing which was good when you travel with four children. The kids loved playing in the hot tub! The wifi didn't work very well thou. Was very slow but all in all an excellent stay.

Quirky Cottage with a Great View

We enjoyed our stay! The view was lovely and relaxing. The kitchen was well equipped. The house is older, well loved and well-worn, spacious, and has some quirky features and oddities. It is great for family retreats. The internet was strong enough for connecting for processing files, but did have some difficulty supporting video meetings. The cellular reception was very strong.

Great views, cozy, close to Skiing

Our Family of 4 (2 teenage girls) rented this house for a weekend away to ski and relax. Positives: The views from the family room and the 2 bedrooms upstairs were spectacular; The wood burning fireplace was very cozy and a great place to hang out after a long day of skiing; The hot tub was nice too! A few notes - the kitchen and common areas were a bit cluttered which made it hard to find counterspace to cook, room to store our groceries and a place to store our winter gear.

Stupendous location but a dirty home

The location of the home is 2nd to none! The views of the mountains are amazing! The home is tired and the cleaning is abysmal. We had to clean immediately when we arrived. The bathrooms were fine, but the kitchen wasn't clean and the windows were obnoxious. The owner was gracious and easy to work with. She does need to shift cleaners immediately. This property is too beautiful not to be honored and respected.

Gettysburg weekend

This property was amazing. Everything about it exceeded all of my expectations. My family and I felt right at home in this cozy cottage. The view from the patio was spectacular. The location was quiet and serene. The few neighbors that we ran into were very friendly. A short 30 minute scenic drive to Gettysburg made this the perfect location for relaxing after a busy day of sightseeing. Would definitely stay again

The best view!

You cannot beat the outdoor space at this cottage!! The view from the deck of the mountains is spectacular and the side lawn with fire pit has comfortable furniture and still the great view. If you do need to stay inside, we recommend opening up all the doors and windows for a while to air it out.

Home away from home

This was my 2nd stay at this lovely home, with the best view in all of Pennsylvania! I’ve been a guest in the middle of winter and just last week in warm weather. Not being a fan of the heat as I age, I preferred wintertime with the hot tub looking out over the stunning view, plus we always had a roaring, yet cozy wood fire! The home is much larger than photos can convey! This is the place to go if you appreciate peace and quiet, enjoying mimosas on the deck, watching the sunset over the huge mountain tops! Perfect place to celebrate our 40th anniversary with friends. The only problem is when I have to leave! Thank you Susan for another delightful vacation! Regards, Claire

Enchanting view

This home in a quiet hillside had a stunning view of the hills below and Maryland beyond. We had a nice reunion with family. Only issue was that the house has a few rooms that are a bit dusty for my allergies. Other than that wonderful stay!!

Beautiful home and view

This house was spectacular! My business used this property to house 7 workers for a project in Taneytown for 2 months. There was plenty of bathrooms and beds for everyone (no beds were shared). I have so many pictures of the awesome view over the mountain from the fire pit. Susan was so kind and helpful with everything. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a beautiful home with a breathtaking view! Lindsey

Amazing Views

A very beautiful stone house that sits atop a beautiful mountain ridge. This is a family vacation house and has a very nice fireplace with amazing views from the back patio. We had a great time and it was very quiet and secluded. There is a train that comes by at night that is very close to the house, but it did not bother us one bit.

Loved it!

We had an amazing time staying here! We have 2 older teens and there was plenty of room for us all to enjoy time together and still have our separate spaces. Everything was clean and comfortable and the location was perfect for day trips to DC and battlefields. We enjoyed the games that were provided and the history of the area. Being from south Texas, the scenery and temperatures were a welcome change and we would love to visit again someday.

A lovely spring trip for hangin’ out and hikes nearby

This sweet place provided a wonderful get away for three friends reuniting for a few days. With three bedrooms and bathrooms, each set up sorta like suites gave us each our quiet and private space. Each room/suite would be perfectly comfortable for a couple as well. The master bedroom upstairs has a fabulous view of the mountains and lots of airy windows. The space in this fairly small house is well laid out.... the one slight challenge for some may be the spiral stairs up to the master bedroom; we had no problem with is. But it affords for a good size and quite comfortable living room as well as separate “library/TV” room. The owners have put a lot of attention into their decorating of the house...comfy couches and chairs, formal dining room as well as a kitchen eating area that can easily fit 4-6. The fabrics on upholstery and pillows have been carefully selected and quaint. The porch, while a bit rough, is delightful to sit out and look over the mountains. The house must be a get away for the owners too as much of their personal belongings are there in closets and cabinets but it also felt perfectly comfortable to share their space. We were there very early spring so plant life was just beginning to show it’s glory. The side yard is welcoming and flat while the rest is a steep slope. What was a surprise and plus for us was a train track just across the street (opposite the Mountain View side). No, it’s not noisy! The train only comes by a couple times a day and goes so slowly as it winds its way around the mountain that it’s noise is more soothing than bothersome. I loved it! The owner is really very responsive and attentive to her guests having an enjoyable stay. We appreciated her tips for outings in the area and info about the local history. We didn’t know much about that particular area ahead of time. I’d like to go back, stay here again and explore the area some more.

Charming

The scenery was so beautiful. It was a little too chilly to use the fire pit the time we were there but had a blast. My 3 & 4 year olds loved taking walks and seeing the trains pass through ( they never disturbed sleep). House was stocked w a brand new lodge cast iron and everything you needed to cook dinner. Such a Cute place. Will definitely be back!
