About this property

Sonoma Country Cottage, On 50 Acre Ranch - Big Views, A Magical Spot.

Charming, quaint & clean rural retreat. Once a mid-1800 bunk house, this little cottage was lovingly restored and is a wonderful place to stay in the heart of Wine Country. Just 14 miles from the Sonoma Town Square, 10 mins to downtown Petaluma, Point Reyes National Park 40 mins and 1- 1:15 hours from major airports...

Located just off a country road, adjacent to hundreds of acres of beautiful, open ranch land. Wonderful sunrise and sunset views. Recreation outside your doorstep includes hiking, biking, amongst other options. The road riding from here is extraordinary - some of the best in the country. Hiking on the road through the property, or up this dead-end country lane, many active choices.

A room with a view...a great full-size bed with comfy linens…looking out french doors into an oak forest. Furnished with a love seat, outdoor seating area, claw foot tub, free WiFi, and fine coffee for your morning - this place is quality and comfort.
It is a simple place - no TV or AC... 12 years here in Petaluma I have only wanted AC one or two nights, it cools down almost every night. This is a small dedicated guest house, and not a room in my house for rent, set up like one of the best hotels I have enjoyed. See you soon I hope.

County of Sonoma also requires the following: TOT Certificate #1425N, max guests = 2 (unless you have pets or little kids or others that we have pre-approved) and max parking = 1 car... and lastly and I like this one... quite hours are from 10 pm to 7 am

Beautiful, peaceful surroundings.

We stayed here for five nights in November 2015. The studio was tiny, with no television or kitchen, but we were allowed to use a small kitchen just steps away in a house on the property. We didn't mind not having a television; we were busy and out a lot, and had our computers for keeping in touch and entertainment. The wifi worked just fine. I was happy to see a couple of cats nearby when we woke up the first day, and loved walking up the road and seeing/taking photos of the cows and the beautiful scenery. There was a small refrigerator and a Keurig type coffee maker. The bathroom was very cute, with a claw foot tub, which had a shower that worked well (being in California, we were definitely more conscious of our water use). My only complaint about the bathroom was the lighting, which was terrible for applying makeup (mirrors and light were in opposite areas). My husband's only complaint was that the bed was uncomfortable. We were in Petaluma to visit family, and enjoyed going to Point Reyes Beach and the Armstrong Redwoods. A couple of the restaurants we liked in Petaluma were Central Market and Seared. A place I would highly advise against was the Stumptown Grill/Brewery. I left my entire lunch on the table....just awful. The highlight of the 50 Acre Ranch we stayed on was definitely the open space and the cattle :-)

Relaxing Stay

My wife and I stayed at this rental 3 years ago and we had such fond memories of our relaxing trip that we came back again. It was just as nice as we remembered. The cottage is the perfect size for the two of us and our small dog and the setting up on a hill overlooking nothing but farms and green trees is a welcome escape from city life. It’s just a short drive down the road to nice restaurants in Petaluma and also a convenient location to visit wine country or go out to the coast.

Ranch Bunk House

The property was exactly as described..perfect relaxed out of the way location yet accessable to visit both Senoma and Napa or go to the coast by Bodega Bay/Dillon Beach. Petaluma restaurants are only minutes away. So glad we chose Nick's place and not the typical wine country touristy lodging.

Petaluma Ranch Living

We enjoyed the quiet and comfort of the ranch cottage and it's proximity to wineries, brew pubs, and town. Our dog was able to figure out the cattle guards for the walk up the road for the expansive views of the valley and beyond. The cows in the road added to our country experience. Nick was a gracious and responsive host. We recommend the cottage for your visit to the Sonoma area. Note: the refrigerator is small (think dorm room size), and there are no facilities or utensils for eating on site (except the gas grill). We solved this by getting take out from the Petaluma Market and there were no concerns.

Lovely little spot for the price

I didn’t really know the layout of the area prior to visiting, and had I actually looked at a map, I might have aimed for something closer to town. But I am so glad I did not. You feel like you’re in a remote, serene location out in the middle of nowhere, but you’re really just a mile up a paved country road. The land on the way in is stunning, and makes for a really lovely sunsets. The accommodation of the small unit that we stayed in was good. It’s very minimal, the fridge could be a little bigger, I always prefer a queen bed (it's a full), but that’s nitpicking, it’s an excellent space, And actually a really nice shower head. We were definitely jealous of the much bigger (and more expensive) unit's deck view, but we were able to obtain the same view with a 30 yard walk. Lyft came to get us within 15 minutes on two occasions, which was crucial, as the wine was flowing... :) Outstanding deal for the price.

