About this property
Sequoia National Monument, Sierra Nevada.
THE SPACE
Sky Mountain is found at the end of a one lane road that meanders through the older original part of Pine Flat village. The last quarter mile is a dirt road that ends at the house. The house is secluded and private with no neighboring homes within sight.
The house is divided into two wings. Between the two wings there is an indoor spa/hot pool and a larger cool pool. The pools are not completely automated and require some manual operation. The south wing or main part of the house has a master bedroom and a guest room, each with an ensuite bathroom. The master bedroom has a king size bed. The guest room has a queen size bed. The north wing of the house has a room with accommodations for four consisting of two sets of bunk beds. Each bunk bed is a twin size bed. There is also a sofa with pull out double size hide-a-bed. It is not as comfortable as a standard double bed but does offer an extra sleeping accommodation if needed. There is an adjacent full bathroom and also a laundry room.
I list the house with overnight accommodations for 8. In a pinch it could accommodate a couple of extra guests. The pull out couch in the bunkbed room is a double so that room can accommodate 6. We ask that the total number or guests staying at the house be limited to 10.
The house is older but well built and well insulated. The south or main wing is heated and cooled via thermostatically controlled central heating and air conditioning. It also has an air tight wood stove. The wood stove in the main wing of the house has a catalytic converter and thermostatically controlled blower. There are do's and don'ts for proper stove operation. Please refer to the wood stove instructions in the house manual if you want to have a fire in it.
The bunkbed room (north wing) has a heat pump which will both heat and cool. The north wing also has a wall heater and a wood stove.
There is a VOIP telephone and internet service with Wi-Fi but no broadcast TV service or cell phone service. If you have WiFi enabled calling on your phone you can use your cell phone to make and receive calls if you are in or next to the house. A 4K flat panel TV is available if you want to stream movies via the internet. The TV has an Amazon Fire Stick for accessing Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and other content providers. The internet service is a highspeed Starlink satellite system installed in January, 2022. Data speeds are 100-200 Mbps with low latency and no data caps. (Versus 3-25 Mbps, high latency, and data caps with the old system.) The new system is good for streaming HD movies, video conferencing, and work from distance.
If you want to use the pools you must be willing to check the water level and add water if necessary, add chlorine if needed, and turn on the pump motors and pool heater. It is all done with valves and switches so it is not difficult but does require following the instructions and remembering to do certain things. I will send you detailed instructions and am happy to answer questions by phone if you need guidance.
Sky Mountain is located on the western slope of the southern Sierra Nevada Mountains at an elevation of 3,750 feet. It is within the boundaries of Giant Sequoia National Monument. To the west and about 10 minutes away is the resort of California Hot Springs. A couple miles to the east by way the crow flies is the southernmost grove of Giant Sequoia redwood trees. About 30 minutes to the northeast is the Trail of 100 Giants and more giant redwood groves. Farther to the north are Mineral King, Sequoia National Park, and Kings Canyon National Park.
GUEST ACCESS
The house is self check-in. There is a combination lock on the gate and a key pad entry on the front door. I will provide the codes for both after you have completed your reservation.
With the exception of the shop building and an owners storage closet in the pool equipment room you have entire use of the house and property. There is a second refrigerator in the garage that you can plug in if you have extra items you need to keep cold. Use of the two 4 wheel drive vehicles in the garage is not included.
If you have a horse or ATV or just hiking shoes you are welcome to roam around and explore the property. If hiking it is best to have boots or high top shoes when walking through the grass in summer and fall. The grass has little burrs that love to get stuck in you socks and are difficult to remove.
OTHER THINGS TO NOTE
Not to alarm but you should be aware, it is a country house and mother nature’s little critters sometimes appear. Various bugs and lizards are not uncommon. We have not had any mice in years but I do keep a few mouse traps in the house in case one should get in. Ant spray is kept under the kitchen sink. I have not seen a rattle snake in over 3 years but they are a possibility in the summer and fall when the weather is warm.
Please make a habit of closing the door when you enter and exit the house. It is a lot easier to keep little critters out as opposed to catching them once they get in.
Food or garbage must not be left out. especially overnight as animals and insects mistakenly think dinner has been provided for their benefit. Bagged garbage can be stored in the garage when the kitchen garbage can becomes full. There is no community garbage pick up service. I have been able to hire a local person to remove garbage after your departure.
There are black bears and mountain lions in the surrounding mountains. A sighting happens occasionally but it is very rare for either animal to venture near Pine Flat. You may see deer. Just after sunrise and before sunset they will meander through the meadow to get a drink of water from Capinero Creek.
Hunting is not allowed. While the area around the house is private and no other neighbors can be seen we do have neighbors through the trees on the other side of Capinero Creek. As a courtesy to the neighbors we request that guests refrain from shooting guns.
Note: The area is a wildfire high risk area. If you are staying at the house during fire season (summer and fall) campfires are not allowed.

