About this property

A Modern House in a Large Nature Reserve in Ligonier Valley!

The still shots just don't do the place the justice it deserves! Sugar Tree Lodge is the perfect spot for your upcoming family reunion, friendly get together, family retreat, or even wedding!

Located in the resort mountains of western Pennsylvania, only 54 miles east of downtown Pittsburgh, Sugar Tree Lodge is the perfect place to be whenever you want to enter the natural world of forest and stream, but at the same time want to reside in a beautiful and comfortable home close to resort attractions such as Seven Springs, Hidden Valley, Laurel Mountain Ski Resort, and Idlewild Park.

Surrounding Sugar Tree Lodge's property, the Randall Reserve is dedicated to the preservation of woodlands and wildlife in the valley between Ligonier and Donegal, to the end that current and future generations may continue to experience the natural legacy of this lovely part of the Laurel Highlands. Any wildlife that can survive in this part of the country appears from time to time, leaving tracks and signs of their presence. Many varieties of wildflowers, shrubs and trees are to be found here. A network of trails on the Randall Reserve surrounding the property connects all of this together, taking you back to Sugar Tree Lodge where you can relax in comfort.

On site there is a pond to enjoy fishing and small boating, more than a mile of Four Mile Run (the major creek and trout stream in this area) to explore and enjoy, and miles of trails for hiking, biking, and cross-country skiing, a game court for family enjoyment, volleyball and badminton, picnics and bonfires. Just around the corner is beautiful Donegal Lake, a Pennsylvania public area which offers fishing, kayaking, canoeing and small boating (on a bring-your-own basis).

You may want to visit some of the famous places in the Laurel Highlands around us:

Idlewilde Park (voted the #1 amusement park for children in the United States) which has Soak Zone and Story Book Forest and many other rides and amusements.

We are less than a 30-minute drive to all three of the local ski resorts. Laurel Mountain, Hidden Valley, and Seven Springs each offer their own challenges on the slopes and other amenities like golf, snow tubing, sporting clay shooting, and much more.

Nearby Ohiopyle State Park has miles of trails and whitewater rafting opportunities. Let us not forget the amazing fishing and fly fishing in the area creeks and streams.

Frank Lloyd Wright's 'Fallingwater' and 'Kentuck Knob' are world renowned for their architectural accomplishments. Both sites have daily tours available.

If you are a history buff, Flight 93 Memorial will touch your heart and the town of Ligonier has Fort Ligonier with its amazing historical reproductions of life in Revolutionary War times.

A short drive will take you to the Laurel Caverns where you can tour the beautiful subterranean caves and streams.

The list goes on seemingly forever...

If all the action isn't your speed bring along a book or two and your favorite drink and just enjoy the peace and comfort of the lodge itself. It is hard to imagine a more restful and satisfying vacation.

THE HOUSE:

Sugar Tree's first floor features an open floor plan that includes the living room, dining room and kitchen. There's a wood-burning fireplace as well as floor-to-ceiling glass doors that open onto a large deck overlooking the pond, allowing you to combine indoor and outdoor living and dining at the same time. (Great for get-togethers!). In addition, our back entrance room contains washer and dryer for your use and a half-bath.

The master bedroom suite has its own wing, a king bed, 1 and 1/2 baths, a private tea-for-two deck, and an adjacent smaller room with a single bed.

The 2nd floor has a den with TV and a queen bed, a bunk room with 6 beds, and two additional rooms ( King and Queen), a card table nook, and two full bathrooms.

The attached annex over the garage is a multi-purpose room with a queen bed and a single bed, a full bath and a narrow deck that overlooks the pond. This annex will be available for use during all times of year and includes its own heating and air conditioning.

Our yard has a large and a small bonfire pit, a picnic area, a set-up for soccer and badminton, a games court containing shuffleboard, horseshoes, and basketball hoops. There's a dock and rowboat for the pond.

The Four Mile Run (a creek), the preeminent trout fishing stream in southern Ligonier Valley, delineates the lower yard and supplies shallow water fun for small children plus exploration and fishing for older children and adults.

Love this place

We had our wedding here in 2021 and have been back every year since. It’s kind of like a mini family reunion to kick off the summer for us! Everyone loves it here. There is so much to do you can’t pack it in to the four days we usually have here. They provide everything you could possibly need.