Beautiful location, lovely cottage, very nice owner!

The cottage was pristine & beautifully restored. The location had lovely views. The host was very personable & accommodating. It was hot during our stay & he brought us a fan. There was a movie shooting on his property and it didn't bother us but he refunded one nights stay. Most of all, this great property was welcoming to our 3 small/medium dogs for a small fee. It's so hard to find pet friendly lodging reasonably priced in this area. Loved our stay. Definitely recommend!!

Quaint, peaceful, perfect....

A clean, well lighted place. This adorable cottage was home base for us as we ventured around Petaluma, Point Reyes, Bodega Bay, Sonoma, and Napa. Nestled up on a green farm, but not too far from town, this cottage was a relaxing retreat after a day of exploring. It was so perfect we extended our stay an extra night. A big thank you to Nicholas, our friendly host. We hope to return soon!

Beautiful, quiet, serene cottage

My husband and I spent a delightful Thanksgiving in the cottage. It was perfectly situated near downtown Petaluma. What a wonderful place to stay to unwind from hectic work lives and feel grateful for all of the good in our lives!. Nicholas provided everything we could have needed. We will definitely return.

Quiet and clean.

What an incredible weekend! The views of the city lights and the stars were beautiful. The place was well maintained and exceptionally clean. Waiting for us were cows walking the path behind the cottage. Deer walking through the front patio area. Such a quiet and serene location within minutes away from downtown Petaluma. The night noises of crickets chirping, cows mooing quietly, an occasional rooster to remind us we were on a farm. Nick gave great information on places to explore as well as favorite places to enjoy any meal of the day. Definitely would make a return trip as soon as possible. Thank you!!

A beautiful start to our holiday

We had a lovely two nights at this cottage! It is small but spacious, clean and well kept. The only down fall my husband found was there wasn't a television and he couldn't watch the American League series! Our host was good. He left us a note on how to contact him and otherwise left us on our own. We did chat with him one morning and he offered to get us fresh eggs to enjoy as well he gave us suggestions on where to eat. There isn't a kitchen or microwave but you can go next door and use what is there. It is a bit of a drive into Sonoma- about 20 minutes. Petaluma is about 10 minutes to drive to. The bathroom light works through motion so if you are an early bird like me you might end up in the dark while showering! The quick fix to that was moving my arm outside of the curtain! It wasn't a problem at all- just a little startling! As for the views- breathtaking. We had deer to view both at dawn and at dusk. If you want a quaint cottage in the country you won't be disappointed!

Heavenly

We loved everything about staying at this ranch property! The cabin itself was very comfortable, with nice linens, a great claw-foot soaking tub, and coffee for the morning. We enjoyed sitting on the porch, watching the sunset and listening to the wind. Nick was very easy to communicate with, even though we never met him (he was out of town during our stay). He allowed us to use the laundry in one of the out buildings, and also to cook breakfast in the kitchen attached to his office. We even got to eat some eggs fresh out of the "Coop deVille" on the property. I didn't even mind being woken by the roosters each morning! We loved exploring Petaluma as well. Lagunitas Brewery is very easy to get to from the ranch, and well worth visiting. We dined at Wild Goat Bistro, which was friendly with good food, and also toured the Adobe State Park. We would have loved to have stayed longer, but we had to move on. We would for sure go back and stay again, anytime we were near Petaluma! Highly recommended.

Secluded Beauty Close to Town

My husband and I stayed in the cottage for our 10th wedding anniversary. The cottage itself was really cool, I loved that it was a converted bunkhouse. The hardwood floors and claw foot tub were awesome bonus features. The views were beautiful and the whole atmosphere of the ranch was relaxing. Nick is very helpful when you need him, quick to respond, and extremely personable. Petaluma is just about a ten minute or less drive away, we never felt it was too much to drive anywhere we needed/wanted to go. One thing of note, the unit doesnt have AC, which we didn't really find to be a problem. It cools down nicely when the sun sets, and all the windows create a nice cross breeze. All in all, we really loved our stay there and have already said we would love to go back! Highly recommend it to friends, family or anyone wanting a very nice escape!

