Perched above the stone arch entrance of Montreat, Hangin' Round is a unique rondette-style home that features gathering spaces on three levels, 3 bedrooms, 3.5 baths, multiple dens, a recreation room with a wet-bar area, and lots of deck space to take in the seasonal views. Groups will have plenty of space to enjoy time together, as well as areas for solo downtime!

Upgraded in 2025 with new lighting, the interior is open and equipped with hardwood floors, new air purifiers, standing fans, and hand vacuums on each level. Local and vintage art and furnishings enhance the cozy, cottage charm of this sustainable home built by Asheville's Deltec in 1976. The home offers a peaceful setting, surrounded by native trees, distant mountain views, star-filled night skies, and beautiful colors at sunrise and sunset.

Guests are steps away from walking paths, Montreat College, and Montreat Conference Center activities, and downtown Black Mountain (home to coffee shops, bakeries, and restaurants to suit all tastes) is within a 7-minute drive. Whether you're looking for adventure or a peaceful escape, Hangin' Round will feel like a breath of fresh mountain air!

Where to Unwind

Main Entry Level
The entrance is level with the parking area, and it has everything needed for a comfortable, all-on-one-level stay.

• Fully stocked with plates, glasses, utensils, and cookware to host family gatherings. Coffee and tea bar with Nespresso and drip coffee machines, dishwasher, air fryer, blender, and other appliances make it easy to stay home.
• Interior dining area with seating for 8.
• Living room faces the forest outside and offers a mounted TV (cable + streaming), a gas fireplace, a large Bluetooth stereo speaker for streaming music, and access to the deck with outdoor dining for 6 and a Weber gas grill.
• Primary bedroom off a private hallway with a king-size bed and en suite bathroom with a walk-in shower can be closed off for extra privacy.

Middle Level
Levels two and three are easily accessed inside by spiral stairs or outside via adjoining steps connecting the outer decks.

• Den with an electric fireplace, a TV (cable + streaming), a sleeper sofa, and a curated book selection for every generation.
• Adjoining flex space outfitted with a stand-up work desk taking advantage of views, plus yoga mats, exercise bands, and balls with space to stretch out inside or on the deck.
• Bedroom with a bunk bed (queen-size bed on bottom and full-size bed on top). There are extra clip-on lights surrounding each bed.
• Bedroom with a new king-size bed and one of the nicest views.
• Shared full hall bathroom with bathtub and shower combination
• Remodeled laundry room with a new LG stackable washer/dryer, folding area, and toilet with sink.
• Deck with a new outdoor porch swing for slow mornings and relaxing evenings.

• Recreation room with panoramic windows to take in the surrounding forest, a mounted TV (cable + streaming), a game table that can be extended to accommodate 6 (with board games, playing cards, poker chips, chess, and more), a futon and sleeper sofa to accommodate extra guests, an electronic keyboard, and a kitchenette with a refrigerator, sink, microwave, and non-breakable dishes in cabinets.

Beautiful nicely appointed house with incredible overlook

House was comfortable and well stocked. Note that you will have to use spiral staircases between floors or use outside stairs- which worked fine for us but may not for all. The view across the valley to the east and down the Swannanoa gap is incredible- especially before the trees leaf out.

Beds are comfortable and towels plush. Circular stairways require careful navigation. Labeling/instructions for the various TV remotes would be helpful. Two parking spots worked for us, but parking would be difficult if there were more than two vehicles.

Thanksgiving in Montreat

Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: Hanging Round has many wonderful qualities. The views from the decks are amazing! The layout is great for large gatherings (we had 12 people there for Thanksgiving dessert and games) as well as privacy (5 adults and 1 child had enough space and privacy to feel comfortable and homey). The unique furnishings make the home feel extra special. The well appointed kitchen had ample space for cooking. One area for improvement...parking. While there is a level parking pad, the curb and drop off were too extreme for our cars to be able to pull in. We had to park on the street to avoid damaging our cars. Overall, we loved Hanging Round. The location is wonderful, just a 5 minute drive to the unique shops and cafes in Black Mountain and 20 minutes to downtown Asheville. We also enjoyed the natural setting, hiking along Flat Creek up to Montreat College and taking a trip over the pass to hike up the trail to Catawba Falls. A few notes on the management company: Our property was last cleaned 10 days prior to our arrival yet they wanted an additional $50 to check-in 3 hours early, seems rather severe. Also, the bedrooms seemed a bit dusty, they could have sent a cleaning crew in to dust prior to a new guest arrival. They boast that there is a level parking pad, but cars cannot use it, only higher clearance vehicles can access it without damaging the vehicles.

