Great weekend stay at this beautiful mountain vacation cabin/home.The views from the cabin are awesome! Our host was very accommodating and easily accessible to answer any questions we had. We would definitely stay there again!
Overall, my family and I loved the house! Plenty of space for us 5 adults. Super clean and stocked with basic necessities. The kitchen had everything we needed to cook. Mrs. Pam makes it very clear that you NEED four wheel drive to make it to the house! Do not underestimate the driveway! The only issues we had were we weren’t aware of the gate at the beginning of the driveway and it is extremely tight if you are driving a dually, and the road getting to the house had a pretty rough washout (no fault of the homeowners, I know their was nothing they could do about that.) Mrs. Pam was extremely nice and responded very quickly to any questions. We enjoyed it so much, we decided to stay an extra night!
Great cabin for a family, wonderful views, clean and well stocked essentials, quiet area , close to nearby parks and outdoor activities .Towns are a short drive away .
The cabin was beautiful and stocked very well. The view from the deck is spectacular. It’s a very nice place to relax and unwind. Yes you need a 4wd to get up to the house but once you are there it is peaceful and a place worth staying. We enjoyed our stay!
Absolutely breathtaking views!! Worth making it up the four-wheel drive/AWD driveway. Kitchen well stocked and house very clean. Wonderful weekend getaway spot!
Great peaceful location. Very private! You will definitely need a 4 wheel drive vehicle to access this property! Views are great! We loved the home and the property! We will definitely return here.
We planned a mountain trip with our grandparents, my grandfather is from the blue ridge Parkway and because of health issues this is the 1st time in 6 years . It was beautiful and we loved the experience!! Thanks again:)
Other than not realizing too many steps up to cabin and path was a little rough in places it was absolutely beautiful!!! Very clean but the wifi was not so great! Its true you should absolutely have a 4wd or awd getting up that path 😆 my mdx worked like a charm! Loved our stay!
The view was fantastic! The sun rise was amazing! The cabin was very comfortable, clean, neat and quiet. Although there are other cabins close, it was quite private. The only negative is that the pictures show a hot tub on the porch but it looked as though it was not operable for quite a long time. A 4WD vehicle is advisable to climb the last driveway into the cabin location especially if it had rained several days prior to arrival.

Had a wonderful stay at this cabin
The location was a little difficult to find, even with owner's instructions, as GPS took us to the wrong side of the hill on an unconnected road. Would definitely recommend heeding the advice to arrive before sundown (and not mid-night). Once we located the house it was relatively easy to find our way back each time.
The cabin was very comfortable and had all the amenities one could need. Everything was well taken care of and directions carefully laid out.
The view was very pretty when the sun would come out and we were able to enjoy the weather.

We are so pleased it met your needs. Thank you for the wonderful comments. We hate that GPS directions are not accurate. That is why we provided copies of photos with landmarks. We want you to have an amazing experience from beginning to end. Thanks for sharing. Please come again.
The house is gorgeous! We loved that part. However, there were several issues that we had. The owner was very nice when we contacted her for a stopped up tub. I am not sure the owner knows of the problems. But, quite a few things were misrepresented in the description but we thoroughly enjoyed our stay despite the issues.

Black Bear Retreat
Beautiful property. Definitely recommend 4-wheel drive. Beautiful, comfortable interiors. Incredible view. Several wineries/cideries/meaderies in the area. Right off the BRP. Hot tub you can park a canoe in.
Stayed just after the remains of Hurricane Michael blew through. The storm knocked the well pump out. Manager was very quick to get the issue resolved promptly. Water was flowing within 2 hours of notification.
Great property and great management.