Amazing Retreat

We have a group of close knit families (15 people) and we go on a yearly vacation together. It’s always a challenge to find a place that has what we’re looking for- a comfortable place with plenty of room where we can both enjoy each others’ company and the outdoors. Where we can cook for our large group, where the kiddos can do their thing while the adults hang out. And one that also offers some unique elements to enjoy. Sugar Tree Lodge was all that and more. It made jour vacation both uncomplicated and special. We can’t wait to come back next year!

Another great trip!

This is our fifth year returning to sugar tree lodge. Corinne was great to work with as usual. She promptly replies to any questions and kindly helped us out late one night. The owners take great care of the property and something new seems to be updated each year. Our children loved the new Teepee, which was the perfect spot to roast marshmallows on a rainy day. We hope to come back again next year! Thanks again!

A hidden gem

Our family of 12, that includes two small children, had another lovely stay at Sugartree lodge. Corinne and Darren are both so kind a take great care of the property. There always seems to be an improvement each year that we return. Newest additions include a large blackstone grill and loads of new toys that our two children thoroughly enjoyed! The property is extremely kid friendly and they have cribs, pack and plays and loads of indoor and outdoor toys. We have lots of coffee drinkers in our group who appreciate having both the ninja coffee maker and a keurig. The pantry is stocked with tons of serving dishes and several crock pots which we love since we typically cook all our meals at the house! Thanks for another memorable trip!

Nice spot for family vacation

We had a very enjoyable family vacation at the house. The house sits beautifully surrounded by nature with a view of the pond. The kitchen’s huge island was perfect for preparing meals for 14 adults. No problem having more than one chef in the kitchen. I would recommend bringing any specialty kitchen items you may need. There is an extra refrigerator/freezer in the garage. The house itself is comfortable and the mattresses were very good. There are some minor repairs that would be helpful but did not affect our stay. We enjoyed cooling off in the pond. We spent a lot of time on our inflatable floats that we brought with us. Corinne was quick to respond back with questions we had prior to our stay. Thanks for sharing your property with us.

Will return again

This is our second year at this wonderful house. My group is a large group of high school friends who live in many places around the country. We love this house and the beautiful surroundings! The kitchen is where we usually congregate, as the island is huge and seats many. The living room and dining room table also offer large groups places to play games, eat and talk. The weather was fantastic this year, so we got out the fishing poles and even took the row boat out. The trails surrounding the house are gorgeous and we always have a group hike scheduled. There is plenty of room to sleep and many bathrooms so everyone can get showered and ready easily. We will be back again next year!

Bedroom with pull out couch

Upstairs bedroom has a pullout couch. Absolutely horrible sleeping arrangement. Couch is not adequate for any human being to sleep on. Floor is more comfortable than the pull out couch. Would not rent again unless this bedroom provided a proper sleeping accommodation. Strongly advise to remove the couch and replace with a new bed with a new mattress at least in queen size if not king size.

The house is gorgeous and has so much space!

My experience staying at the Harris House was amazing. We had great communication with the Manager of the house and the other staff. This house had plenty of rooms to stay in and a beautiful fireplace right in the center of the first floor. The landscaping around the house was perfect also because it just fit well with the natural surroundings. The fully stocked kitchen made it really easy to make meals and with the amount of space in the fridge and freezer, there was plenty of room for any food that is brought up there. The house was also very easy to find which was a plus since I'm not from the area. The house was very clean and well-maintained. You could tell that the management took great pride in the house! My friends and I were so pleased with our stay there that we have already started to plan another trip up to the house! With only a 20-25 minute drive from Seven Springs and Falling Waters not far either, there is definitely a lot of activities to. We can't wait to come back when the weather is warmer so that we can use the outdoor activities that they house provides such as the basketball court and volleyball net, horseshoes, and the firepits! Overall, I would highly recommend this house to any large group for either a weekend or week trip! You definitely get your moneys worth out of this location and the views from anywhere in or outside of the house are spectacular!

Graduation Get Together

We booked the Harris House for a weekend to hold my daughter's graduation family/friends gathering. It's a beautiful area set apart from the hustle and bustle. She absolutely loved it..well, we all did. The kids enjoyed the basketball, fishing, the boat, and visiting the horses. Our fellas met the challenge after the rain to start a nice pit fire. Little did we know, they found dry wood..cheaters! We had plenty of room to sleep our family that stayed over after the party. (8 adults, 6 kids) My son took over the media room with the television in it :) while my daughter enjoyed the nook room with a half bath connected to our master. My in laws all mentioned that the beds were heavenly soft. They were nice to fall into after a long day. Not only is the home absolutely beautiful as well as the surroundings, but fully equipped with just about everything you could need. Just bring along your necessities, and everything else is covered. Lots of room even when it started to rain, there was space for everyone to be comfortable inside. Everyone has raved about how fabulous the house was, what a wonderful party, and that of course we have to plan a return trip just to enjoy the place without festivities going on. It would be wonderful to just relax, find a cozy spot with a cup of coffee and a book. We look forward to our return visit. Everyone we dealt with were so very helpful and accommodating. I can't say enough. Thank you for letting us enjoy your home for our gathering. The Williams Family