Matt was a great guest. It was a pleasure hosting him and his family at our mountain. We would love to have him visit again. I would recommend him to anyone considering him as a VRBO guest.
Wonderful! Thank you for being a great guest Sowdamini. We would love to have you visit Sky Mountain again. We completed installation of central air conditioning. If you come next time during a warm spell it will more comfortable.
Property is an amazing place. Very vintage. Really unique with the indoor pool and hot tub. Due to technical difficulties and a health issue, we had to cut our stay short. The owner was very helpful about the situation. Be prepared for a very windy road to get to the property.
Great family spot, plenty of room for all guests, lots of privacy, nice outside space. Hiking, wildlife and wading spots. A good book on the cool mornings
Beautiful house with great views. The host is super responsive and very attentive. We enjoyed all amenities the property has to offer from the pool, jacuzzi, and fire fit. We will definitely return!

Great guest. Kristina left our mountain home in excellent condition upon departure. She communicated well and followed all the house rules. The house keeper fills out a form about the condition of the property after check out. She rated Kristina higher than the previous 70 guests! I give Kristina a five star plus rating!
Pete was great at letting us know all the ins and outs of the property beforehand. My boys (3 & 5) had a blast exploring and hiking the property! The house was a great size for the four of us. Will definitely book again. Thank you!

Dulcemonica and her family were excellent guests. It was delight hosting them at our Sierra Nevada mountain retreat. I would love to have them visit again.
Our family with (grown) kids and dog stayed hoping for snow. Even though it never came, we had a couple nice hikes and really enjoyed the hot tub. Great detailed instructions as well for how to use everything in the house and Info bout the area.

This place was so amazing!! The property comes stocked with whatever you need plus more. Very clean and impressive layout. The scene was just blissful, able to absorb nature and convenience in one locale. Extremely spacious and amazing acres of land that provide amazing scenic views and that real rustic outdoor adventure. Sequoia very close by, neighborhood market and grill, giants trees near by and hot springs as well! Definitely would come back anytime; it's a must stay!!

Thank you for the kind words and thank you for being a great guest Bharat. We would love to have you visit Sky Mountain again.
We enjoyed the privacy and the soaking pools. One little hiccup was the ants but there was raid in the house which took care of them quickly. Outdoor furniture and AC would be a plus as well. I do believe the AC unit is coming in the next few weeks which will be wonderful. The wait lace was very clean. We also loved the games that were available. Thanks Pete for a great stay.