We are so glad you enjoyed the cabin. You took great care of it. We couldn't even tell you were there.
Warmest Regards,
How glorious a greeting the sun gives on the mountain
This is our second stay at the cabin. We have family in the area and this is our go-to vacation house. The views are just wonderful. Even family that came to visit said “Y’all have quite a view.” The house has all you need for a comfortable stay. Clean and welcoming. Our host was very responsive if we had questions.
We saw deer 🦌, turkeys 🦃, and baby skunks with Mamma. When we visit we take advantage of the mill's wonderful simple fixings. We also had fun fishing and visiting wineries close by.
Again, as many have mentioned, the driveway is straight up a mountain ⛰️. Awd or 4x4 recommend.
We have a Sienna AWD and it didn't have a problem.
Thanks again Pam for a great stay!
Just exactly what we needed. A weekend away from it all with espectacular views.
Cabin is as described. A bumpy road up to the house, but no major issues as long as you ha a four wheel drive vehicle.
Our stay was lovely, it was really cold and given that there is not much to do., having a working hot tub would have been great. The owners did let us know it wasn’t working.
They may want to replace the hot tub for an outdoor dining set, but that is a minor issue.
If you are looking for a quiet place to rest and recharge. This is it !
We would love to come back. !
My wife and I booked this location before the COVID-19 lockdowns began, and we decided to proceed with our long weekend away given it was just going to be the two of us - not really a gathering. The property owner was responsive when we reached out to confirm availability, sanitization, etc.
While we did not actually have to engage the 4WD mode on our vehicle, the requirements are no joke. The driveway is very steep and vehicles with low clearance will not make it. The owner reached out to clarify this ahead of time, which I appreciated.
The cabin is nicely equipped. I found the kitchen to be much better stocked than some others I've stayed in. Good collection of dishes, pans, bowls, and utensils.
The view off the back porch is absolutely stunning. My wife is a photographer and she spent much of the weekend making time lapse shots of the valley. We both spent a lot of time just sitting out there and looking out over the landscape. Also a source of photo fun, the hummingbird feeder was visited throughout the day.
The furniture was comfortable and clean. Internet and TV service were functional. Kitchen appliances functioned - didn't try the washer or dryer.
We really enjoyed our stay and are planning to go again ourselves, or as a group once group gatherings are somewhat safe again.
The following issues aren't great enough to affect my rating but mentioning them for the benefit of the owner and others -
- The gate is a bit of a pain and difficult to close without a 2nd set of hands. Both sides want to fall open away from you, which can make getting the lock around both gate sides and lining up the lock's posts tricky.
- Hot tub - hoping this is either going to get fixed or they get rid of it. It's a lot of space taken up on the back porch for something you can't use.
- Scents - you may have trouble if you are sensitive to fragrances or have allergies. The cabin had a strong air freshener odor when we arrived. We unplugged some of the outlet-mounted scent dispensers during our stay to reduce the impact on my wife's allergies.
- Might be a factor of there being a long gap between us and the previous renters, but the tap water was somewhat bitter when we first arrived. The owner keeps the water off between rentals (their check-in/out instructions have you turn the water on/off) and the long occupancy gap may have meant more residue that needed to be flushed from the pipes. This resolved after running the taps for several minutes.

We are so glad you enjoyed your stay. We will certainly address the items you noted. Warmest Regards,
This property is in a great location for access to the Blue Ridge Parkway. You must follow the WAZE app to find the property as google maps is incorrect. The driveway is very steep, so a 4WD is essential, especially if there is rain, snow or ice. We were a family of 6 adults and the bedrooms were spacious and we each had a bathroom. There is a large porch on 2 sides of the property with views as far of Pilot Mountain and Winston on a clear day. Very sturdy furniture on the porch for relaxing with a coffee and doing some birdwatching. TV and Wi-Fi worked well so we enjoyed some World Cup Soccer games during our stay. It was very cozy and clean with a fairly well equipped kitchen for preparing meals. Despite a couple of maintenance issues, this is a pleasant house with room for larger groups and we recommend anyone to visit.
We really enjoyed staying here. The view from the cabin was amazing. The cabin was very spacious. The kitchen had everything we needed to cook Thanksgiving dinner. We wanted to stay here longer.
This property was just amazing. Yes we had a 4 wheel drive and did have to use it to get there. Our family had to park away from the house but it was all good. We put them in our truck and climbed that hill to the top. Thanks for the family memories we made this weekend. ❤️
We booked this property for my sons graduation from Virginia Tech even though it was an hour away from campus. We were so glad we did! The cabin was beautiful inside and had a spectacular view from top of the mountain. The property was clean and well stocked. The breakdown of bedrooms and baths worked perfectly for our family dynamic in attendance. I have to say the mattresses on the beds were the most comfortable we have experienced in any properties of places we have stayed over the last 4 years between home and Blacksburg. The owners were very helpful in answering any questions I had (and there were alot) leading up to our stay. I will say their recommendation for a 4 wheel drive vehicle is spot on . We had a pretty substantial amount of rain on Thursday and Friday so the 4 wheel drive came in handy.
Can't wait to stay here again the next time our travels allow.