Our family ranged from 2 years old to 75. We had a very nice time. The kids spent a lot of time out on the lake/pond fishing & kayaking. We played a lot of volleyball & went on lots of hikes. We saw a number of deer & really enjoyed spending time in nature. The main house was adequately stocked with everything you need — kitchen supplies, spices, bath towels, toilet paper, bedding. There were 2 cribs which were great for the little one.The house is in fine shape. The bonus room above the garage smelled like the garage. I suspect gas/chemical fumes from the garage have permeated through the garage ceiling making it seem pretty hazardous to sleep in that room. We ended up moving the kids from the bonus room to the main house living room as a precaution.

Our Annual Family Vacation Place

I believe this past June was our fourth annual family vacation here; and we booked for next summer again.Obviously, we love this house and gorgeous surroundings. The remoteness and quiet suit us. The house is always spotless and we love to cook, so the big kitchen accommodates us. Corrine is very responsive and check in is a breeze. The kayaks and fishing are a big draw for our teens and all ages play shuffleboard, and corn hole games. We happened to hit the extreme hot spell yet the house was comfortable and upstairs fans/with window ac conditioners keep the air moving nicely. Even though it is remote, grocery stores and markets and restaurants are easily accessible.

Scenic vacation home

The layout of the rustic home is very comfortable and lends itself to having people together and still offering privacy. The kitchen is well stocked; the beds and pillows are comfortable. It was very cold and rainy when we visited. But, we enjoyed a fire and worked on a puzzle we found at the house while being surrounded by the beautiful views, which made it a relaxing weekend getaway. Thank you!

Amazing

The house was perfect! It has literally anything you could ask for. Comfy beds, lots of pillows and extra blankets. Kitchen made for a catering crew. It's absolutely quiet. We did not get to use the teepee due to extreme cold but everyone wanted to. There are baby gates, cribs, high hairs, games galore for children and adults. Surrounding are beautiful. We bought 2 dogs that loved running on the huge property. We asked for firewood to be provided and it was Right by the door, dry, and plenty to keep the fireplace going for 4 straight days. Owner was great at communication and flexible with arrangements. Highly recommend. Some guests from our group are planning on using the property in the future of their own things as well.

Another amazing stay at Sugar Tree Lodge!

This was our family's second time staying at this wonderful property and it was just as amazing as the first time. The house is large, open, and inviting, with the kitchen especially nice and the surrounding grounds, pond, and woods beautiful. It was simply an ideal place to relax and unwind. The perfect family vacation. So perfect that we've already booked the house for next year!

A Family Tradition

This was our 3rd stay at the Randall Reserve and we already booked next year. The house is private, very clean, spacious, comfortable, and a lovely scenic place to relax. Every year on the last day of our stay, we discuss, as a family, the pros and cons and consider if we want to stay here the following year and my family had all "pros" and definitely want to return next summer. We love the kayaks and fishing on the pond and this year, we took advantage of some of the local places for miniature golf, bowling and more.

About the host

Hosted by Corinne Vanderzee

Host profile image
Corinne and Darren Vanderzee, manage the property, run the website and contact the guests. Tom D., a friendly nice guy, is greeter and local manager. The R. family manages maintenance and cleaning. All have homes adjacent to the property and are available to help you at all times. Tom lives in a guest house across the pond and is filled with visions for the development of the property.

Although we expect to keep improving Sugar Tree every year, we believe that, right now, you can have a great time in our forest wonderland.

Why they chose this property

Around 1960 a lady named Belle and her husband set foot on a property that had a sparkling pond, a cottage, a hundred acres or so of Pennsylvania hardwood forest, and flowering weeds almost 5 to 6 feet high.

They looked at each other and bought the place on the spot. That property is now Sugar Tree Lodge, a love at first sight that never ends. They built the house to last, using steel framework and a steel roof. (Look at that roof today, recently painted and good as new!). Over the years nearby lands were added, much of which eventually became the Randall Reserve.
