Combe Claire
We spent around 11 months excitedly awaiting our family holiday at Combe Claire. The months, weeks, days and then hours were religiously counted down. We visited and re-visited the website and poured over the photgraphs. This was our first proper holiday in three years and we wanted a luxurious, child-friendly, home-from-home.
As we manouevred the hire-car up the narrow country road towards the little hamlet beyond which Combe Claire is situated we collectively held our breaths - surely this house cannot be as good as all the reviews seem to suggest.
The road to the hamlet of Escamp winds up the valley offering a view of the impressive twin gables of the house. This first glimpse of Combe Claire provides just the merest hint of what lies within.
The property is a spacious open-plan design, yet there is also plenty of privacy. The presentation is immaculate. Everything from the design of the building, to the materials, to the furnishings to the fittings appears to have been agonised over. No corners have been cut. To say the house is well-equipped would be a gross understatement.
We travelled with two small children (1 and 4). It is not the obvious things like the swimming pool or the sleigh cot that set this apart as a holiday home for children, It's the little touches like kids' cutlery/crockery, toys and games. (And CBeebies on the satellite TV provided some valuable chill-out time after a hard day's running about daft.)
To list everything that impressed would risk running out of superlatives but here is a list of five of the major plus points-
1. Location - combines the remoteness of the rural Perigord Noir with a 10 min drive to the nearest supermarket. Perfect location for visiting all the local tourist attractions.
2. Outside space - the pool is top-notch. There's also plenty of room for kids running about. The vegetable patch is well worth a visit. The views over the valley are stunning. The giant BBQ will make the kitchen redundant in the summer.
3. Inside facilties - beyond even our high expectations. Don't take the website photos for granted. This place is even better in the flesh.
4. The little touches - the extra fridge for all your wine/beer purchases, the plethora of guide books and novels, the wifi access, the air-con etc.
5. The owner - Farah has put so much effort and passion into this property. Her enthusiasm and attention to detail were part of the pleasure of holidaying at Combe Claire.