Thanks so much Kelley. We are so delighted you had a great stay. We enjoyed having you as our guests. You are welcome anytime.
The cabin was as advertised and a perfect getaway. Great views, good location and well kept, the cabin was perfect. We'll definitely be looking into future rentals here.
My only regret was not planning a longer stay! Cabin was immaculately clean. Views were breathtaking (when the fog lifted). Quiet, remote neighborhood (plan meals carefully-there's no real "quick dash" to a supermarket). They're not kidding about using Waze to navigate there or needing 4-wheel or all-wheel drive to make it up the driveway (I recommend planning arrival for daytime so you can watch out for ruts and gulley-washes!..for the record, I made it up in my AWD CRV in L1 gear). Beds were exceedlingly comfortable (better than a high end hotel--seriously). Kitchen had everything and then some for food preparation (you might want to bring sharp knives, though). Internet was plenty fast when needed. Plan on about 25-45 minute drive to attractions. Owner very friendly. I highly recommend Black Bear Retreat! One more tip: wave your hand over the front door lock to make the numbers light up so you can enter the code, as it's motion activated.
One thing I want to say is Thank you so much Mrs. Robinson. Your place was so amazing my wife cried when she walked through the door. We was there celebrating our 3rd year anniversary and it was a surprise for her. She always been asking to stay inside a cabin, but this cabin was one of a kind with the amazingly beautiful view every morning waking up to. She enjoyed her cups of coffee every morning and night on the wrap around balcony. The sunsets and sunrise was beautiful to see every morning and evening. The inside of the house was just mouth dropping with the hard wood floors and sitting area in front of the fireplace. This place was equipped with multiple selection of games that kept us occupied during down time. There's so much more awesome qualities about this place I will be writing forever about how much I enjoyed/loved this place. There is one last thing I want to mention is the adventure in getting up to the cabin. The hill during day and night was a journey its self that made us laugh at the end and saying to one another that we finally made it to the TOP.

This property certainly has amazing views. But the driveway (they plainly state 4 wheel or all wheel drive is necessary) is a bit hard on the faint of heart! The WiFi is good and the cabin is very pretty and well appointed!
Although we were visiting for a sad event (burial of my father in law- Morris Cemetery), we enjoyed our stay very much!
Everything was perfect! The views are better than any picture could capture. Kitchen amenities fit our needs and the check in/out process was smooth.
Looking for a week in October 2022 that will work for everyone and we will be back for a longer stay.

About the host
Hosted by Pamela Robinson
We are busy professionals who live only an hour away. We work a lot. We never seem to stop. The only time we don't work is when we get away. We have always rented cabins in various places. Our friends own a cabin in Galax that we frequented often. Finally we decided to purchase and allow other to experience the peace of getting away from it all. We hope you enjoy our cabin as much as we do. It is truly a special place.
Why they chose this property
We fell in love with this property because it is totally private when trees are in bloom. Once we enter the gate, it feels as though we are in another world. The views are amazing from inside and out. We live in a neighborhood with rows of houses and wanted this to be a place of refuge. There are 4 acres of woods for us to play in. We love sitting by the stream and talking about our future plans. The woods are full of wild flowers, beautiful ferns, and rhododendrons. Every time we arrive, we are greeted by dozens of beautiful deer. In Winston-Salem the summers are extremely hot and humid. In Virginia, the temperature is normally 10 degrees lower. On our mountain top, there seems to always be a cool breeze with less humidity. We love sitting inside on the sofa looking at views of Pilot Mountain or pulling out our telescope to find the Winston-Salem skyline. There are amazing mountain views all around us. In the winter you can even see Buffalo Mountain. In the mornings, we enjoy walking out on the deck with the warmth of the sun on our face and views of the lower gap/valleys below. Even when it's 30 degrees outside, the sun keeps us warm without a coat. The nights are chilly and perfect for sitting by the firepit making smores. Imagine looking down on other cities and seeing nothing but lights. I always feel the presence of God there and marvel at his creation.
What makes this property unique
Located in The Blue Ridge Parkway. Totally private in season. Gated Entrance. Bedroom on the main. Open floor plan. Views of mountains and valleys from the front porch year round. Convenient location only 55 minutes from Winston-Salem