The beds were as advertised. We we there with my sister and her husband, niece and her husband. Six adults total. The advertisement had beds listed as king, queen and full (one each). It was a king and two full beds. This made it very uncomfortable sleep situation for two couples. Main floor fireplace did not work.

Spiral staircase very steep but good space if not an issue

The deck on the main level was great. One of the people in our group had just hurt his knee and wasn't able to go to other levels of the house. The spiral staircase is extremely small and steep, so anyone with mobility issues will want to pass on this one. The main level has the king bed and full bath. The second level has 2 queen beds and one shared full bath (all on the small side). There is also a half bath on this level with the washer and dryer. We noticed spider webs in some areas of the house and felt it could use a deep clean. There wasn't hand soap in any of the bathrooms, so you will want to purchase this before your stay. For us, it would have been better to find a home with more living space on the main floor as we had 3 couples staying there. Parking is also not great for more than 2 vehicles. There was also trash dumped down the side of the hill when we got there, which we reported...maybe from bears or racoons? It was still there at checkout. They also ask you to run the dishwasher and put all the dishes away, which I have never encountered before with a vrbo. Just adds a little time in the am to wait for the dishwasher to run its cycle before you can put the dishes away. The property management company was very friendly on arrival and even helped us print out our concert tickets, which was much appreciated. Overall, it wasn't awful but also not ideal.

Needs some love

The over all house was very nice and clean inside. But we we're not able to use any of the outside balconies because it has not been cleaned forever. It needs to be pressured washed. Very sad the ladies would not seat out side due to all of the spider webs. This was very disappointing.

Outstanding views, nice furnishings, etc. However, the management company did not process my rental timely, and had to place me in another location for the first day. While very apologetic, and handled things very well after hours, providing me a ticket for the Biltmore was not an equivalent cost/benefit. On the property itself, there were many burnt out or missing lightbulbs, a missing TV remote, and the microwave seemed to have a mind of its own. All of that was overcome by the specatcular views and privacy.

Ashville Area Visit

It was reasonably central to each of the venues we wanted to visit and had excellent views of the mountains. Most importantly, it was a last minute relocation due to utility problems resulting from bad weather. I received the call from Renda Barnes of Greybeard indicating the problems as I was boarding a flight NC. She assured me that by the time we arrived the problem would be resolved. The professionalism and confidence in her voice left me unconcerned. And as promised, our problem went away before we arrived. This might be the most important message I can offer - we could have had serious issues but Renda and the staff at Greybeard made the necessary decisions and placed us in an equal or better location with no muss of fuss on our part. And, Renda offered several ideas to expand our visit that were terrific.

The downstairs bedrooms were small and we wound up using the sitting area as a closet and place to unpack suitcases. I wonder if the owner would consider removing the rickety folding doors on the downstairs closet? The kitchen was a joy to cookie and we appreciated the nice quality dishes, pots and pans. etc. The sheets were lovely. It was nice having dish soap paper towel, etc so we didn't have to immediately dash to the store. Dinner at Que Sera in Black Mountain was especially good! Many thanks...a truly wonderful house.

wonderful mountain retreat!

Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: This lovely home is situated on the side of a mountain and it's entrance is on the top floor. There are two floors below this and my family of six enjoyed each one of them. We especially enjoyed the deck with its large table perfect for al fresco dining for up to eight people, a fully furnished chef's kitchen and amazing views. And now, some criticisms: The slow trickle of the refigerator filtered water outlet as well as broken ice maker were reported early in our week stay but were unable to be addressed by the management company due to the "age of the refrigerator." It pains me to tell that three of our teenage children caught lice during our stay, and we are convinced it originated in the bedding of one of the 2nd floor guest bedrooms -- probably from a prior guest. In fairness to Greybeard and the property owners, we realize it was beyond their control and do not fault them - this is mountain living, folks. I get it. In fact, we would stay here again and recommend it to others.

It was just a few minutes to Black Mountain and about 25 minutes to Asheville. I would definitely rent this home again. My only suggestion would be to have 3 king beds instead of 1. The queen beds seemed a little small. Other than that everything was perfect!