Perfect Wine Country Retreat!

Serene gem of a cottage! Very bright and clean -- just as pictured. Views of green rolling hills wherever you look. Close enough to downtown Petaluma (must try Wishbone restaurant!) but far enough away that you're surrounded by nature. Bring your bikes to explore the country roads. All towels, duvet, sheets, and shampoo were provided. Keurig coffee maker and minifridge. The owner was very friendly and helpful. Thank you!!

Peaceful retreat

Couldn't ask for a more beautiful, peaceful view. My husband and I loved our stay here - gave us a chance to unplug from our busy lives and just enjoy the simple things in life. To be fair, there were a couple things I will critique. 1) the bath towels and washcloths had a musty smell to them - a little disconcerting since they are reused by guests. I realize the septic system needs to be treated with care and the owner doesn't want to put any harsh chemicals down the drain... However, there are environmentally friendly options out there. 2) the only lighting in the main room is two somewhat dim overhead fixtures that are controlled by a switch near the front entrance. Trying to read at night was near impossible because it was so dim. I recommend having a few lamps, particularly by the bed. I would stay here again in half a heartbeat...It really is a gorgeous property. These are just a few small things that would make it even better.

Peaceful simple and exactly what we were looking for

This little cottage was perfect for my husband and I and Nicolas was a wonderful host. It's very scenic and was so peaceful...a great little getaway. It's located close to downtown Petaluma but far enough away to get away from it all. We went exploring everywhere while there. I would have to recommend the Wild Goat Cafe...best gourmet pizza I've ever had! Ernie's tin roof was a great little spot for a few beers and Lagunitas Brewery was only a few miles from the cottage. Sonoma is only about a 15 min drive to all the wineries if that's what your looking for and the town of Petaluma is adorable. The cottage is nestled on a cute little farm, and the bed was very comfortable. I would defiantly recommend staying here if your not in to having to have all the amenities but a truely different and peaceful experience. Thanks Nick!

A Handy Retreat

A fantastic little spot on a huge sprawling property. Comfortable and quiet. We felt "away from it all", and yet just a quick jaunt into town when we needed. Nick was really entertaining with his enthusiasm for how he set the place up, and he pointed out several natural wonders, as well as great recommendations for eating and such (Topsy's!).

Peaceful and Quiet

I had an incredible time staying at the bunk house. It was charming and comfortable. Nick was helpful, informative, and organized. When he could not be there, his staff was just as helpful and fun. I liked being able to take walks and see the countryside. Most special for me was enjoying the evenings and mornings. I was a happy camper waking to the sunlight and open windows! The cows serenaded me in the mornings; the rooster and birds and baby chicks made me smile! I could easily make this my forever "bunk house" when I come to Petaluma to visit my grandbabies.

About the host

Hosted by Nicholas Freedman

Host profile image
Grew up in NYC, moved to CA first with Vanity Fair Magazine, then I ran media rep firm specializing in health and wellness and outdoor sport. Backpacker, Climbing, Runner's Word and Bicycling were my best clients. I am a committed father raising two on my own, media professional, sales animal... a city boy moved to the country. Now a rancher and host, learning to keep animals and a large ranch while staying fit and enjoying this paradise of Sonoma.

Why they chose this property

Found this place on my favorite lunch bike ride. Chance favors the prepared and I was ready to jump - this place had not changed hands in 70 years. All my neighbors are 4 generation ranches - I totally lucked out. The place was a mess, and polished up so well - now with working barns from the 1800, a 1920 granny unit that is my office, outbuildings and a fully renovated farmhouse... and the bunkhouse I am renting to you I hope... the place is a dream come true. It has so many things I love, old barns, cool forests, rock walls, owls, big views, wildflowers, all sorts of critters, spring water... and so much more..

What makes this property unique

Out in the country and so close to town - great meals near and yet here tucked away it is so quiet and beautiful - seeing the landscape change as the hay is cut on the next hill, the grapes going down the road, friendly neighbors always waving - many nights I hear the owls hooting. I pick and eat from the orchard and my garden... eating my own chickens eggs. Work out - just walk up the dead end and from the top see San Fran and the bay. Washer and Dryer (and a pinch a kitchen) may be made available to you for your stay - just ask.