Thank you for being a great guest DeAnna. It was a pleasure hosting you and your family at our mountain retreat in Sequoia National Monument. The HVAC contractor is coming out next week to complete installation of the air conditioning. After 40 years Sky Mountain will have AC. Yeah! I have had other guests suggest outdoor chairs and table. I purchased patio chairs and plan to bring them up next week. I am looking for a picnic table also. Sorry about the ants but glad you found the ant spray. I appreciate the feedback and hope you will visit Sky Mountain again.
Property was great. Plenty of information throughout the house identifying what was what and how to do various things around the house. If i had to complain about something would be that some newer mattresses in the main house would be ideal. I might just be getting old though lol. Pete was super helpful accommodating us staying an extra day. 10/10 nice guy

Graham was a great guest. It was a pleasure hosting him and his travel companions. They left the house in tip top shape upon departure. We would love to have Graham visit Sky Mountain Ranch again.
A wonderfully large property with all of the things that you need! The house was perfect! Not modernized, but with modern amenities, such as a nest thermostat and an TV with Netflix, Prime, etc. I cooked every day in the kitchen and everything I needed was there. The little pool house was so fun for our family! Wish we had another family so we could have used the other side of the house.. its a perfect kid space with bunk beds! We saw deer each morning at dawn. Our dogs ran for miles and miles up and down the hills exploring the terrain. It was such a welcome break from the city. 35 mins from Trail of 100 Giants, which was one of those life changing experiences, and such a treat for our son. Nature at it’s finest. Will definitely stay here again! Maybe in the winter! Oh, 30 miles to the nearest gas station and an hour for medical attention, so be prepared when you travel.

Thank you for the wonderful review and thank you for being wonderful guests Erica. It makes me happy to hear when guests enjoyed our mountain retreat. We look forward to your return visit when the fire season has passed, the weather is cooler, and you can enjoy a campfire at the end of day. Perhaps you'll get lucky and enjoy a snow fall too. Until then, happy trails!
We had the best time here- such a beautiful drive through the mountains with oak trees, pines, and the fresh air was amazing. We had all that we needed- pool and hot tub, all the kitchen tools for making amazing food, and a spring campfire. It was peaceful and quiet, and there was plenty of quiet space. We gazed at the stars and listened to hooting owls and frogs while making Smores. It was really magical. Thank you Pete and family for sharing your mountain home with us!
This was our second visit to Pine Flats. The house and grounds are absolutely beautiful. Pete was, as before, a very gracious host. We were lucky to get some gorgeous snow and had a ball making snowmen!
The house and kitchen were extremely well equipped and there is plenty of firewood provided for the wood burning stove. It made the house very cozy and special.

Thank you for being a great guest Alia. I am glad mother nature cooperated and gave you a winter wonderland during your stay. We hope you will visit again!
We had a fabulous experience taking our three children on their very first snow trip!!! It was fabulous to come inside after playing in the snow and enjoy the jacuzzi and heated pool!!!! Only compliant was the cleanliness. I was informed that the housekeepers husband had surgery so there was someone filling in for her and I was given a $100 discount for the inconvenience!!!! Overall we enjoyed every moment!!! We even had a pet lizard we named Gator!!! He was very calm and relaxed on my shoulder as well as nested in my hair!!! The kids got a real kick out of it!!!! They didn’t want to leave the little guy behind😢 we will definitely return and hopefully the kids can see Gator!! Thanks Pete for sharing your property and for the detailed explanations and house manual!!!!

Thank you for being a great guest. It was a pleasure hosting you and your family at our mountain home. I am glad you were able to get some snow play with your children. My apology about the house not being properly prepared for your arrival. It is the first time in 4 years that it has happened. I spoke with the housekeeper. She was sorry that she did not adequately go over what needed to be done with the person that filled in for her and asked me to offer to you her apology as well. She promised it would not happen again. We would love to have you visit again and hope you will do so!
All excellent, location, property itself inside and around.
One issue, Wi-Fi very weak almost doesn’t exist, TV would be nice, will definitely stay again

Thank you for being a great guest Mikhail. We love returning guests. I hope you will visit our mountain home again. Good news on the internet service. We are soon to have much higher speed internet. After being on the Starlink waiting list for 10 months I received the new system last week. As soon as I find a break in the guest calendar and weather, I plan to install the new system. Download speeds will increase from 3-25 Mbps to 100-200 Mbps.
